My very small pup was chased by 2 large dogs yesterday. She was terrified and screaming. She managed to come back to me, and I immediately picked her up. One of the dogs lunged and bit her, luckily just pulling out a lump of fur rather than breaking her skin. I think the large dogs were initially playing, but, then got into chase mode. I think little pup was just overwhelmed. She's 4 1/2 months but I've only had her 3 weeks, she seems quite a happy confident pup and gets on well with my other dog (who was busy hiding behind a bush while this took place)I suppose my questions are, was I correct in picking her up or did that encourage the bite? And how should I have handled it?
Thanks

In a moment like that it is very difficult to remember all the right things to do. When he was 15 weeks old my mobile mop was on the lead and nearly killed by another dog. I have often thought if I'd picked him up would it have been different, then I think goodness the dog could have injured me if I had done that.
What I do know is that what you do next is very, very important. Are you going to training classes, if you are does your trainer have one adult safe dogs to socialise your pup with? Getting your pup socialised with a big variety of safe adult dogs really quickly is essential to helping it to grow up into a lovely social adult.
I spent a lot of time socialising mobile mop with a huge number of dogs in the month immediately after the attack. He is. Lovely friendly dog, though will always let other dogs be the boss.

Hi Lone cat, thanks for your reply. Sorry to hear of your experience, I was upset yesterday so can't imagine how awful that must have been for you.
With regard to training class, yes this is something I am looking at. I've only had her 3 weeks and wanted to give her time to settle with my other dog and pets. Socially she does meet lots of dogs on her daily walks, and we also have friends with dogs visiting, I will up the ante though.
You're right, I didn't have time to think I just grabbed her up, it was only after, I wondered if I'd have been better crouching, covering her and shouting away to the other dogs or something?
Glad to hear your Mobile Mop is doing well, thanks again.
