Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound :o).

Come The Day
Come the day I take that final bend,
Can I count on you to be my friend?
To see I?m treated just and fair,
It means so much to know you care.

For, what the future holds in store,
Now that I can race no more,
Should be addressed for every hound,
Who parts the punter from his pound.

Tell them I don?t ask for much,
A kindly word, a gentle touch,
Somewhere warm to lay my head,
A meal each day to keep me fed,
Not just life- but quality,
This is how it ought to be.

Do not see me swept away,
I long to live another day,
With peace of mind, tranquillity,
And those who care surrounding me,
So tell them all- you have that choice,
I beg of you to be my voice.

Thanks cinnamon.

Ha! Peanut, no way. Wouldn't part with either of them for all the money in the world. Grin

LIW, laugh away - everyone in the room (but me) did! I can see the funny side now, but wasn't very impressed at the time. Grin

I have some pictures of him roaching, but haven't posted them because he seriously looks like a dead puppy, especially as you can literally count every single rib when he stretches out. Sad

moosemama · 30/08/2013 21:50

I bet you won't sleep for excitement tonight LIW. So excited for you! Grin

cinnamongreyhound · 30/08/2013 21:53

They look so cute curled up in bed together :)

moosemama · 30/08/2013 21:57

What you can't see is the expression on Lurcherboy's face when Pip first climbed in with him. It was a cross between panic and disgust! Grin

Now I think he's secretly enjoying his cuddles, but feels he has to keep up appearances and do a bit of grumping before he snuggles down to sleep. Grin

He's getting better at playing more gently with Pip as well now. He's learned to roll around on his back and gently bat him, rather than charging around like an elephant and swatting the poor pup with his enormous feet. So, at least there's less screaming when they play together now!

LostInWales · 30/08/2013 22:06

I AM going to sleep, I need to be prepared for middle of the night wees and up at 6.30 adventures Grin. You know life for us has been shit for the longest time I cannot wait for a weekend that brings the children lots of happyness, it's about time and they totally deserve it. Wink

Whippety boy is thin as thin can be still, you can see each and every rib. Someone told me that sometimes they don't bulk up much until they get to about 2 years old. My lovely boy eats loads I just don't think he is destined to be chunky unlike me.

moosemama · 30/08/2013 22:31

I am sure your new pup will bring as much fun and laughter into your home as Pip has ours.

Good luck tomorrow. Smile

LostInWales · 30/08/2013 22:33

Going to sleep now. Honest Wink.

LadyTurmoil · 31/08/2013 01:03

"I don't know if any of you watch the Big Bang Theory but right now my excitement levels are probably on a par with Amy Farrar-Fowler getting her tiara" Oh yes, love that episode and all others. DH has rubik's cube Tshirt and DD has a soft kitty one that she loves. It's a great show - we got into it via my DD's science teacher who showed a clip in class which led to us getting all previous DVDs, just waiting for next series.

Pictures of your pups are lovely and lol at the omelette Smile

mistlethrush · 31/08/2013 08:59

Mistlehound isn't month 7 either Blush. I'm surprised we got on the pictures were so wonderful.

One of the hounds we see racing sometimes is painfully thin - but its built that way. You can clearly see its hips, all ribs etc. I wouldn't actually want a dog that was designed to look that thin. Having said that, we've managed to get a little surplus off mistlehound - there was just a little too much coverage. She's never going to be 'race' thin, we just want her to be a weight where she's health, fit and likely to be good for her legs and joints etc. She has put a lot of weight on since we got her, but a large proportion of that is muscle.

cinnamongreyhound · 31/08/2013 14:00

My Nelly got very thin in her old age, she was 21Kg towards the end of her life although she was less when I got her she spent most of her adult life around 24Kg.

I got up late today so didn't have time to take Peanut for a walk before Parkrun so took him with me. He got soooooo much fuss from loads of people and raced off at the start as one of the dogs we run with was there and his owner does a 21m 5K. My best is 26m 48 so I knew we weren't keeping up but Peanut didn't! Would have got a PB with such an awesome start but of course after a poo, trip to bin, 2 wees and 2 sniff stops we were actually 2m slower than I normally am.

Dh offered to help move my brother into his new flat so we rushed off there once I'd showered. We are off to a party in a bit which we can't take Peanut to so we put him in the boot of my mums fiesta to my brothers (our car had no seats in to fit his stuff and ds's went with my mum) He had a pootle around out the front of my brothers while we took everything up and then he settled down in my brothers living room :) On the way back was in our huge boot as there were no seat and took up most of it! Always amazes me how greyhounds can fit in such tiny spaces and spread out into the biggest!

moosemama · 31/08/2013 17:30

Lurcherboy was 23.5 kg after he was ill earlier this year, but usually sits somewhere just under 26.

I do think Pip will always be slightly built, as he's narrow and long, whereas Lurcherboy is more square set and sturdy. I reckon he's likely to end up taller, but lighter than Lurcherboy when he's fully grown.

We've been out today and carried him around a retail park, then to our local small petshop. The owners are lovely people and made a huge fuss of him and he was a big hit with a few of their customers too. Smile He's met lots and lots of different people today and taken it all in his stride, but I'm worried that he can't mix and socialise with other dogs yet.

He's started legging it back in the house when he hears a dog barking in the park, so it's reaching the point that his socialisation has to come first. I know from experience that dogs can be fine with the dogs in their own home, but not able to generalise that and end up developing fear aggression with any new dogs they meet.

His digestion seems fine now, he can tolerate the small amount of kibble and fish4dogs treats we've started using for training and to be honest, if he can cope with all the muck he digs up and eats from the garden I can only assume he's fully recovered.

Hoping the vets will vaccinate him on Monday or Tuesday, so he can go to his second puppy class. He's definitely going to miss the first one, but as I've paid for 6 week course in advance, I'd really like him to make it to the rest.

LadyTurmoil dh has Sheldon's robot tshirts, but bought them before he'd seen the episodes with them on, so was oblivious. He really likes them, but feels a bit self-conscious wearing them now, especially as he works in IT, so everyone watches TBBT. Grin

Cinnamon, Peanut sounds mahoosive if he fills your boot. Lurcherboy takes up about half of ours, but he does tend to curl up. He looks enormous in the boot of my Mum's Astra Sport though.

LostInWales · 31/08/2013 19:07

She is here! Excuse me whilst I just go squeeeeeeeeeeeeee (or tiara! Tiara! Tiaaaara!) She's been so good in the car (took my friend with me to hold her) and has settled into the house like she's been here forever. Whippety boy has been a star and been very kind and gentle with her (and tried in a confused fashion to hump her without having a clue, or the equipment Grin) Ooof, I'm exhausted.

mistlethrush · 31/08/2013 19:21

She's very pretty!

LostInWales · 31/08/2013 19:34

She is a lovely girl. I met all her family today and it was hard to keep up with the number of championships they had all won between them but best of all they were proper loved pets with plenty of soft space to curl up in and gardens to do zoomies together. She has a hell of a pedigree for a dog who is going to spend her life between cuddles and running on the beach Grin. I don't think it will be long before she is the boss of whippety boy though. Doesn't take up much boot space yet as currently she only weighs 6 pounds.

I love how pointys can curl themselves up into tiny spaces, although when camping with whippety boy I do have to point out that he is a little too big to jump up onto my knee. Not that he pays me any attention of course.

brunette123 · 31/08/2013 20:24

Aaah she is beautiful, so lovely. xx

PeanutPatty · 31/08/2013 22:58

Another pretty pooch.

Wrt the LL calendar I'm all out of guesses. Feel free to pm me! Bonzo is cute too.

Having a hideous evening with my youngest. He's wide awake full of cold and driving me crazy.

Took the mutt and the children out this afternoon. She was good as gold. Think the cheddar treats helped and for that I am thankful. Why oh why do people who are scared of dogs spend their time in a v popular dog walking location? The amount of children these days who are also frightened astounds me. I might email the place about the Yellow Dog project and see if they will display posters?

mistlethrush · 01/09/2013 07:51

Peanut - I agree. I got stomped up to and threatened and screamed at because my 'dangerous dog' ran round about 20' away from someone tobogganing in the winter. I had already called her away from the father and son when she approached for a stroke (you can see that's what she's doing - she goes in all non-aggressive and waggly). Of course, the collie owner didn't get approached...

I'm thinking of trying clicker training to try to help with the fireworks - fireworks go off, click, treat type thing - someone has suggested that it can work. First lot went off yesterday.

LostInWales · 01/09/2013 11:21

Fireworks already? Oh boy. Honestly I cannot believe anyone would think mistlehound was a scary dog. She is beautiful. Pointys are so friendly to everyone, the trouble we have on the beach is whippety boy wanting to say hello to everyone and see if their dogs would like to try and chase him. apart from the incident with my GP's Yorkshire terrier but he was only trying to play

There was a lady on the beach one day (when I was with about 7 whippets having the best zoomies ever) who was walking a dog but practically his behind a sand dune until we were all gone. I suppose they could take you out at the knees if they didn't look properly. Apparently she was terrified of dogs which did make me wonder why she would go to the most dog friendly beach in the area first thing in the morning (and did she not realise the thing she had on a lead was a dog?)

Puppy is being a star, no accidents (yet, ) and she is getting on really well with whippety boy, he is getting so many treats at the moment I think we may even manage to cover one rib Wink.

moosemama · 01/09/2013 13:15

People cross the road to and put their dogs back on lead in the park avoid Lurcherboy, so heaven knows what it'll be like when I start taking two out.

That's part of the reason we had to get another dog, poor old Lurcherboy had hardly anyone to play with when we were out on walks.

Oddly enough, the people who are most willing to allow him to play tend to be new puppy owners - I suppose because they are all hoping for lots of socialisation. As a result he has a bit of a harem of girly pups to play with these days. Grin

PeanutPatty · 01/09/2013 14:25

My dog does awesome zombies even tho not a pointy. Trouble is she becomes blinkered to anyone and everyone. The number of times I've nearly been taken out or my toddler has met the deck unexpectedly as a result of said mad five minutes are too numerous to mention.

Today's walk ended up as another two hour outing. Mainly due to toddler lagging behind, collecting stones and sticks and allsorts. On the plus side the dog is shattered. Nothing quite as satisfying as a pooped pooch. Unfortunately I am also pooped.

PeanutPatty · 01/09/2013 14:30

Grin zombies!! Zoomies. Flipping autocorrect.

Those who have rescued, how long has it taken from sending in an application or lodging interest in a dog to actually having a home check/visit/being given the green light to adopt?

Even though my other half is not keen on another dog I'm still curious to know the timescale. The rescue I initially applied to still haven come back to me and even more dogs have been added to their website so I'm really confused. If we are not suitable surely we'd be told?

YourHandInMyHand · 01/09/2013 15:26

Aaw lovely lovely puppie pics! Smile I've been soo lucky with ShyDog, apart from being shy she settled in marvellously, I don't think I'd have the energy or patience for a puppy to be honest so I will just have to coo over these on here.

ShyDog loves zoomies too, I think I'm quite lucky as where I live is in a city but behind my street is a long cycle route and a big meadow/grassland that loads of dog owners use so we always see other owners and their dogs on our walks. I don't have to worry about her crashing into us either as she runs around looking at you with the smug excited expression on her face, checking to see if you are watching and are suitably impressed. Grin

PeanutPatty did you tell the rescue your other half isn't keen?

(Another Big Bang Theory fan, also with a mini Sheldon!)

moosemama · 01/09/2013 15:56

Peanut, it took about 6 weeks in total for us, but part of that was because we were going on holiday at the wrong time, so initially deemed unsuitable.

The normal time for that rescue is 1-2 weeks from application to picking up your pup, but it can take longer for various reasons, particularly if you're in an area that's different to arrange home-checks for.

YourHand, ds1 just did an awesome, if accidential, Sheldon impression coming in from the car. Fortunately he was in a good mood, having just been bought a sim for his Dad's old phone, so took it in good humour when we all laughed at the same time. Grin

mistlethrush · 01/09/2013 16:04

We were homechecked on the Wednesday and picked the dog up Sunday week - mind you that was because DS and I were away for the week after the homecheck - otherwise we could have gone the weekend after the homecheck.

PeanutPatty · 01/09/2013 16:17

Application was made before he mentioned he'd prefer not to get another. Tbf its me that walks and cares for the dog anyway. I think his concern is floor space and general added responsibility. I think he'd be fine with another dog really. Think I caught him on a stressed out day.
