Got our new puppy on Saturday. I was in tears this morning and I'm a pretty experienced dog owner. Its just so hard moaning cow that I am He is a 9 week old cocker and is a beautiful, cuddly boy but is a massive shitting machine. And not in the garden either.

So any new puppy owners want to weep in here then please do.

poor Enzo - I hope he feels much better soon

sweetkitty · 03/09/2013 20:29

Oh no poor Enzo hope he has a good night and is better in the morning.

moosemama · 03/09/2013 21:52

Oh no! Poor little Enzo. We will be thinking of him tonight and keeping everything crossed that he turns a corner tonight and is much better by morning.

Sending very unmnetty hugs to you and your dh as well, you must be so worried about him.

Fab41 · 03/09/2013 21:59

Poor Enzo, really hope he is better in the morning.
Beryl's epic poo day got runnier as the day went on, and I made the mistake of looking up Purina Beta. I have now ordered a big bad of Eden food as all three can have the same and it looks much better for them.

Beryl had a good day and is curled up in her bed now.

Oh everlong I am so so sorry. Sending lots of get well wishes to Enzo Sad

T minus 2 weeks until Aulay is allowed out. I tried him on his lead today in the garden and he HATED it. Bucking against it, whimpering, etc. Any advice on how to overcome this (other than some smelly 'treats' and lots of practice?)

MissM, just put it on for literally a couple of seconds and feed him some smelly treats then take it straight off - hopefully he will start looking forward to having it on then, as it will signify yummy snacks. Then, once he's accepted it a little more you can gradually start building up the length of time he has it on for. Don't put any pressure at all on it while he's wearing it, just let it trail loosely. You could also try popping it on when you feed him, so he associates it with positive things happening to him.

You can help the process along by regular short sessions of putting gentle pressure on his collar when he's not wearing his lead, but as if the lead were pulling it and stuffing him full of super tasty treats while you do it, to make positive associations around neck pressure/being led.

Another dog as a stooge helps too. We find if we put on Pip's lead and then start feeding Lurcherboy treats, Pip quickly forgets he has his lead on in his haste to stuff his chops! Grin

Stiff legs can be a sign of abdominal pain, which makes sense if he has a really bad stomach. Poor little fella. Sad

butterfliesinmytummy · 03/09/2013 22:18

Keeping fingers crossed everlong, hope Enzo makes a speedy recovery.

I guess I'm a new puppy owner too. We have Luna, 10 wk old dalmation x labrador (dalmador?) who came home unexpectedly with us from the dog shelter on Saturday for the princely sum of $75. She's generally pretty good, had been in her crate a few times but we didn't have great expectations as she had been in a cage at the dog shelter. We have hard wood floors and we're using puppy pads to try to encourage her to wee there. She can't go out until she's had a load more vaccinations unfortunately, esp parvo (she's had one shot already). Apparently this is common in gardens here (we're in Texas) as its carried by mice etc and can live in the soil for several months. We're all dying to take her outside but we'll know more when we see our vet tomorrow (first apt I could get, Monday was a public holiday). They also vaccinate against rabies here as standard but that will be a bit later on.

I'd forgotten about the long skinny legs and big feet of puppies and we all laugh about her tail that seems to have a life of its own when she runs. The kids are running round the house with her to tire her out! She sleeps well at night and naps on dh's beanbag when he's not watching, not a whimper from her, and eats well. You could count her ribs when she arrived on Saturday but amazingly looks healthier already.

Great advice moose - will start gently with that tomorrow. He happily wears it in the car, when I leave it clipped on out of habit with B-dog in case I need to grab him quickly so will try the same when feeding. Thanks.

Hi butterflies - I love the name Luna! It was in my shortlist for DD but vetoed by DP (I got it in as a middle name though!) I bet your dalmador is super cute. I hope she continues to make such excellent progress Smile

moosemama · 03/09/2013 22:40

I only know about it because Lurcherboy had a water infection that reached his prostate earlier this year and he developed very stiff back legs. My vet also dismissed it, saying he'd probably over-exerted himself on a walk, but I did some research and discovered stiff rear legs are indeed a sign of abdominal pain and commonly found in dogs with prostate problems. The stiff legs stopped as soon as his infection was resolved.

Generally my vet is very good, but she wasn't on the ball with that and I'm a bit Hmm about it, as if he does develop any stiffness of the legs in future the insurance company might try to wriggle out of it by saying he's had similar symptoms in the past. Hmm

happygolucky0 · 03/09/2013 23:01

Get well soon Enzo.

Thanks Digard for the info on long coats. I have shit tzu. Yes I keep her in the shade. Or she goes there herself in the garden. How is your pup with going out for walks? Mine doesn't seem overly keen. She needs it though to get rid of the energy.

Ohalvo · 03/09/2013 23:25

Everlong, hows he going? Hope he (and you!) are feeling better. Our pup is currently on purina beta and definitely going to change him now!

Have uploaded a pic of floyd to my profile -8 weeks this mondaygone! We collect him next Monday (9th) !!! So excited to get our little wheaten home!

Have crate ready and anxious to begin house training ! In not sure what the breeder had been allowing as far as housetraining goes so not sure how advanced he will be! We have a 5 hour drive back from collecting him - should we stop every few hours to let him pee? And just put him down on a puppy pad? He will only have had first vacs on drive home!

Booked him in for second vac and microchipping the next day as going up north for a wedding end of the month and would like to take him!

Look forward to sharing stories!

SallyBear · 04/09/2013 07:21

Everlong - just checking in to see how Enzo is doing. Hope that you're seeing improving signs. ((Hugs))

LostInWales · 04/09/2013 08:08

Checking in on Enzo too. I had a quick work with god last night, although I'm not sure 'you are being such a sod at the moment at least be nice to a puppy' counts as a bona fide prayer, I like to think sometimes we have more of a dialogue, a very one sided dialogue Wink.

Poor little thing - keeping everything crossed for him and you

moosemama · 04/09/2013 10:28

Sad Am keeping everything crossed for poor little Enzo. Good luck at the vets this morning. x

Ohalvo, you need to make your profile public. I am desperate to see Wheaten puppy pics!

We had a 6 hour drive home with Pip, so stopped and put him on a puppy pad in the boot a couple of times. He didn't go on the pad, not surprising considering how new and scary everything was, but had done a wee in his bed when we got home.

We're off to the vets in a minute to finally get Pip going on his vaccinations. Dd is coming with me, as I couldn't get childcare this morning and she doesn't start school till tomorrow. Should be interesting, I've never taken a child with me to a vet appointment before. Hmm

TooManyButtons · 04/09/2013 10:43

Everlong, it's understandable that you're worried and I doubt I can reassure you, but it really doesn't sound like parvo. Parvo pups tend to go downhill much quicker and usually start with major vomiting and then the diarrhoea, which is usually bloody and has a unique, foul smell that is unlike anything else on earth.

Sending much love and light to you and your family and healing thoughts to little Enzo. Sad

From what I've been told, it's a horrific smell that you're never able to forget, so it doesn't sound at all like parvo if that's not the case.

Can't you bring him home if there's not going to be anyone there to watch over him overnight?

Have you got your insurance sorted? I really hope he doesn't need a referral.

I feel so sorry for you, as well as him, you must be beyond worried.
