I have a 20 week old Weimaraner. She is a timid thing, barking at anything and everything that scares her.
On the odd occasion, last night being one of them, she will bark endlessly.
Usually, she sleeps in her cage, with the door open, but a baby gate on the door shut. Our older dog is in the room with her. We have got to the point where most nights she sleeps through now, with an occasional bark in the night to go outside and toilet.
Last night, 2am the barking started. DH took her outside, she went and then back in her cage, he came back up to bed.
A 20ish minutes later she started up again. We gave it a few minutes in case she settled and then I went down and took her outside again. She toileted again, back in her cage, and back to bed.
This pattern went on over the next hour, but then she didn't want to wee anymore and just watched the garden anxiously. When I would go down, rather than being at the gate which is where she usually is, she was just sat in the middle of the room barking.
Because she was unsettled, I just lay on the sofa to give her security. I didn't really interact with her, but just gave my presence. She would still, periodically go though a stint of barking. I would shush her, and just tell her it was ok and she would settle down again. I spent the rest of the night on the sofa.
Our older dog was not fussed in the slightest, so I am sure there was nothing there as he is quite on the ball. I didn't hear or see anything either that could have caused her to be nervy.
I don't know if I did the right thing?
DH thinks that I should have just ignored her and left her to bark it out, but so far, she barks when she needs toileting and I want to keep that, rather than risk accidents when housetraining went so well.
Also I don't want the neighbours to hate us!
