Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound :o).

Come The Day
Come the day I take that final bend,
Can I count on you to be my friend?
To see I?m treated just and fair,
It means so much to know you care.

For, what the future holds in store,
Now that I can race no more,
Should be addressed for every hound,
Who parts the punter from his pound.

Tell them I don?t ask for much,
A kindly word, a gentle touch,
Somewhere warm to lay my head,
A meal each day to keep me fed,
Not just life- but quality,
This is how it ought to be.

Do not see me swept away,
I long to live another day,
With peace of mind, tranquillity,
And those who care surrounding me,
So tell them all- you have that choice,
I beg of you to be my voice.

I guess we also have the added complication of very young children and a cat.

Loving all these puppy pics.

I'll have another conversation with him again and then call the rescue. Typical that they seem to have lots of suitable dogs but no communication from them.

mistlethrush · 01/09/2013 16:21

Have you seen the two little whippet cross bitches that are newish on LL Peanut?

cinnamongreyhound · 01/09/2013 16:50

She's gorgeous LostInWales!!!

I totally agree about people over reacting to dogs especially when on a lead and totally under control. I think it's sad that children are afraid of dogs but then with so many rescues being anti small children it can't help the situation. I was always an animal loving child even though I didn't have a pet until my mum moved in with my stepdad as my dad doesn't really like animals (loves me house!). Ds2 will touch anything and I'm constantly having to keep an eye on him and remind him to ask first as not all dogs like children!

When we got Billy we visited the Sunday, home check weds and picked him up Saturday. I have also applied to scruples and they say if you haven't heard in 15 days then you have been unsuccessful. I applied to SLR today after giving them a call. We haven't found a suitable dog in a rescue that will home to young children.

I pm'd Kaye on LL about those bitches moosemama as their profile says they haven't had anything to do with cats. She said they haven't had anything to do with cats. I then replied saying I'd seen that but wondered if they formally cat tested or it was just dogs that had been exposed along the way that they knew about and I've had no reply :(

Went on greyhound walk today, we have one monthly locally. Was recommended another rescue but they only have two dogs at a time and none are cat safe. Peanut loved it but ds2 was horrible and totally showed me up. Next time he can go to work with dh!!!

moosemama · 01/09/2013 16:59

Cinnamon, Kaye can sometimes take a while to get back to you, as she's very hands on with the dogs and always run off her feet, especially if she's showing a lot of people dogs and/or trying to make space for new ones coming in. She can seem a bit abrupt, but it's just her way, her first and only priority is the dogs and making sure they go to the right homes first time.

Don't lose heart. The right dog will come along, better it takes longer and you get your dream dog, than rush and have it not work out.

We've been into town with Pip this afternoon. I spent most of the two hours we were there moving from bench to bench while dh took the dcs into various stores. Pip loved it, was really well behaved and is now crashed out in Lurcherboy's bed. (Lurcherboy is lying on my feet - where else? Grin)

PeanutPatty · 01/09/2013 17:05

I haven't Mistle. Will have a look, thanks.

mistlethrush · 01/09/2013 17:08

Yes, if it was a LL homecheck, I would pm the person that set the homecheck up as they would know whether you 'passed' and possibly even whether there were any dogs that might be 'suitable'.

We only got shown 2, despite not having the cat situation - it was a combination of DS being quite 'active' and really wanting a bitch.

PeanutPatty · 01/09/2013 17:15

We've already a bitch and she likes both bitches and dogs so I'm open to both. It's the relationship between the two dogs when they meet which will decide it I guess.

Our cat is hardly ever home anyway tho he does like to snooze the night on the sofa when he can be arsed to bless us with his presence.

moosemama · 02/09/2013 11:32

Urgh, just spoke to the vet and they are happy with him and want to get on with vaccinations, but he needs to restart the course because of the delay in his booster. So that'll be £££s, as he's due his next dose of Advocate as well. Hmm

On a more positive note, I have finally managed to sort out insurance for both dogs. Went with Petplan who were very thorough and went back to check things out with their underwriters for me several times before I agreed to go ahead.

I took them to task about having Lurcher down as a breed, when it's clearly a crossbreed and not a pedigree and can be any mix of sighthounds or sighthound and working breed, so they can't possibly predict likely health issues. I was pushy on this, as putting Lurcher instead of crossbreed for my boys pushed their premiums up by £10.00 a month - each! Shock

After some investigation with their underwriters, they agreed that as Lurcherboy's parents were 2 different crosses, containing 4 different breeds in total he could be classed as a crossbreed, bringing down the premium in the process and that, as we have no idea of Pip's heritage, but he doesn't resemble any one particular breed, he would also be classed as a crossbreed. So, at least we managed to save some money there to offset the vaccination fees. Mind you, it was still over £500 to insure the pair of them for the year!

cinnamongreyhound · 02/09/2013 12:44

It's such a shame the vet can't be a bit more lenient, especially as you've only had one of the two from initial vaccination! And you've been a good customer. The grandad of one of my minded children told me Jolly's the petshop were doing discounted vaccinations, don't know if that's still the case. I was a bit worried about how the vets would be but dh said it's tough Confused

cinnamongreyhound · 02/09/2013 12:45

Good news on him being all better though.

Can't move 3 out of 4 of my cats for insurance now as they are too old :(

PeanutPatty · 02/09/2013 13:18

Our old boy is no longer insured as they won't cover him!

cinnamongreyhound · 02/09/2013 13:21

Random question but I'd actually like a pic on my LL profile but I can't actually find a small enough photo, any idea how to decrease the size of a photo file?

cinnamongreyhound · 02/09/2013 13:36

The person fostering Flo just put she thinks she'd be ok with Cats. Dh really liked Pippy and I was a bit worried about Flo being a bit delicate with my great hulking greyhound but I think she's lovely too, feeling a little excited.

PeanutPatty · 02/09/2013 13:45

Good luck Cinnamon! Grin

moosemama · 02/09/2013 13:48

I think she's just being cautious about making sure he's properly covered. She is a very good vet and I do trust her judgement, so better safe than sorry, especially as Parvo is on the increase in the UK.

Still, we're really pleased that he's better and that's the most important thing.

I was really pleased with their insurance deals, as Lurcherboy only came out as £1.00 more than Pip and he's nearly 8 years old.

moosemama · 02/09/2013 13:52

Ooo cross posted, because dh phoned with woes about LEA transport for ds1. Angry

Flo is beautiful. I'll be keeping everything crossed for you cinnamon.

Not sure about the photo file size. We're on Macs here and you can select the quality of the file to reduce the file size when you save it.

mistlethrush · 02/09/2013 13:52

I saw that about Flo too Cinnamon! When you see some of the groups of dogs some people have together, the petite ness shouldn't bother you... Whippetlass has 3 tiny whippets and a hulking Robbie... Someone else has everything between an afghan down to a small scruffy terrier....

cinnamongreyhound · 02/09/2013 21:51

I was just worried about him bowling her over really! Have sent a couple of pm's to Flo's foster mum, she's her first foster and she says she's very clingy but doing well. She says she's trying to figure out her gsd but sleeps really well. She seems quite playful but the lady said Pippy was much more playful when she saw her. She recommended I sent a message to Kaye to register my interest so we'll see I guess.

Had a lovely doggy run today, just peanut a lurcher and black lab today. He loved the river was in so deep almost swimming!

cinnamongreyhound · 02/09/2013 21:52

What's up with transport moosemama?

mistlethrush · 02/09/2013 22:03

mistlehound is a good swimmer. Our last dog was a good swimmer too - she could go 3/4 across the Thames around Henley ish - but she was much more obvious in her swimming. Mistlehound is much more graceful - long strokes, not much thrashing, more swan like! She likes having a drink whilst swimming around too - although she's careful not to do that in the sea.

She is spending more of her time on her bed or the sofa downstairs when we go to bed. Some nights she comes up at around 4am. So I think that she's feeling less worried - just hope that the upcoming fireworks don't queer all that.

moosemama · 02/09/2013 22:33

Fingers crossed for you with Flo cinnamon. If Lurcherboy can play without sending Pip flying, I'm sure Peanut would be able to play with Flo.

Don't ask about the transport. If you'd asked this afternoon I would have said it was down to incompetent taxi firm and disorganised Local Education Authority coming together to supposedly provide a service. However, since then we've found out there's a dispute between the taxi firm and LEA and they've just been spinning us a line for a fortnight, saying the person we needed to speak to was on holiday.

End result is none of the kids on ds1's school run have transport set up and they're due to start on Thursday. Even worse when you consider they are all likely to have ASD and therefore need to be prepared well in advance with full details of times etc and a meeting the driver and escort. As it stands, they're saying they will get him there somehow, but that's not good enough for a child with autism who is already stressed to the max about starting a secondary that's an hour away without knowing any of the other pupils. Angry

Lurcherboy is the world's worst swimmer, all thrash and panic. Hilarious to watch, especially as he does the same thing every holiday and forgets where the sandbank is when wading up to his knees and suddenly disappears. Every single time! Grin

mistlethrush · 02/09/2013 22:38

Mistlehound managed to play with a VERY small fluffy, something cross on Sat - it was about 8" tall - but she was really good - and it only did a tumble once (and I think that that was more the dog expecting it rather than it being inflicted). She certainly knew it was a dog (hahaha) and that it needed gentle treatment (she didn't actually tough it at any time). Grin

cinnamongreyhound · 03/09/2013 06:52

Got a reply from Kaye and she wants Flo to be cat tested so has asked me to contact fosterer and see if there are any local ones she can test with.

mistlethrush · 03/09/2013 08:53

Sounds positive. Fingers crossed (Flo looks lovely, and from the sound of it, doesn't have any unhappy baggage apart from the break up of the home)

moosemama · 03/09/2013 13:02

Sounds promising cinnamon. Still keeping everything crossed for you.
