Trimming toe nails

My 1 year old dog has an odd toe on each front paw. It doesn't reach the floor when she walks, so it gets long.
Can I trim it (if he will stay still), or should I go to the vet? It's beginning to irritate him as he's chewing it.
Thanks.

I trim our dog's claws, including the dewclaw.
I have a clipper like this one: www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4030486&f=PAD%2FpsNotAvailInUS%2FNo
I've been doing it myself as I was taught how to when I was a kid.

You can find guides online on how to do it, alternatively you can get your vet or dog groomer to cut the claws.

I personally don't cut too much off at a time as I can't see the blood vessel (and nerves) inside the claw.

Link fail - trying again: www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4030486&f=PAD%2FpsNotAvailInUS%2FNo

There are other models that are just as good, but nail clippers for humans should not be used afaik.
