Got our new puppy on Saturday. I was in tears this morning and I'm a pretty experienced dog owner. Its just so hard moaning cow that I am He is a 9 week old cocker and is a beautiful, cuddly boy but is a massive shitting machine. And not in the garden either.

So any new puppy owners want to weep in here then please do.

Forgot to say - little darling has now been asleep in his crate since 7.30 am.

My dd is only 9 months (yes we are slightly mental) and although we had agreed to wait a year before looking again for a dog, the perfect pup came up now.

On the plus side, DD is not quite mobile yet and we are VERY used to sleepless nights and our house being trashed.

It's my youngest. He is 6 but has autism and is non verbal. I need to be particularly vigilant as he drops food everywhere. I've also made a decision that raisins will now only be in his school lunchbox as I've seen a few press reports about raisins and grapes being poisonous for dogs as it can cause renal problems. He eats a lot of raisins.

We got Maggi, Yorkie / poodle cross, at the end of June (she's 4.5 months now). Seeing how much she loved playing with other dogs and thinking it would be good for her to grow up with a friend, we got Thor (also Yorkie / poodle, 11 weeks) yesterday.

After a lot of barking and tussling they end up sharing each other's kibble and Thor then fell asleep - at which point Maggi had to be restrained from poking him to wake him back up. They ended up falling asleep on their new cushion together and both even slept through (in separate rooms, though we want them in together eventually) which was a definite bonus.

When she got back from her walk this morning, Thor had just been brought downstairs in his crate and she was desperate to get in there and drag him out to play. Reminds me of DSIL's toddler when she brought the new baby home .

Moose! ((Hugs)) poor baby. He will get it eventually. SallyBear howled a bit to start with and then discovered what a comfy pillow Monty was so abandoned her bed and slept with him. They shared a bed for four years.

OK, just googled,which is embarrassing in itself given this is dog number 7 and you think I'd know what to do by now.

Feeling a little better, as it seems most pups tend to stop the nighttime serenade by around two weeks. I can cope better if I know it's not going to go on for months.

I feel like such an idiot, because dh went on and on about this before we got pup, but I really had forgotten about night waking. For some reason I can remember our second dog and that she woke once every night to go out for a week. I can remember clear as day standing in the garden in my pjs in the cold, ignoring her invitations to play while she steadfastly refused to wee. I thought that must have been what it was like with all of them, darn my hopeless holey memory. I hate it when dh is right!

Don't worry Moose I will be back here in two Mondays time saying much the same thing. Toby won't stop crying!!!

Have any of you tried leaving a radio on for them overnight? I seem to recall this curing our older dog's night howls almost instantly..

We got our pup on Saturday. She is 14 weeks old but her previous owners didn't want her anymore.
We are create training her which is going quite well. I feel a bit guilty about having to put her in when I can't supervise but I know it's for the best and she'll go in less and less as she becomes house trained.
I think her previous owners must have scolded her for doing the toilet because she is so nervous. She wants to do it on my living room carpet or she tries to break into the neighbours garden or she holds it like mad.

I must admit that despite being desperate for a dog and doing months on research I found myself thinking Oh my god why did I do this?
I feel better today as I've been so vigilant so it's been accident free so far.
I'm so tired!

Crannog, that's so sad that she's scared of toiletting. Poor thing.

We've had a better day today too.

Vet gave us some probiotic paste and recommended we put him on chicken and white fish only for a few days and he's completely stopped the explosive pooing episodes and seems a lot more comfortable and relaxed.

Also managed to get out and about to a lovely outdoor cafe for some socialisation and he loved it. (Discovered I can eat carrot cake whilst holding a half vaccinated pup on my lap and a large Lurcher's lead in the other hand - quite a skill if I do say so myself! )

Have realised I was getting a touch of cabin fever having only left the house to go around the block and to the local park for short periods carrying pup for socialisation and that plus lack of sleep had made me completely lose perspective. Feeling a lot more in control now.

Can't believe I hadn't twigged that he was conking out when the dses went to bed at 8.00. He's really tired tonight after his exciting cafe trip, but we've been mean and kept him up playing and dh has taken him for a late carry round the block as well, so we're hoping for a better night.

I've just come up to bed and she's been accident free all day. She even did a pee in the rain on her last walk of the day. It wasn't quick but it was an improvement. DH is in charge for the last 40 mins. Fingers crossed.

Just scaring myself reading this, we are getting our ridgeback puppy in 4 weeks so going to hang out in here for tips.

Yay - go Crannog pup! We are also accident free today, but I don't think I can take credit, as he's been watching Lurcherboy very closely and loves to copy everything he does.

Pup discovered rain at the weekend. It was very funny. It was just spotting and he kept turning round, looking at his back end, then looking at me really accusingly. Then he started to notice the spots appearing on the patio. First he tried to run away, then he remembered how brave he is and decided to try and pounce on every single one instead.

My dh crashed at 9.30, but that's ok given he was on the puppy shift last night and it's pretty full on for him at work at the moment.

I managed to keep pup awake up until five minutes ago, when not even his favourite tuggy toy being dramatically wiggled around the living room could persuade him out of his crate. His little head just got droopier and droopier and that was it - lights out!

Speaking of which, I'd better go to bed myself now.

sweetkitty, don't fret. I'm convinced I am just a lightweight. I'm sure it will go much more smoothly for you. I have only had one other dog that did this out of 7 - all but one being rescues, so you're in with a good chance.

Right really am off to bed now.

Morning all, there's loads of us with new pups so we can all gibber support one another which will be great for me anyway.

So, we are now on day 6 with Jarvis and it's getting better. Last night he went to sleep in his crate at midnight and cried at 3 am so we both got up and let him out for a wee. Put him back in his crate and he howled so dh went back down and tried to settle him but he howled again as soon as he left. He went down again after about 10 mins as we felt so sorry for him and told him to shut up and it was like a switch, he shut up . We got up at 7am, let him out and he wee'd and poohed in the garden like a regular Perfect Puppy. Bet it was a fluke but who cares.

His poohs are soft though not hard but he's eating, drinking, playing and doing everything he should so I will give it another day or so as vacs and worming can make their tummies a bit like that.

I'm like you lainie, take him out to wee every 20 mins and practically prostrate myself with excitement when he performs! Bloody hard work it is though.

Can't wait till I can take him for a walk I'll be so proud.

Crannog your poor little pup, how horrible for her. With lots of reassurance and no telling off I'm sure she will soon relax and it's brilliant progress you've made so far. Moosemama you sound like you have them both under control - we start at the socialisation classes our vets run on Monday, I'm looking forward to it and am sweetkitty am sure you will be fine too - I am by nature a flapper!

We brought Pup home last Friday, but didn't get home till 10.30 after leaving our holiday home in Ireland at 6.00 am and we all just collapsed - meaning Saturday is really day one for us I suppose.

Glad things are starting to get better for you with Jarvis, Awks.

We had a better night. He collapsed to sleep at 10.45, after I cruelly kept playing with him and dh took him for a carry around the block. We had a couple of squeaks, but he settled straight away and then he slept till 5.00 am! I feel almost human this morning. Dh got up at 6.00 and I went up to bed till 8.00 am, so I've actually had some decent stretches of sleep.

Finally got a poo sample for the vet this morning, after a whole day with none at all - and it was totally normal and healthy looking - phew!

Awks, I feel like I'm not doing enough socialisation compared to my previous pups, as they were all pre-dcs and getting everyone organised and out of the house every day whilst carrying Pip feels like a mammoth task.

Vets have delayed Pip's second vax until they're sure he's 100%, meaning he can't go down when we're out until the first week in September, which is the week he's due to start Puppy Classes. Just to make things easier, first class is first thing in the morning, right in the middle of Ds1 starting secondary, including travelling on LEA transport for an hour every morning for the first time ever, dd starting Reception and ds2 going back to Y5 - all three on three consecutive days. Think I will be a basket case by the end of that week.

I don't feel like I have anything under control at the moment and am particularly stressed about the yelling and screaming whenever I'm out of sight after all the work I've done recently to get Lurcherboy past his Separation Anxiety. Fortunately, the neighbours are away for another week and a half, so that has helped a bit, but I'm very aware that I'm still sleeping on the sofa with him in the lounge at the moment.

This morning he's decided to yell even if I'm just the other side of the dog gate and he's not in his crate and he redoubles his efforts if I dare to step out of his line of sight. It reminds me of when you're trying to put a baby down and every time you dare to move they spring awake. So frustrating.

Going to try and find some time to get onto it with clicker training today, as he seems to respond really well to the clicker.

Everlong I was like that yesterday, I was wiping up his pooh and he ran off with a bit of poohy ktchen roll wiping it all over himself and the floor.
TMB that is so exciting and Stanley is too cute a name. Moose that's brilliant - your night sounds so much better and long may it continue.

TooManyButtons, I love the name Stanley, one of my favourite ever dogs was called Stanley, Stan for short.

Awks, it was better, but only because we did so much yesterday and I am still sleeping on the sofa with his crate on the other side of the lounge. I was pleased with it first thing, until he started screaming when he was just a step away from me the other side of the dog gate.
