Got our new puppy on Saturday. I was in tears this morning and I'm a pretty experienced dog owner. Its just so hard moaning cow that I am He is a 9 week old cocker and is a beautiful, cuddly boy but is a massive shitting machine. And not in the garden either.

So any new puppy owners want to weep in here then please do.

Hopefully, but am pregnant and we don't know about the future with them but want to be able to keep them. We are feeding them puppy formula but will have to start weaning soon, but the vet advised waiting until four weeks, so a bit later than usual, because of their size at the start and although they are increasing a lot in weight, they haven't reached the desired amount for a puppy their age yet.

Awks · 20/08/2013 06:58

3 weeks, x 2 and you are pg? Blardy hell that's a lot on your plate but they are lucky it was you who found them and I hope they and you are ok

Hi Roasted, have just posted another couple of name suggestions on your thread. Wink

I think you are incredibly brave for taking on such young pups, let alone two at the same time. Hope our thread doesn't scare you off. Grin

So ... where are the photos? Wink

moosemama · 20/08/2013 08:51

Pip has has a bad stomach this morning, after almost a week of normal poos.

I knew it would probably happen, but Sad all the same.

He's still his usual self though. Stole the tv remote and ran off with it twice this morning, then bit ds1 on the bum (not hard) when he bent over to pick it up. Shock but Grin

Awks, they're bound to have the occasional accident, it's doesn't mean they're going to slip right back. If it happens again, just interrupt him and take him straight outside.

birdmomma · 20/08/2013 11:37

So sorry to hear about Pip, and hope the antibiotics work.

Autumn whined at the door to be let out for a wee and a poo tonight. no accidents in almost a week I think - hurrah!

SallyBear · 20/08/2013 11:50

Well we are getting accidents. Toted up about six in total since yesterday. Three on pads and three on the floor. DH didn't really get the pads idea. He does now! Angry
Anyway the tubster is at the vet having a check up, hoping that all is ok.
Last night DH camped on the sofa, Toby fell asleep 10 minutes later and DH tiptoed upstairs. He went down at 3 to check on him and woke him up, he then did two poos and wees in the garden and on a pad. He took about an hour to go back to sleep and DH tiptoed back upstairs. He woke up at 6. So good really, a couple of accidents but he is only 8 weeks old and only been with us for 48 hours. Smile

RoastedCouchPotatoes · 20/08/2013 12:43

Sympathy for all the accidents!

moosemama · 20/08/2013 14:43

Sounds like a good night all in all Sally. Accidents are a pain, but he's still so little - remember Pip is 11 weeks old now, so a good few weeks ahead in terms of bladder control.

Pip fell asleep in the comfiest dog bed, under the kitchen table last night. He seems to have claimed that one and Lurcherboy doesn't seem to mind. So I decided to leave him there and see what happened, but stayed on the sofa in the next room, just in case. First hour was great, then Lurcherboy decided to get up, go for an amble round the kitchen, have a very noisy drink of water and stick his nose in Pip's bed - result, one very awake puppy. Hmm

So, I popped him in his crate at midnight and didn't hear another peep from him until 5.30 am, when he went outside with me and did an enormous wee.

Think we will move him to sleeping in the kitchen bed fairly quickly, but for now - assuming the neighbours don't come back later (they said they may stay longer if the weather is good) I'm going to wait until he's asleep tonight, then sneak upstairs to bed. Will set up dd's old baby monitor so I can hear if he starts to stir, as our walls are pretty thick and we sleep on the opposite side of the house.

Ha - just as I typed that the neighbours pulled onto their drive. Hmm

Ah well - may give it a go anyway with the baby monitor to alert me to any Pip noises before he gets into full voice.

RoastedCouchPotatoes · 20/08/2013 15:16

I'm using a baby monitor, because we feed them formula every 3 and a half hours, but sometimes I can hear their snuffly noises and feed them a bit earlier, it depends on what they've done as they get more tired with starting to walk.

Can I ask about the pads? Our pups are just recognising the sleeping and eating area isn't for weeing in, but if we use pads, that would mask the odour and it might confuse them?

sweetkitty · 20/08/2013 16:20

Welcome to the thread roasted, wow that's a lot of work but am sure it will be worth it Grin

Aww poor Pip hope his tummy is better soon

Sallybear - not too bad a night and accidents are to be expected, I'm taking my rugs up and just having wooden floor downstairs so its easier to clean just like when DS was potty training Grin

Well Nala will be 8 weeks around the 12th Sept so not too long a wait. Saw another photo of her today she's just gorgeous.

Speaking of photos I will have to log in on old pc to see all these puppies Grin

A friend has offered us a crate which will save some initial outlay, Groupon are doing a deal on vets just now, £45 for 2 vaccs, checks, deworming and microchippibg have checked and its a good deal Grin

moosemama · 20/08/2013 19:01

Well, we're back from the vet and she was really pleased with him.

He's gained half a kg in a week and she was shocked at how much taller he's grown as well. She said, given how healthy he seems in general now, in all likelihood we should be able to knock the campylobacter on the head with one decent course of antibiotics, as he's obviously already winning the battle and it's just a bit grumbly now. Grin

I am so relieved. I totally panicked when I did the daft thing, Googled and came up with lots and lots of scary stories.

So basically he was weighed, had a quick check over, then spent the next ten minutes being loved, fussed and fed treats by our lovely vet. He was so relaxed he fell asleep in my arms! Grin

Oh ... and she said, given the size of his feet and knuckle bones, he's going to be a very big boy! Shock Good job these lurchery types fold up small! Grin

Awks · 20/08/2013 21:26

That's brilliant news, am so pleased for you Grin

Great news moose GrinGrinGrinGrin

SallyBear · 20/08/2013 22:17

Yay Pip!!!! Toby had his vet trip and that was all good! Had a couple of wee accidents in the house, even with the back door open! But more done outside than inside so he's slowly getting the idea. We think that he's got an idea of his name as he comes when called. We've been working on sit today, and he's so funny that I say sit, good sit when he does it reward with a treat and a fuss. Then I walk away turn round and he sits automatically waiting for his treat! Monkey! He was in seventh heaven this evening as he discovered that DS4 is the messiest eater in the world and that he left a lovely pile of fried rice on the floor with the odd bit of chicken. Smile

SallyBear · 20/08/2013 22:18

Meant to add that we've left him asleep in his bed and crept upstairs to our bed.

JaxTellerIsAllMine · 21/08/2013 07:10

w have had 2 nights of no wee during the night. hallelujah! long may it continue. Grin

hope all is well in puppyland for everyone.

SallyBear · 21/08/2013 07:13

Are you all crating??? Decided that DH's idea of leaving in a bed in the lounge is insane though he's messed in kitchen, hall and dining room (thank god for laminate wood floors). Toby's not chewed anything that I can see yet just toes....Smile

I cleared up a poo this morning and there was definitely blood in it. Should I be worried?

We have a crate, but its in DH's office. In the evening he just wants to sleep with us in the lounge, so we think we will bring it in there and then sneak off to bed once he's asleep. DH was worried that he'd mess, but I've got old cot sheets and towels so its not a big deal. I will also get a bit of vet bedding to line it with.

He was really good last night. DH checked on him at 1.30, I woke up at 3am and noticed a lack of DH went down and found DH on the sofa. Toby happy to see his mum. So I took over for about 30 mins and said night to him and went upstairs. I could hear him running about downstairs for about 3 mins crying looking for me but then he decided that we had gone to bed so he went back to his bed. Only found one poo and one wee which I think was during the 3 mins crying period.

Everlong, you sound like me! We had a bed in DH's office, in our room and one in the lounge when Sally was alive. She had a choice and a place to escape when the kids got too much. I suspect that we will do much the same once he's settled.

birdmomma · 21/08/2013 09:07

Hello, just back from puppy socialisation class. 5 puppies - 1 very nervous tiny thing, 3 friendly social ones ... and Autumn. She wanted to take on the enormous rottweiler puppy (a big softie) and was slightly grumpy with the others. She settled with a tasty chew, but she is definitely not high on the social spectrum when it comes to other dogs.

Other than that she is gorgeous, continuing to have no accidents and sleep through the night now.

happygolucky0 · 21/08/2013 09:09
