Introducing new puppy to current dog- advice needed please

So we've had our Patterdale terrier dog for 3 years now and we've now got a new Patterdale bitch puppy. We've had her for two nights now and she's been incredibly whiney, scratching and barking etc, but as soon as our current dog shows up by her crate, she shuts up... Having had two sleepless nights we were wondering whether maybe it would just be a better idea to let her sleep with the current dog on the sofa (which she's been desperately trying to scramble on to for the past two days). Only problem is, our current dog gets a bit growly whenever she starts yapping and trying to play with him on the sofa, which is fair enough really. We're worried that if they spend the night together he might end up losing his temper and hurting her, but being with him is the only way to shut her up. Can anyone shed any light? Thanks : )

I wouldn't risk it personally. I've had my pup for 7 weeks now, and I still crate him at night so that he can't be a giant PITA and annoy the crap out of my older dog. They get on quite well now, and play all the time, but without supervision there's always the chance that things will get out of hand and the pup will get flattened (and he'd probably deserve it, the little git).

I crate my pup, but in the same room as the older dog so she gets comfort from seeing him/knowing he is there.

We also slept in the same room as the crate for a few nights to get her used to it.

During the day my pup will creep into the older ones bed while he is napping, and after an initial grumble he is fine. I wouldn't trust them alone yet though. She can plague him like anything, and doesn't always heed the warnings so we have to remove her.

I had my puppy separate for two nights and he howled the place down. Third night let them sleep together and didn't hear a peep.

Hmmm ok, she escaped twice last night and ended up on the sofa with the current one- shall I just give in?

I would leave mine to it if it wasn't for the fact the older one doesn't seem so keen. The pup loves him so, she tries to curl up with him at every opportunity - he just growls and snarls at her!
