Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound ).

Come The Day
Come the day I take that final bend,
Can I count on you to be my friend?
To see I?m treated just and fair,
It means so much to know you care.

For, what the future holds in store,
Now that I can race no more,
Should be addressed for every hound,
Who parts the punter from his pound.

Tell them I don?t ask for much,
A kindly word, a gentle touch,
Somewhere warm to lay my head,
A meal each day to keep me fed,
Not just life- but quality,
This is how it ought to be.

Do not see me swept away,
I long to live another day,
With peace of mind, tranquillity,
And those who care surrounding me,
So tell them all- you have that choice,
I beg of you to be my voice.

Too Old - he is top of the list for you because the rescue is trying its hardest to match your specific needs with the best fitting dog. Honestly, his size is the least important feature and if he is a big male, he won't be vastly bigger than most of the females. To give you an idea our big black male takes a 30" coat size but the two girls take a 28" so have long backs but just have slightly lighter, finer boned frames. Picture two adults - both 5'6" for instance, but one male, one female - the male will have "heavier", bigger bones than the female. It's similar with greys.

Finding a dog that is good with children AND smalls and non furries and good for a novice home is quite a package - and you are incredibly fortunate to be offered this so quickly.

What is it about larger greys taht your husband doesn't like/want? In practice, all our four eat exactly the same size meals, the coats and collars cost exactly the same, the insurance is the same, most vets bills are similar, kennel costs are the same on holiday. When he was our only dog he fitted nicely into a Ford Fiesta.

To be perfectly honest, if this is really a deal breaker for him, it's probably best you reconsider a greyhound as many/most of them are quite big - there's no getting around that. It's perfectly OK and reasonable for you as a potential adopter to meet him and decide he's not the dog for you, but the rescue will, understandably, be less inclined to take you seriously as adopters if size is a real problem for you. Sorry if this sounds negative, but it's such a basic point.

Scuttlebutter · 03/10/2013 22:13

His picture is stunning. Do you know what his racing name was?

cinnamongreyhound · 03/10/2013 22:26

I think your heart should be very much in your decision!

If he's top of the list for you as a family then that's great Grin

TooOldForGlitter · 03/10/2013 22:29

In all honesty I think he has forgotton how to have a dog. He and our last had a real bond and when he died he was really quite lost for a good while. Our personal circumstances were different then too so I know he is fretting about damage/accidents in a rented home.

Its been near three years since we lost our Scamp and i think that the idea of this big unfamiliar breed in our small house has thrown him. Thing is, I know he will be head over heels after a fortnight. Just have to get him there first.

TooOldForGlitter · 03/10/2013 22:30

I don't know his racing name yet. Will ask on Sat.

TooOldForGlitter · 03/10/2013 22:35

For me; im smitten, im having him, but I want captain scaredypants on board from the off.

PeanutPatty · 03/10/2013 22:52

Hopefully meeting him on Saturday with your DH will remind him how awesome it is to be around dogs. Hopefully the dog will give him a big toothy grin and they will fall head over heels.

I don't know very much about pointier, apart from what I've learnt here, and it really really does sounds like this dog ticks all the boxes. I know when we start looking we will have all the tough criteria that most rescue dogs won't suit eg young children (under 3), an elderly cat etc. I still say don't be pressured though. Can you arrange a short term foster or a trial weekend or something?

TooOldForGlitter · 03/10/2013 23:06

Hi peanutpatty

Having spoken to the fosterer I feel under far less pressure. In my heart i am fairly happy he is 'the one'.

TooOldForGlitter · 03/10/2013 23:07

What are you looking for when you start the search, particular breed or just the 'right dog'?

YourHandInMyHand · 04/10/2013 10:46

TooOldForGlitter I live in a small 2 up 2 down type house and I don't even know I have my GH. She is such a snoozer she doesn't need room indoors to run around, but loves to do some zooming in the garden or on walks. She spends all her time curled up asleep, or stood still looking at you with those gorgeous eyes.

Hopefully when you go meet him your DH will fall for him, they are ever so good at looking sad and adorable. Grin

I would much rather have a big mellow dog than a small bouncy one!

YourHandInMyHand · 04/10/2013 10:48

Just looked at his pic, he looks lovely!

I prefer black dogs but ended up with a gorgeous fawn one as she ticked the boxes I needed (cat friendly, kid friendly) and that was more important. I have to say though I do have a soft spot for the black ones. Smile

mistlethrush · 04/10/2013 13:11

My great aunt (actually probably my mother's second cousin or something that vague) raced greyhounds (I think she was the first female greyhound trainer?) (but she found homes for her retired hounds). The time we visited her she lived in a one up, one down. They still had their last greyhound living with them...

cinnamongreyhound · 04/10/2013 14:16

Feeling less guilty about Peanut's bed now, he only his his hips and back legs on it and the rest of him is one the floor!

mistlethrush · 04/10/2013 14:24

Mine manages to do that on both sides with a bit propped up in the middle on the bed. Grin

YourHandInMyHand · 04/10/2013 14:24

I have added a pic of ShyDog to my profile, she's modelling her lovely new Milgi housecoat. Grin

mistlethrush · 04/10/2013 14:26

Very fetching!

TooOldForGlitter · 04/10/2013 14:31

ShyDog is beautiful! The coat is also lovely. Will the other dogs pick on 'my' dog if I put him in a pink coat with hearts on? Grin

YourHandInMyHand · 04/10/2013 14:33

Depends how stylish he is TooOld, most greyhounds can pull off any sort of ensemble with a haughty pose I have found. Grin

It's ever so lovely and soft and bright. Am quite fussy with it! I was tempted by the santa house coat but just couldn't justify it. Have decided I might get her a festive collar instead.....

moosemama · 04/10/2013 14:39

She looks beautiful YourHand. Smile

TooOld, I keep finding I'm attracted to the pinks when looking at coats etc. Dh was cross enough when I bought Pip a purple collar though - I dread to think what he'd say if I bought him a heart laden pink and white coat! I'm tempted to do it just to see his face! Grin

My two have enormous rigid plastic beds with memory foam mattresses, vet bedding and a blanket in the kitchen and a makeshift bed made of old pillows wrapped two blankets and some vet bedding in the living room. Pip also has a high sided sherpa lined puppy bed in his crate, along with no fewer than three additional blankets. Blush

Lurcherboy curls up really tiny in all the beds but likes to lie stretched out upside down in front of the sofa too. Pip seems to favour body in the bed, head flopped out the side at an angle that looks distinctly like he has a broken neck! Confused

You can always tell how cold it is outside by how tightly Lurcherboy curls up. When it's really cold he hides his head under his tail to complete the circle! Grin

TooOldForGlitter · 04/10/2013 15:00

Oh she must have a festive collar YourHand, it would be rude not to!

I'm just thinking how lovely bright pink will look against his shiny black coat Grin.

Just peeked at your pics moosemama and they are both just absolutely gorgeous.

Scuttlebutter · 04/10/2013 17:40

Oh dear, Moose, we are doing a gorgeous pink fleece coat for Christmas, with cavorting polar bears, and festive trees and snowflakes. You might have to have a look Wink

Your Hand -you might like our new range of Christmas bandanas!! An excellent choice of coat though Grin

TooOldForGlitter · 04/10/2013 17:46

Scuttle do you have a website? I love bandanas on dogs Grin

YourHandInMyHand · 04/10/2013 18:16

Scuttle I've emailed the pic to you too for your rogues gallery :-D.

Bandanas you say....

On the topic of beds, ShyDog has a princess and the pea style mound of blankets in my bedroom, a duvet topped with a blanket in her crate, but her favourite spot to sleep in is at the top of the stairs, upside down! Hmm Grin

PeanutPatty · 04/10/2013 18:33

TooOld I'm so glad the pressure is off. Great news. We already have a dog. Not a hound. She's 6.5 and soppy as. I'm keen to get her a
Companion before she gets too much older. Whippets have really caught my eye as have all pointies really. Going to be like finding a needle in a haystack when the time comes I think.

moosemama · 04/10/2013 18:58

Thank you TooOld - I think so, but may be a teensy bit biased! Grin

Ooo Scuttle, that is sooo tempting - it sounds fab! Grin

Tempted by a couple of festive bandanas as well - we couldn't do collars in the past because Oldgirl used to chew them off all the other dogs. Hmm

I had an epic puppy parenting fail this afternoon. Somehow forgot to let him out before the school run then couldn't understand why he started yelling 20 minutes after I left and wouldn't shut up when I got back. I hung around in the living room waiting for him to quieten down before I went in and the poor thing was just trying to tell me he was desperate. I only realised when I went to get his kongs out of his crate. Sad
