Letters addressed to your dog...

You know how it's illegal to open someone else's post, what happens with the letters from the vet addressed to the dog?

Am I his legal guardian because he's not an adult? Is that the same age as a human adult?

Am I his appointed guardian because he lacks the mental capacity to deal with his own correspondence?

Am I just supposed to read them to him because he can't read?

Or is it in fact his letter and I should just hand it to him and let him do what he wants with it? (probably eat it)

My dog got his report through from the behaviourist recently and had shredded it by the time I came home. It's the only letter he's ever ripped up!

My vet addresses all correspondence to my husband which annoys me as my husband has never once taken any of our pets to the vets.

Our vet addresses any appointments etc to
"The parents or carers of (dog'sname) (surname)"

my cats (close ears all dogs reading this) have got a postcard saying its jab time

although the actual card is addressed to me

My vet just addresses them straight to the pets with my surname, which is ok if they have people names, but one of my cats is called Flump, it just looks wrong, lol.

They also actually write the letter to them though, as in, Please tell your mum or dad that you are due vaccinations...

This is interesting as setting up these types of reminders is part of my job, how would you like them to be addressed?

In the past most popular opinion has been only, followed by

Oh I'm not overly bothered, I just find it funny to get letters addressed to Flump Foster* or Brock Foster (the dog).

I mean if it was me, I'd just write the letter to the owner because that's who it's for really, but know the computer stores them by pet name anyway so it's probably easier.

The whole letter being to them does make me a bit but that's because it makes me either the cat's mother or a bitch, surely? lol

*not my real surname but it does alliterate

I send out parcels to our customers (greyhound coats etc.) We are often told the name of the dog, and so I'd say about 40 - 50% of our parcels are addressed to the dog rather than the owner. Sometimes I address them to both - so parcel might say "Mrs Scuttle Butter and Binky the amazing Wolfhound" or similar. For our regular customers, we also do occasional fun and daffy titles - one went out recently to the Dowager Duchess of Teignmouth, or "Her Royal Zoominess". Adds to the gaiety of nations, and cheers up the lady in the Post Office - she always enjoys sending our parcels. Quite a few of our parcels are sent to people's workplaces, and we get a lot of very nice feedback saying that they have raised a smile among colleagues.
