Dogs got the runs, do I feed him or not?

Dog had the shits last night twice and 4x today. He seems happy and perky in himself.

Dh hasn't fed him today as he says he'll just shit everywhere again and ne needs to have an empty tummy for 24 hours. Is dh right? I feel sorry for poor dog not having dinner, he's by his bowl looking hopeful.

I wouldn't feed him. when we have upset tummies we don't eat to help clear it up so I would do the same for the dog. if it doesn't improve in a couple of days or gets bloody take him to the vets.

LEMisdisappointed · 13/08/2013 17:42

just give him a small meal of chicken and rice

OnaPromise · 13/08/2013 17:47

When mine is like this I give him rice or something very bland until it passes.

VivaLeBeaver · 13/08/2013 17:49

Thanks. I've just fried some chicken for dinner. Would fried chicken be ok?

My dog has a very delicate tummy. The vet said to stop food for 24 hours at the first sign of trouble. I definitely wouldn't give anything fried to a dog (or human) with the runs. It doesn't hurt them to have a day without food, it's what I do myself if I have an upset stomach.

Ok, I'll leave it till tomorrow then and try him on some unfried chicken then. Thanks.

He's vomited a couple of times just now.

It's not going to be Parvovirus is it? He's vaccinated.

Vets in the morning I reckon if he's not better.

The latest thinking is that the fastest way to a normal gut is to put normal food in. So most vets now recommend feeding through diarrhoea.

My own dog I just keep giving his regular food.

Regarding diarrhoea tonight - the bad stuff has to come out be it tonight or tomorrow.

VivaLeBeaver · 15/08/2013 17:39

Well he's better.

Now I just need to work out how to get poo stains out of light carpets.

Sparkling water is very good then blotting repeatably with loo roll.

VivaLeBeaver · 15/08/2013 18:31

Thanks, will try that.
