Hi,
We have a 14 month old black labrador, Pepper.
We've got an indoor kennel/crate (whatever we call them lol) for him, usually he only gets put in it when we go out as he can be a bit destructive if alone and has a little in the house accident. I think maybe separation anxiety, he also started standing on the computer desk when we tried training him to be in the sitting room while we're out, he's a big boy and the desk is fairly big to be honest but still don't want it breaking and also not sure why he feels the need to do it as it's not something he has ever done/tried to do if anybody is preset.
Anyway he also sometimes chooses to sleep in his kennel at night when it is in our bedroom, as a pup he used to take DHs socks into it, not to chew just as a little nest
.
Well we've just moved house and have a much smaller bedroom, a much smaller house if I'm honest but it's 2 bedrooms which we needed. So his kennel can't really be in the bedroom anymore, I had it folded away and only put it up if I was going to the shops. I did try him having the hallway as there is nothing in there for him to destroy but after a few perfect times he learnt to open the sitting room door (it's just a little push) and went a little crazy. So yeah back to kennel when we go out. But at night he has a little bed in our room.
Now the problem is he's a lovely lovely boy but he's very excitable and sociable so DH decided we should train him to sleep out of our bedroom before our son is born, we are also getting the cat used to this too, as we don't really want to just give birth and send him to sleep away as it may confuse him a lot.
So I've got his kennel up in the hallway and he has been sleeping out there for the last little bit...
To start with he was thrashing against the side and making a lot of noise, a couple of bars are bent! But he's stopped that now thankfully. The main problem is he is hurting himself somehow...
I first noticed a little scab on his ear but he has managed to pull it off (probably when he was thrashing before) and it just doesn't seem to be healing, it has actually got a bit bigger. At one point he was bleeding and shaking his head so it went all over the walls and if you stroked him all over you. I think it must be somewhat better as I haven't noticed as much blood and DH checks regularly that it's clean/not infected but it doesn't look to be scabbing over very well. I called the vets and they said there was nothing they could do for a cut on the ear but if it became infected they'd prescribe something. Now I've notice that he has a little sore looking bald circle on his leg, not that big and not bleeding just looks a bit raw/pinky coloured.
He also is taking ages about eating a meal, usually he would wolf down a bowl of food but now he sometimes takes a whole day about his breakfast meal, so he ends up having dinner at an odd hour because of it. Other days he does wolf it down but not so much anymore (although I wonder if it's the heat).
I'm worried he is getting very anxious sleeping away from us and I don't know how to make it better for him. I don't like seeing him hurt (although he doesn't appear in pain, no whinning etc). And my MIL commented that he looks skinny, although she doesn't see him often and she has an overweight female lab so DH says not to pay her much mind.
He's never been anxious in his kennel before, as I said he chooses to sleep in it if it's in our room. I've tried giving him a pillow from our bed for comfort but he had a bladder accident and it had to be binned. Still I tried it again and a second pillow in the bin. He has a pet pillow bed thing for during the day when he is out of his kennel but I don't want to put that in just incase. I have given him toys in there but he pays them no attention. I tried leaving the pc monitor on and the sitting room door open so there is a bit of light for him.
The toilet accidents are less frequent which is good but I am worried about his leg, DH thinks he is possibly chewing on it out of nervousness.
Once I put him in his kennel to go and greet some family arriving at the main door (it's a flat so there's a second door), I put our door on the snib and pulled it closed, he started whinning and making so much noise. I did go to the toilet after putting him in the kennel but before going to the door (pregnancy bladder lol) and he was perfectly fine, no whinning or anything, he is the same if I take some rubbish to the bin and leave him (even out of his kennel), I can hear him whinning from the bins in the garden.
Just wondering how I can help his separation issues, and if anybody else has had this, DH says he will get better as he gets used to it, I hope so! Any tips/shared experiences greatly appreciated! Sorry it's such a long post
Thanks
x
