Got our new puppy on Saturday. I was in tears this morning and I'm a pretty experienced dog owner. Its just so hard moaning cow that I am He is a 9 week old cocker and is a beautiful, cuddly boy but is a massive shitting machine. And not in the garden either.

So any new puppy owners want to weep in here then please do.

Just had a look at Pip's eyes and they've turned green. Confused Dh's did that and ds1's, starting to wonder if it's something in the water!

Right off to read the thread.

moosemama · 01/09/2013 13:11

Happy, MamaBear lost a dog to Parvo and is avoiding using her garden for the pup until she's fully covered by her vaccinations.

Sally, I thought Advocate was supposed to stop all developmental stages of fleas. Could it be something he's picked up during one of his forays into the undergrowth?

LIW, she sounds like an absolute delight. Reinforces why it's important to find a good breeder who's willing to put all the extra effort to make sure their pups have already started learning things like housetraining before they leave for their new homes. Smile

How much egg does she get? Is is a whole egg each time? I wanted to start giving Pip some scrambled egg, but someone told me that too many eggs can bind nutrients and reduce absorption and they should be kept to a minimum. Not sure if that's true, but don't want to mess about with him now he's finally gaining weight. Your breeder certainly sounds like she knows what she's doing though, so perhaps I should try giving him the odd egg here and there for some extra kcals.

We've had a quiet morning today, but are just off out to town to get the boys a few bits for school. Lurcherboy is staying home, but Pip's coming along for the ride. Smile

SallyBear · 01/09/2013 13:51

We have had cats in the garden since Sally died, do maybe that's what he's picked up. I will give him a comb later to see if I pick up anything else. Poor puppy. Anyway he's looking very cute today. Curled up on DH's lap this morning for a snooze. Not too many weeks of that left before he's too big! I can't express fully just how happy he has made our lives. It feels like we've got our mojo back after Sally left us. :)

LostInWales · 01/09/2013 15:24

I'm so glad SallyBear, I can't imagine our house without a dog now, I'm not even thinking about how short their lives are compared to ours, just too heartbreaking. Toby is ridiculously cute though, be very hard to be unhappy in his company.

Biscuit got a big spoonful of the scrambled egg, I'd done 12 because the giant grumpy teen loves them too. I've emailed the breeder for some portion sizes so I'll pass on what she says. I normally give whippety boy a couple of eggs a week raw on his kibble and he adores them.

moosemama · 01/09/2013 15:51

Sally, that's lovely.

I feel the same, particularly when I see Lurcherboy and Pip playing together and the dcs playing with Pip.

Oldgirl was the sort of dog who would happily play for hours on end and the dcs loved throwing her ball and frisbee for her. She used to sit outside the kitchen window all the time with a big grin on her face trying to entice me outside for a game and after we lost her I couldn't bear to stand at the sink/worktop anymore, because every time I did the grief got a little bit bigger. Now I can look out of the window and still be a little sad that my girl isn't there, but smile or even laugh at Pip's antics. That is, when I'm not charging outside after him to retrieve mud/grass/greengage from his chops. Grin

Lurcherboy has raw eggs once or twice a week too, as he's raw fed anyway and a big, strong, healthy boy, but I'm very cautious about Pip's digestion at the moment. (Although why on earth I worry when he seems to be able to digest all manner of disgusting garden detrius with no problem at all, I don't know. Hmm)

Just back from two hours in town. I think I may have actually sat on every bench on the main street and was getting some very funny looks by the end of our trip, as people kept passing me on one bench then finding me on another when they walked back the other way. Blush Dh took ds2 to get his glasses fixed and was promptly told off because he's late for his eye test and told to come back in 20 minutes to have it done there and then. Then ds1 and dh went to get a sim for dh's old phone, so he's got one for school next week - and that little lot took two hours! We were supposed to be getting the boys' hair cut, but the hairdressers had just closed up shop for the day by the time we got there.

Still, we met four or five dogs, lots of different people, a scary clown selling balloon models, mobility scooters and wheelchairs, screaming babies and toddlers and no end of other interesting things for a puppy to be fascinated by.

We saw the strangest looking dog actually. It was clearly a staffie x terrier of some sort, but looked for all the world like a brindle staffie with a terrier's beardy head stuck on it. Completely smooth coated and staffie shaped at the back, with the head of a Scottie at the front. Confused I bet it was super cute as a puppy. Smile

Fab41 · 01/09/2013 17:11

Very excited to be joining in, as I have just had agreement to get a puppy. We already have two border terriers, an elderly 12yo boy and a rescued 3yo girl. DH felt that our girl was getting old before her time, so a puppy would be a good idea. I have been looking for months and dropping constant hints, and we are going to see a 4 month old girl tomorrow. We toyed with the idea of a different breed, but staying with what we know.

It's been 12 years since we had a puppy though, so feeling slightly apprehensive. Our rescue girl was 2 when we got her, so the chewing and house training was over. Might be a shock to the system...

Will post back once we pick her up tomorrow morning Smile

Well done Enzo, what a big boy now! It's like going back to having toddlers all this discussion of poos Grin. I was very excited today when I realised I already know her 'looking for a poo spot' sniff.

Tomorrow Fab41, eek, how exciting.

moosemama · 01/09/2013 17:30

Looking forward to seeing some photos Fab41. Smile

Way to go Enzo. Grin

Pip is totally crashed out after his shopping trip. He didn't even lift an eyelid when ds1 had a full meltdown. Shock

JaxTellerIsAllMine · 01/09/2013 17:43

had a little walk down to our local coffee shop today. Olly was fabulous! He walked really nicely (apart from the odd side to side thing) and didnt bother at all when people walked past with a pram, or when a cyclist went past or another dog. I praised gently, gave him a superstar and we looked in the shoe shop window. Grin He actually looked in the window on his back legs. It was hilarious (to DH and I)

Then we walked back up the street, sat outside coffee shop, he got fussed by the staff, people sitting outside and kiddies walking past too. He settled quicky chewed his lead and when the skate board boys went past he just looked.

Long may this continue... might take him out over to the field and he can watch big dog play this evening. He will be 11 wks old tomorrow, we are so proud of him, he is so calm.

moosemama · 01/09/2013 18:55

Jax, Pip and I were perusing shoe-shop windows today. He seemed very excited by it for some reason. Confused Same couldn't be said for Monsoon or Waterstones though. Grin

Your boys sounds like he's doing so well. He's going to grow up to be an awesome companion for you and your other dog. Smile

JaxTellerIsAllMine · 01/09/2013 19:37

thank you moose. He is a cutie pie. Maybe its the thought of all those shoes to chew! fresh shoes every day! Grin

moosemama · 01/09/2013 19:43

I hadn't thought of that.

Pip already has a penchant for stealing my slippers and running up the garden with them and today he decided my MBT trainers are very interesting. Fortunately they are too heavy for him to run off with. Grin

We keep all our shoes together in the hall and he's not allowed in there, so no chewing incidents - yet. He pinches my slippers if I take them off to put my feet on the sofa, so now I have to put them on the back of the sofa every time. Hmm Grin

Awks · 01/09/2013 20:20

Jarvis is a shoe nicker also. I have told the kids it's their fault if he chews their stupidly expensive trainers.

Can I ask how house training is going? jarvis is nearly 13 weeks, we've had him 3 weeks and he still has at least one wee accident a day. We had a run of wee free days but now are back to mopping up. How's everyone elses pups doing?

OP posts:
SallyBear · 01/09/2013 20:30

Awks, my breeder told me to put the water bowl out on the patio. It's worked, Toby has cut back hugely on wee accidents. One a day now, though he did a poo in DH's office today!

SallyBear · 01/09/2013 20:33

I should add that Toby is 10 weeks old today, so I'm very pleased with how well he has managed his bladder.

moosemama · 01/09/2013 20:59

AYC, we got ours from Doggie Solutions and they were very fast with delivery. We got ours in the sale for less than £50.00, but I think they're about £55.00 for the biggest size at the moment.

moosemama · 01/09/2013 20:59

Oops, wrong thread. Blush

moosemama · 01/09/2013 21:05

Pip has only had one wee accident that I can remember recently. It was when we came back from taking him out without Lurcherboy. He ran outside straight away, forgot to wee, then wet himself with joy at the sight of his big brother! Grin Fortunately he was in the back porch at the time.

I think it's like with dcs though Awks, some will be able to hold their bladder sooner than others. 13 weeks is still very young.

JaxTellerIsAllMine · 01/09/2013 23:13

toilet training is practically done and dusted for us. That said, we were upstairs this evening and DS was on puppy duty. He did a little wee on the floor - well DH said, but Im not sure whether it was spilled water from DC or puppy wee. I didnt clean it - DS did.

Olly goes outside for toilet by himself, I do take him, say busy busy and he gets on with it! He goes out around now (11) for bedtime wees/poos if needed and then bedtime biscuit and thats him until between 6/7 in morning.

Its just got better as the weeks have gone on. He will be 11 weeks tomorrow. 'Serious' fun training starts, have to remember to make it FUN! and not let myself get stressed. That is my issue though, putting pressure on myself to 'get it right' you would think after all these years of having dogs that I would know that it comes together soon enough, leaves when they hit 'teens' and sorts itself out again. Blush

Off to do bedtime dog things now. Night all.

SallyBear · 02/09/2013 08:30

Bless Toby. He went out before 11 and did a wee. Wouldn't do a poo so we trooped upstairs (he's in our room) and got ready for bed. He then went and sat at the door crying. DH took him out and he did wee and a poo outside. Back upstairs and slept next to me (on the floor) for 7 hours! Clever boy!!
Now in his basket and enjoying a Kong Toy stuffed with cheddar.

The breeder had wormed Toby at 8 weeks and we got some Drontal from
the vet on

SallyBear · 02/09/2013 08:34

Sorry dealing with puppy chasing a spider.

Got Drontal from the vet on Friday, and Advocate. Three months supply of the advocate but only one Drontal tablet!! Stupid receptionist. I gave him a whole tablet yesterday - omg the worms that came out of him! Ugh!! I know that the breeder had wormed him, but seriously we didn't see anything in his poo and I have been checking it (boak).

moosemama · 02/09/2013 09:17

Blimey Sally, I've never actually seen a worm with any of the dogs I've had over the past 20 odd years, not even the ones that came from very rough starts.

He should have been wormed fortnightly up until 12 weeks, then it should ideally be monthly up until 6 months and after that, either an adult schedule of 3 months Drontal Plus with additional flea and tick protection or monthly with Advocate with a 6 monthly top up of Drontal plus for tapeworm and something else, such as a Seresto Collar for ticks.

Drontal instructins say once every 3 months from 12 weeks, but I understand best practice is to keep it monthly until 6 months.

No wonder he's been so hungry with a worm burden like that - maybe his appetite will settle down a bit now.

By the way, we buy our Drontal from Vet UK much cheaper than paying vet's prices and no prescription required.

We've always done Drontal Plus and Frontline Spot On historically, but are moving to monthly Advocate now, due to worries about lungworm.

SallyBear · 02/09/2013 09:21

Oh well. He's having a good clear out now! Poor boy. Confused

I had said to DH this morning that we should just keep worming him in line with monthly advocate until he is six months - great minds and all that Moose!

moosemama · 02/09/2013 09:37

I'm dreading Pip being done, because I'm sure the vet should have given him another dose of Advocate by now, but she delayed worming and vax.

Am just off to call her actually, to see if they'll book him in for vax tomorrow evening.
