Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound :o).

Come The Day
Come the day I take that final bend,
Can I count on you to be my friend?
To see I?m treated just and fair,
It means so much to know you care.

For, what the future holds in store,
Now that I can race no more,
Should be addressed for every hound,
Who parts the punter from his pound.

Tell them I don?t ask for much,
A kindly word, a gentle touch,
Somewhere warm to lay my head,
A meal each day to keep me fed,
Not just life- but quality,
This is how it ought to be.

Do not see me swept away,
I long to live another day,
With peace of mind, tranquillity,
And those who care surrounding me,
So tell them all- you have that choice,
I beg of you to be my voice.

Moose - I nearly got involved in that sort of thing yesterday on a '6yo boys' thread and had to sit on my hands to not post something rude Blush

moosemama · 28/08/2013 22:16

Milo - he wasn't cat friendly.

Mistle, I shouldn't have taken the bait. I don't usually and should have known better. I think I am just exhausted, not doing too well neurologically/cognitively and trying so hard to get everything right with Pip that I'm hypersensitive.

To make things worse, dh told me off for posting my last post on the thread and said I should have just let it lie ... and I know he's right. Dagnabit, I hate it when I have to admit he's right! Hmm Grin

I am stepping away now.

cinnamongreyhound · 28/08/2013 22:19

May be another Milo :)

No one has replied since your last post moosemama so I reckon your won Wink

moosemama · 28/08/2013 22:21

Nah - they've all just gone to bed. I didn't show myself up in a very good light and left myself wide open for a comeback with that last paragraph. Blush

Milo was on my list of names for a male dog. I think it's quite popular with all the dogs being brought in from Ireland these days, as I've noticed other Irish dog names seem very popular at the moment - including Lurcherboy's real name, which is a tad annoying, as I'd never met another one until this year and now I know of several.

moosemama · 28/08/2013 22:30

Ah yes, now I remember him. In and out in no time at all. Lovely boy. Smile

mistlethrush · 28/08/2013 22:36

Milo is stunning.

We looked at a saluki cross as one of the potential dogs we could have homed - and DS immediately was attracted to her. She was very pretty - and is very gorgeous now (I have seen her more recently in the flesh). I spent quite some time talking to her owner (she was taken on shortly after we saw her) too. However, when I looked at my beautiful scruffy, whose beauty is less obvious, it just confirmed that we chose the right one for us.

PeanutPatty · 28/08/2013 22:36

Would have perfect I'm sure.

Don't worry about the other thread! As I've been told before by the Man about the House, other people won't always be receptive to my advice and so don't give them airtime. Just think yourself lucky they are not looking after our dog/children blah blah blah.

mistlethrush · 28/08/2013 22:52

Yes, ignore the goading. Very sensible to do what you have done.

I've used chilli sauce on the skirting boards to try to deter the chinchillas... so they turned their attention to the edge of the lampshade and book spines instead.... Blush

cinnamongreyhound · 29/08/2013 21:41

So had an up and down day!! Had an email this morning from lurcher SOS saying they'd consider us as our children have grown up with sight hounds and they'd want to see the children with peanut to make sure they respect him and we respond appropriately to their behaviour. YAY!

Spoke to the lady who had Mali and she has a litter of lurcher pups, said no thank you . She has a whippet grey cross she's going to cat test for me and another couple in mind who need homes but aren't actually with her.

Having sent more details to lurcherSOS she said no because of 'not feeling comfortable homing a dog where other people's children were involved' :( :( :(

Drove to meet Pie and although he's very calm, didn't jump or lick he also didn't even wag a tail to say hello and Peanut was not enthusiastic towards him at all :(. Dh said its because it was a strange place but with my first dog run I drove him to a strange place and got out and he went straight over to Jack and said hello very excitedly. We walked them together for about 30mins and let them off to wander the house together. Peanut growled at him a couple of times but mainly because he kept trying to mount him which presumably won't happen once he's been castrated. He's a lovely looking dog but just didn't feel he's right for us. Am I being too led by my heart/gut? Should I be more sensible about the dog we get? I feel a bit like a silly girl saying I just don't like it rather than a strong reason not to take a dog.

PeanutPatty · 29/08/2013 21:57

Never ignore your gut.

YourHandInMyHand · 29/08/2013 22:17

Hi everyone [waves] Grin

Not been around for a while, hope everyone and their pointies are well.

Will go have a read to catch up, this thread moves so fast!

moosemama · 29/08/2013 22:25

Cinnamon, I'd agree with Peanut, never ignore your gut feeling. If it didn't feel right, trust your instincts.

Hello YourHand, good to have you back! Smile

mistlethrush · 29/08/2013 22:28

Cinnamon - not the right dog. Don't ignore your gut or Peanut.

Mistlehound caught two biscuits from DH this evening Grin

moosemama · 29/08/2013 22:37

Go Mistlehound - she's really getting the hang of it now. Smile

I have noticed Pip appears to have a ridiculously poor sense of smell. If I drop a treat for him he snuffles around for ages trying to find it, even sniffing past it several times and if it's on grass - forget it.

I find this really odd, as Lurcherboy is quite 'tracky' with his nose and follows it everywhere, iyswim. He can find a dropped treat in the middle of our large lawn in about two seconds flat. Mind you, he does have a considerably large squishy hooter - for a pointy hound! Grin

mistlethrush · 29/08/2013 23:05

Mistlehound is quite a sniffer - she spends more of her time with her nose down rather than looking. She is less good at sniffing than our last dog though - she can't find treats as easily as our last dog.

cinnamongreyhound · 30/08/2013 07:39

My neighbours dh is off today so we didn't take her dog for a walk, peanut really missed him! He's reasonably sniffy but can smell food for miles. There's pizza on the road in our street at the moment and he's at it instantly very morning whereas I've forgotten from yesterday!

My boys are still in bed so I relaxing with a cuppa before my mindees arrive as dh has actually left for work on time today!

cinnamongreyhound · 30/08/2013 09:51

Just looking at your photos moosemama, love the one of pip about to jump on lurcherboy's tail. You're right he probably wouldn't be too hairy for dh. Your cakes are amazing!!!!

mistlethrush · 30/08/2013 10:48

Looking at Moose's pictures, its interesting that mistlethound is more scruffy than Moose's old boy - but has a thinner coat on most of her. She has a double coat effectively I think - a thin, slightly thicker than greyhound coat, then on top of that she has hairs that are really fine for the first 3/4" and then have a coarse 1" at the end which stick out on top. But she only has them on her back and flanks, with a bit of scruff around the edges. Her legs and undercarriage are short haired and much easier to mop with a towel than a thicker coated dog. She's clearly less prone to cold than whippets and greyhounds - but I do put her in a coat when its mid-winter or throwing it down and cold at the same time.

moosemama · 30/08/2013 11:10

Thank you cinnamon. Blush

Mistle I think the thickness of Lurcherboy's coat is quite collie-like, particularly around his neck-ruff, bloomers and tail. He has short hair on his legs like Mistlehound. His longer, really scruffy fur is confined to his flanks, face and chest and that's quite coarse and wiry, compared to the rest of him which is super-soft and silky.

Pip on the other hand, has a wispy super-soft coat (although that could be because it's still his puppy coat I suppose) with longer, soft guard hairs, but his is all over (excluding his legs and tail which are short-coated) rather than confined to particular areas.

I've noticed a lot of his Red/Fawn colouring seems to be gradually disappearing off the ends of the longer guard hairs, with the main length of the hairs being blue/grey/silver - hence the Blue Fawn colour name I suppose.

The white on his muzzle has an under-layer of blue/black on one side (the other side is white) and the longer, terriery, sticking up fur in front of his eyes has black tips on that side as well. Apparently that's another reason he can be described as Blue Fawn, as true Blue Fawn should have a black mask. Although, I came across a genetics site that said if they have a black nose then they they aren't true Blue Fawn, but a derivative of black - which seems a bit odd for a Red/Blue-grey dog. Confused

cinnamongreyhound · 30/08/2013 11:38

Peanut is blue brindle and has a greyish nose but definitely not black. He's just gone to lay in the patch of sun shining through the patio doors, none in the garden yet!

mistlethrush · 30/08/2013 11:43

We shall have to compare coats when we meet up at some stage Grin. I have a feeling lurcherboy has a thicker coat than mistlehound, but that's just looking at the photos. MH's guard hairs are certainly whispy - she does a really good windswept look, and has the most wonderful blonde highlights in her red coat... at times I have threatened to take her into the hairdresser to show them what they should be aiming for if they ever get someone in wanting blonde highlights on a red with a bit of curl... She has the sort of coat that you brush it and get it all pointing roughly in the same direction, she shakes 20sec later and its all a wave here, wave there sort of thing. She doesn't have such good khol eyemake up as my last dog though...

moosemama · 30/08/2013 11:53

Mistlehound's hair sounds like my dd's, all wayward curls, giving a beautiful windswept look 2 seconds after you've brushed it. Dd looked fab in her wetsuit this year, she had a real surfy beach-bum look going on! Grin

She's got dark blonde hair though, not red and she get's golden lights when she's been in the sun. I am very Envy of her hair.

Just had a peek at Mistlehound's coat on the LL calendar. She's definitely shaggier all over than Lurcherboy and has a shaggier tail too. His tail is flat/smooth and thick on the top, with collie the collie-type fringe underneath.

Pip's coat is similar to the cover dog's in terms of soft whispy guard hairs - and he has awesome eyeliner.

Dh's dream lurcher would have a coat like Bonzo's (May on the calendar). He's wanted an iron-grey scruffy, ever since he temporarily lodged with a family who had a deerhound lurcher while we were in transition from the Midlands to Lancs and he had to start work before our house had finished being built. Well actually, he'd love a Deerhound, but we're committed to rescues, so that's not likely to happen.

mistlethrush · 30/08/2013 12:38

Have you got room for Murphy too then Moose? He's a lovely dog - much more wolfhound than mistlehound, although not much taller from what I can remember.

I think the one that shows her coat best is in the winter selection - you can see how fine the 'guard' hairs are on that - and the fact that they don't make any kind of top coat at all really.

I'm coming at this from the pov of our last dog who did have a top coat and under coat - and the guard coat on her back was really quite coarse but also very good protection. And it took much longer to dry too! She had a much denser coat than mistlehound has, despite lacking the 'scruff'.

My DS would have the most marvelous 'surfer dude' hair if it was any longer - it starts to curl (mine's very curly) and has a delightful life of its own - noticeable even when its freshly cut and short. He used to go blonde in the summer - he how just goes a bit lighter, having gone quite dark brown now (I did this too).

LostInWales · 30/08/2013 12:46

Puppy, puppy, puppy! I don't know if any of you watch the Big Bang Theory but right now my excitement levels are probably on a par with Amy Farrar-Fowler getting her tiara Grin. Got all the bedding cleaned, puppy crate out and lots of fleece so any mess on beds can hopefully be quickly sorted. Whippety boy mostly looks a little confused. Puppy!

Sorry. Took whippety boy to the beach last night at 8pm with my friend and her dog. Discovered much to our panic that if you take a sand coloured dog to the beach at dusk it vanishes Grin. I whistled for him and he came straight back to me but all we could see at first was where the sand was being kicked up not the dog, was very cool.
