Got our new puppy on Saturday. I was in tears this morning and I'm a pretty experienced dog owner. Its just so hard moaning cow that I am He is a 9 week old cocker and is a beautiful, cuddly boy but is a massive shitting machine. And not in the garden either.

So any new puppy owners want to weep in here then please do.

Sorry, that'll be me - I always talk too much! Blush Grin

Sorry to hear about Nala's heart murmur. Hope it's something that either resolves itself in time or is easily treatable.

I just caught Pip running off with ds2's new school shoes. Hmm I gave them to dh to do something with and he put them on the living room floor and went in the kitchen. Hmm

TooManyButtons · 02/09/2013 21:46

We're feeding Stanley on this; I did loads of research into the cheapest way of feeding the best food for him. The food is quite expensive but because it's really good quality he only needs a small amount. It smells lovely and he loves it.

And Beryl is an ace name for a dog Grin

Awks · 02/09/2013 21:55

Beryl is a good name. Hope it's a boy Grin

We're swapping from supadog sensitive (breeder's choice) to this one www.whichdogfood.co.uk/dog-food-reviews/0671/eden-multi-meat-and-fish-formula mainly as he lurves fish and this one gets good reviews and is well priced. Doing it gradually as have whole bag of supadog left

Beryl is on Purina Beta puppy, chicken and rice variety, and has been doing good solid poos so far. Currently flaked out on the floor, with my other two on the sofa beside.

I found puppy classes in our village hall starting next week, so she is signed up for them. Lots of puppy fun ahead.

YellowWellies · 03/09/2013 02:03

Fab Beryl was on our name shortlist for our Border pup - we settled on Betsy in the end. There are a lot of Borders on here - any useful tips before we collect her later this month? The dog food chat has been v helpful Smile Smile Smile Smile thanks all.

Fab41 · 03/09/2013 07:46

Three poos in the past 90 mins.... Hope that slows down. Off to the vet this morning for health check and micro chipping. Beryl is working her way through the dog toy box, but seems to have a ten second attention span.

Tips for a new border? Think toddler in the house and have everything up out of reach to begin with, she has been bringing us phone chargers and trying to get everything off the coffee table. And start training and socialising immediately, borders can be a real handful and I know a few who are not good with any other dogs due to lack of socialising.

SallyBear · 03/09/2013 10:56

Toby has blood in his poo again. Argh!!! I suspect that my little dustbin may have a sensitive tummy. I have him a bit of cheddar in his kong yesterday, now wondering if he's dairy intolerant. Off to get Canikur.
Somebody suggested pepto bismol but not sure that is a good idea.

sweetkitty · 03/09/2013 11:01

Loving Beryl and Betsy Grin

I've been doing loads of research on dog food (I have a food science background and am a nerd), wow the difference in some of the foods.

I think Eden looks really good and not pounds like Orijen, price is a factor for us as she's likely to be about 30kg maybe more so will be eating a lot. I did think about BARF but I think it would be too much for me.

Have now looked at the cats Whiskas ShockShockShockShockShock main ingredient cereal, 4% meat and animal derivatives, I have a box open but am going to look at getting him something else once it's finishe no wonder his poos stink the house out.

JaxTellerIsAllMine · 03/09/2013 12:24

on the f4d website I can get the superstars for £2 per 75g bag, cheaper than vet uk.

happygolucky0 · 03/09/2013 12:43

I have been weaning Jessie off tinned food to royal Cain dry food. She is pooing ok. Gosh I am off work this week and the staying home is quite isolating. I Take her out a few times a day but am abit limited in this ihot weather taking her too far as its so hot in the car.
Is it bad for them to travel when it's hot or is it just leaving them. I am only thinking of say a 20 min journey.
Also does anyone know if there is a age when it is ok to get their coat chopped as she us 13 weeks and seems so hot with it ( even though it looks lovely)

moosemama · 03/09/2013 13:32

Oh Sally, sorry to hear his tum's off again. Cheddar is a common culprit, but it could just be that he hasn't managed to rebalance his gut flora since his reaction to the initial food and once he's had some probiotics he'll be able to eat more things again.

Pip seems to be able to handle things so much better now. He's currently having a mix of roast chicken, Fish4Dogs Star Training Treats and Canan kibble for training and meals and supplements that nicely with random bits of mud, grass, leaves, sticks and anything else he can get down faster than I can say 'leave'.

Sweetkitty, I did a nutrition module as part of my canine studies course and every single person on the course immediately changed their dog's diet when they realised what they were feeding them.

With the higher quality foods you may find that she won't need to eat anywhere near as much as cheaper foods to get the same amount of energy and nutrition. The amount of food ours ate on Canagan compared to James Wellbeloved was considerably less, despite JW being considered a 'good brand'.

Jax, I know it's much cheaper on there. £1.90 a packet if you buy the 20 bag box, but I'm having to wait to buy that many in bulk, as last month was a tad expensive round here. I'm just did an order from Vet UK because I was ordering Canikur anyway and it was easier than having multiple deliveries.

Happy, it's not as bad in a moving car, if you have a window open or air conditioning she'll be fine. It's when you leave a dog in a stationary vehicle on a sunny day that it becomes dangerous, as there's no air circulation and the temperature inside the car can rise incredibly fast.

He seems fine though sleeping a kit again. You are right about the grey hairs. He's adding to my anxiety levels!Grin

SallyBear · 03/09/2013 16:05

Or even a LOT!

happygolucky0 · 03/09/2013 16:28

Thanks moosemama I am very grateful for your advice!

digerd · 03/09/2013 17:03

Happy. What breed of dog do you have? I have a tiny Lhasa Apso and she has thick fluffy hair. She is fine running around in the sun making her own breeze, but when I meet another woman and we chat for ages, she just sits still in the sun and then she gets overheated. So I make sure she /we are under the shade of a tree Smile
Dogs with short muzzles as mine has, are also at risk.

We never took any of our dogs with us in the car to go shopping in the summer as far cooler at home and dangerous left in a stationary car in the sun even for 20 minutes.

Thick coats theoretically are supposed to insulate from the cold and the heat, but undercoats must be matt free, even tiny one matts/knots.

LostInWales · 03/09/2013 17:25

LOVE the old fashioned names for dogs, one of my friends has a little terrier called Sid which I love.

Biscuit has got really dry flaky skin on her back, a bit like cradle cap, the vet has given me shampoo (the price of which I will never, ever, tell anyone) and told me to cut the egg out of her diet as egg/dairy can be commen allergens in pups, maybe that's the case with Toby as well. She is now only having Harrington's complete puppy food and a bit of oily fish every day. I've been massaging coconut oil in as well and she already looks loads better.

No accidents at all today Shock she is a very good girl plus I follow here around the whole time she is awake to watch for signals, I am exhausted!. Put her in a canvas re-usable carrier today, lined with fleece and a puppy pad and took her to do the school run. She was brilliant and didn't mind the busy road, noisy children or being stroked by sticky fingers. Good girl!

moosemama · 03/09/2013 17:43

Aw LIW, I bet she looked really cute in her own little doggie bag! Grin

Pip came with me to collect ds2 this afternoon too. He enjoyed plenty of fuss from children and parents alike and met an adult dog that was smaller than him! Grin

He's going for his re-vaccination appointment tomorrow morning and the puppy class instructor has been in touch to say she's booked him onto the next round, which starts on 16th October. It'll be a long way outside his critical socialisation period, but she said she thinks it sounds like we've been doing plenty to socialise him in every way possible, so he should have learned to be adaptive enough and as long as we get him out an about mixing with other dogs as soon possible he should be fine.

Feeling a little better about it all now.

LostInWales · 03/09/2013 17:51

I was rocking the Hollywood starlet dog in a bag look except I could probably make about three of those out of one of me. He met my friends Maltese/Shih-tzu cross this morning who looks like a proper lap dog and thinks she's a whippet, they were both the same size too! Had a really nice play together after a surprisingly deep growl or two.

moosemama · 03/09/2013 18:20

The little dog we met this afternoon wasn't too friendly - I was glad he was on lead and Pip was in my arms - but all Pip did was hide his head under my chin as it had a mega yap attack at him.

Everyone he meets comments on what beautiful eyes he has (they are really strange, sort of greeny grey with a bright electric blue band around now) and how gentle his face looks. It makes me laugh, because, yes he is gentle and sweet, but he's also a little monster when he has a mad half hour and is positively tyrannical to Lurcherboy sometimes. If they saw him mercilessly ragging Lurcherboy's neck I think their opinion of him would change in an instant! Grin

Oh god! That's awful!!! Poor baby boy! Of course I will keep him in my thoughts and I will cross Toby's paws for his cyber mucker. Get well soon Enzo! Everlong you must be beside yourself with worry Hmm

LostInWales · 03/09/2013 20:02

Noo, poor Enzo, hopefully the IV antibiotics will kick in very quickly. I will send up a prayer later if that's ok when I do my evening plead for an easier life Wink. I couldn't leave my dog overnight either. Fingers and paws crossed for you all.
