puppy vs stairs

I've been carrying my lab puppy upstairs to bed on a night and down on a morning. She's baby-gated off from going upstairs through the day, as are the kids!

She's now 15 weeks and around 15kgs. It won't be long until she's going to be too heavy for me to lift. My vet's confirmed that she's fine to go up and down the stairs as long as it's slow and controlled.

Thing is.... she hates the stairs. I've left the baby gate open on an evening with treats on the steps and she still won't even attempt it.

How did you guys encourage your dogs to try the stairs??? I can't imagine carting her up there when she's fully grown!!!

Pup just copied Jas, but he can only go up. He sits at the top and cries pitifully until someone carries him back down. He's 16 weeks Grin

A treat on each tread and loads of encouragement!

Mine isn't allowed upstairs because of his elbow dysplasia...so he runs up them every time we leave a door accidentally open. So you could try telling her not to, lol.

MumOfTheMoos · 26/06/2013 08:54

We didn't have stairs at home when MooDog was a pup but when we visited my Mum's we spent a lot of time going up and down stairs with her.

So teaching her to come down I would go down backwards in front of her, encouraging her so she could see me and also know I was there to catch her.

Well this afternoon I tried the steps in the park - there were only 4 of them and it took 30 minutes, a lot of praise and my entire bag of cheese bits!!!!!!!

Think I'd better get more cheese...... again.

Oh God idirdog I just spat my tea out. That crashing noise after it falls!
Cats are mean man! Grin

That is hilarious!

When can puppies attempt stairs?
Mine is 12 weeks tomorrow. She can cope with up (as we learnt after an errant DH left the stairgate open) but we didn't let her come back down herself.
