If you have dogs that live outside, how do you keep the 'doggy' smell to a minimum?

We have three dogs, and our house smells just doggy. Usually I do not mind, but we recently had guests and they were a bit disparaging, and soon I have my aunt coming and she is a bit precious about a lot of things and so I have started to notice and become a bit paranoid myself.

Currently, I wash one dog bed a day, which means that every bed is washed twice a week. The dogs get shampooed once a month (by me), and we get the carpets cleaned once a year, although we cannot afford to this year.

Grateful for further tips. DH has a passionate hate against air fresheners, so I have never tried febreeze or anything like that.

What are they fed on and what breed?

mixed breeds, all, and they are fed on a mixture of dog kibble and a gravy we make up with liver or another meat and cereals.
