Hot weather and appetite

My 1 year mixed breed has been off her food for the last couple of days, which is very unusual for her!
Is it likely to be general heat lethargy or could it be something more serious?
If she doesn't pick up by tomorrow I think I'll take her to the vet for a check up.

Well I can be half helpful here. My 10 month golden lab is eating as normal, a bit slower perhaps, but my friend's golden retriever is off
her food and sleeping a lot and she is assuming it is the weather.

I've heard lots of reports of dogs being off their food.

Mine is usually a proper gannet, but he even turned his nose up at fresh chicken yesterday.

We've found that feeding him much later at night than we usually do has helped, although he's still not eating anywhere near as much as he usually does.

He's quite a lazy boy anyway when we're home (he's a lurcher) but he's been even more lethargic than usual - in fact he' s been pretty much permanently horizontal.

If you're concerned though, do take her for a quick check up at the vets - better safe than sorry and you know your dog better than anyone else.

My greedy black lab is as greedy as ever, still munching for England. I think in the desert he would still be searching for food, he is a slave to his stomach. He is doing lots of sleeping and I feel sorry for him as he is only having short walks due to the heat. He is also doing lots of sunbathing even though the garden has lots of shade.

Keep your eye on him, if you are concerned I'd pop him to the vets just to put your mind at res.t

Mine is still eating but less than normal, only about half. He is self regulating and not all food motivated. As he is spending alot of time asleep next to the fan, I suspect he is just adjusting need and energy expenditure as required. He is lively enough when cooler.

My Doodle is still eating like he's starving but the Staffy has gone off his food.

If you are worried, call your vet. They should be happy to have a chat.

Thanks everyone. She's still not eating, so I'm going to call the vet and get some advice.

Let us know how you get on :) My older dog is a bit off his food, but the puppy is still scoffing as much as ever. I thought it was to do with maintenance v growth, as older dog is fully grown and the pup is still growing.

FayeKorgasm · 15/07/2013 12:44

I would speak to your vet but I am sure it is heat related. If the dog is weeing and pooing I wouldn't be too concerned.

My greedy greedy lab is still eating as though she won't eat again, but is v sleepy. Currently snoring at my feet Grin

needastrongone · 15/07/2013 12:48

Am I the only person whose dog is not bothered by the heat and is still eating anything that moves?

I hope your dog is ok though, let us know.

Hardhaton · 15/07/2013 12:51

My bulldog isn't eating much either, I'm not too concerned as long as he is still drinking as much.
