Help me choose a name please!

We are going tomorrow to the breeder to choose our puppy. We are happy with either a boy or a girl. They are field trained yellow/red Labradors. But DH and I are stuck for names.

Toby or Barnaby/Barney for a boy

Daisy or Ruby for a girl

But I'm still not sure. So suggestions please, I like people names as opposed to dog names and I like them to end in an "ee" sound.

I've always like Ruby for female dogs. Years ago my friend had a Rottie called Ruby and she was an absolute sweetheart.

We are having similar discussions in our house. Problem here is that we all have completely different ideas of what makes a good dog name. Dh likes quirky and a bit offbeat. I like something nice and solid sounding that I won't be embarrassed to call in the park and the dcs veer between horribly cutesy and downright bizarre.

Yep. Sounds like my house Moose! DH was saying what about Frankie for a boy after Frank Lampard or Chelsea for a girl. I won't repeat what I said...... DS3 said he liked Steve for a boy dog. You see my problem!

DS3 is 7 btw. Where he got Steve from I don't know? DD likes Skylar. But then she likes Skylar anyway!

Not so good on girls names, think they're much more difficult, but think there are loads of Molly, Daisy, Ruby, especially for labs, tbh, maybe Tilda, Macey, Maja,

If you went to our local park and called Molly ,Bella or Lucy you would be descended on by about 20 labs and retrievers so neither of those. What about Berry for a girl and James for a boy .

Will this help - or just make things worse?

I feel vindicated now Moosemama...my dogs name is on there despite the raised eyebrows I get out and about

We got our yellow lab a couple of weeks ago (sounds very much like your breeder - is it in Essex by any chance?) and we called him Sherlock as it means bright hair.

I have given up on dog names and moved on to drooling over gorgeous sighthound collars. My dog may have no name, but at least he'll be well dressed.

Actually, I've seen a lovely one for Lurcherboy. It's embroidered in the colours of my family's town in Ireland - and we're going there soon. I'm sooo tempted, but dh wouldn't be impressed, what with all the upcoming puppy expenditure.

He is called Mario Moosemamma and you would not believe the looks we get even though I don't think it is the worlds strangest name. He is a proper scruffy looking border terrier and I think it suits him!

Now my boys would love a dog called Mario (big computer game fans). I think that's a great name for a border terrier as well.

Ds gets really indignant about the game connection as he named the dog after his favourite footballer but to be honest he has an excellent moustache and when he is being a monkey dh calls him evil wario!

My boys aren't into football, so probably wouldn't have a clue who you're ds's favourite footballer is. It's Geek central round here - computer games, Pokemon and Star Wars I'm afraid. Sounds like he would be wholeheartedly unimpressed with them.

I absolutely love dogs that have moutaches and/or beards. Depending on their mood/behaviour, it either makes them look distinguised or downright comical.

Border terrier was high on my list of 'breeds to have next' - until I fell in love with another lurcher rescue pup. Which is probably only fair, as I'm not sure a border would be able to keep up with Lurcherboy at full throttle.

Ah no he is an utter geek too and took his beardy Mario to the carboot this morning and returned with a starwars game and 2 figures He likes Mario bros but it's not HIS Mario you see!

Never underestimate a Border, they are wily little beggers! One of my dogs best buddies is a young whippy...she can out run him flat out but he ducks and dives and does what he can to cut her off! He is a big bully though and he tries to sit on her so she pulls his beard

That's what I like about Borders though. I love the whole terrier attitude. I used to have a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier and I miss the stubborn nuttiness and comedy antics of terriers.

This time round my dream rescue was going to be a Whirrier (whippet x terrier). As it turns out, I haven't a clue what mix the lurcher pup we're hoping to get is ... but he's gorgeous. (I do think there may be some terrier in his mix though.)

It's not my thread - it's Sally's, but she's lovely so I think she'll forgive us.

I'm really hanging around to find out which puppy she chooses out of the litter when she goes for a second visit tomorrow!

We still don't have a name, but when your eldest wants to call the pup 'Vinegar' of all things, there's little hope of ever reaching an agreement really.

MILs golden retriever is called Ruby - it's a great name! Apparently she's named after the scullery maid in Upstairs Downstairs, though definitely not as much use around the house!

Our 12 week puppy is Otto so I second that as a name choice, also appears to be reasonably acceptable when shouted at high volume in public places.

What about Murphy?

Otto is a great name. Always makes me think of German gundogs!

He's a dachshund...we decided he needed a German name! Husband is a history teacher so the boys at school have given him a 'formal' name of 'Otto von Bisbark'.
