Got our new puppy on Saturday. I was in tears this morning and I'm a pretty experienced dog owner. Its just so hard moaning cow that I am He is a 9 week old cocker and is a beautiful, cuddly boy but is a massive shitting machine. And not in the garden either.

So any new puppy owners want to weep in here then please do.

Awks - Jarvis, Cocker Spaniel, 9 weeks and 11 Aug 2013
Everlong - Enzo, Italian Spinone, 9 weeks, brought home 9/8/13
Moosemama - Pip, Rescue Lurcher 10 weeks, 9/10 August 2013
TooManyButtons - Stanley, Cocker Spaniel, 8 weeks, 15 August 2013
MissMummy1 - Aulay, Spanador, 8 weeks, coming home 20th August 2013!

I have just ordered his puppy collar and lead and treating myself to a wee trip to PAH later!

What food are you all on? Aulay dog's breeder is feeding them Purina Beta puppy dry mix. A vet friend recommends Wagg (amazingly) when they're older so not sure whether or not to wean him onto wagg puppy or stick with the purina beta for the meantime?

Oh hello! Can I join too? We have Ushi the sprocker, brought home 2 August when she was 9 weeks. I am finding it very hard work, I have only had adult rescues before, this is all new to me! Never again I have to say, cute though she is!

We are feeding the Purina which came with her from the breeder, but we are going to change to Eden multi-meat and fish. It seems like it has decent ingredients.

Toby is coming home next week, and right now its probably the best incentive for my daughter as she's in GOSH having surgery on her jaw right now. We are all looking forward to his arrival.

I am still undecided by a crate (borrowing one), but we have a hard plastic bed, lots of baby sheets to put in it until he's stopped wrecking it. Also borrowing a puppy pen to put him in. I've looked at a puppy socialisation class and I will be taking him to that in September once he's had all his jabs.

The breeder has him on Burns Puppy, and I will keep him on that until I decide whether to swap him over to the Eden feed as it looks very good. Heard though (through another thread)that the amounts are smaller as its protein based and poor are loose. Not going to be tire down the BARF route. I have four kids who are all individually demanding, so Toby-Obi-Wan-Kenobi will have to adjust to us as we will have to adjust to him. :)

You guys are bringing back memories, our Springer is nearly 10 months. It gets loads easier promise, but I am not at the stage yet where the memories are so distant that I want to do it again Smile

My first dog was a pup then we had another spaniel who came to us at 13 months. I'd actually forgotten how hard a puppy is. Just like a baby - your heart is in your mouth every minute of the day and I simply can't relax. I know it will get easier much quicker than babies though but as I was the one who truly wanted another dog, I feel obliged to shoulder most of the load.

Even having half hour on here whilst on my lunchbreak feels like I am shirking Grin I need to lighten up I think.

Sally the best thing about the crate is that he's safe in there and he can't get into any mischief. They look bloody horrible though. Hope your dd's recovery is swift and that she loves him - my kids dote on Jarvis already, he's their buddy.

We're feeding Burgess puppy sensitive. It's local to us but not really well know through PAH sell it. When he's older I'll probably move him to Burgess Supadog as it's not bad quality and very well priced but we'll see how his poohs are - they are loose still though he doesn't actually seem to do that many just does them on the carpet

Use bicarbonate of soda to clean. Bleach and cleaning agents seem to mark their territory apparently!

Bicarbonate is amazing stuff. You may have to lose the carpet.... If he persists. I've already made a mental note to roll up rugs and put away until the winter.

Awks, we've always used Simple Solution from PAH to clean up any toiletting accidents and are doing the same again. It doesn't smell as nice as it used to though - it smelled like play-doh when I last had a pup, now it just smells of cleaner. Seems to be working, as we are now on day two of no indoor toiletting at all.

Pip is a real livewire today, after all that sleep last night. He's pinched my slipper and run up the garden with it - with me trying to not look like I was chasing him to get it back. Blush Tried to steal my trainer, done his best landshark impression on me several times (fortunately responds to a loud squeal and turned back) and been brutal to poor old Lurcherboy who just stands there looking mournful while he bites his beard and ears. I keep having to rescue him, which is plainly ridiculous given that there's over 20 kg difference in weight between them and Lurcherboy can run like the wind. Daft dog. Grin

Managed to muster everyone to get his sample to the vets (all of a three minute walk) and even the on-duty vet came out to fuss over him. He said, 'we don't have many lurchers in, but we do have a lovely one called Lurcherboy', so I had to explain that Pip is Lurcherboy's new shadow and made the poor guy blush. The receptionist panicked when she saw me with a pup, as she thought we must have lost Lurcherboy as well as Oldgirl.

I know about the carpet, we haven't had any accidents today so fingers crossed. He's only done 3 craps today though, is that normal? I will go and buy some Simple Solution though, just in case! His pooh is really runny as well but he is drinking, eating, playing and is alert and quite beautifully normal that I think I won't worry about that unless you all go Noooooooooooooo take him to the vet NOW

My vet said many pups are a bit 'loose' their first week in their new home. Apparently it's a stress reaction.

Pip has just done his second poo of the day (only on fresh cooked chicken at the moment) and half was solid, the other runny. Disappointed, as the first one post diet change was completely normal, but hoping the vet is right and it's just the stress of leaving the litter and changing homes etc.

Bit concerned about my boy this evening - he's a chatty little fella generally ... but if I didn't know better, I'd swear he just miaowed! Shock Grin

Basildon, Tollers are lovely dogs - and he is soooo cute. [smile

Pip discovered the joys of torrential rain this morning. Dh took him out for a wee and he refused to move out from under dh's umbrella, even going as far as to try and force his way between dh's ankles to try and keep himself dry. Grin When that didn't work, he made a break for the back door and pounded on it squealing like a little piggy. Grin

Poor little mite came in looking like a punky drowned rat. He has no body fat and a very thin coat, so I think I'd better get onto ordering him a raincoat.

Reminded why we decided to get a pup in the summer rather than after the dcs go back to school though.

Basildon. Gorgeous!!!!! Toby is a fox red Labrador and utterly scrumptious. Can't wait to pick him up next week. His photos have been keeping DD's spirits up as she's in GOSH recovering from surgery. I'm sure once he's chewed her converse sneakers she may not be quite so enamoured! Wink

Moose poor old Pip. A raincoat sounds like a great idea. The lady across the road got one which she said was a breathable goretex fabric I think??
