Dominance theory alive and kicking (or biting)

I met a man today who said he'd trained dogs all his life and currently had bull mastiffs. I was talking about the challenges with my 14 week puppy and his advice was to bite the dogs ear until it bled if it bit you, and smack and rub its nose in any inside accidents. Apparently this is the 'shepherds way' though I don't think I will be adopting it!

He said his were really well behaved and putting dogs in their place was the only way. To be honest this seems to be the norm amongst dog owners I have spoken to over the last few months.
