Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound :o).

Come The Day
Come the day I take that final bend,
Can I count on you to be my friend?
To see I?m treated just and fair,
It means so much to know you care.

For, what the future holds in store,
Now that I can race no more,
Should be addressed for every hound,
Who parts the punter from his pound.

Tell them I don?t ask for much,
A kindly word, a gentle touch,
Somewhere warm to lay my head,
A meal each day to keep me fed,
Not just life- but quality,
This is how it ought to be.

Do not see me swept away,
I long to live another day,
With peace of mind, tranquillity,
And those who care surrounding me,
So tell them all- you have that choice,
I beg of you to be my voice.

What is he/she?

PeanutPatty · 22/08/2013 22:15

It's everything you are right. It's the whole puppy package that is clearly all wrong for us at the moment. My youngest has started sleeping through so what am I even thinking about a puppy for!

It's the poodle puppy on EGLR.

We need a dog that is at least house trained. Bad enough following small children round with potties and shiz let alone having one eye on a puppy to wait for the "circling" to start. Assuming you're lucky enough to even get a warning!

mistlethrush · 22/08/2013 22:35

I like that LL have the 'other homeless hounds' section where other people can put their lurchers. Just helps to maximise the potential 'right home' options.

I have already posted one longish message from hols to have it eaten - so I'm not gonig to be long. Mistlehound appears to be having a whale of a time on her 'boarding' - sleeping on beds and everything! She'll be in for a shock when she gets home and she only has 'dog beds' option!.

Mistledog once found a badger latrine. It put the fox poo into perspective. Even she decided that she smelt so awful she was trying to rub it off....

cinnamongreyhound · 22/08/2013 22:47

I feel guilty though, having a LL homecheck and then getting a dog from somewhere else. But the lady who did our home check seemed to active encourage us to look elsewhere. I was quite taken by Dakota but I contacted them directly as they didn't respond on the board and they said we're too far away :(

PeanutPatty · 22/08/2013 22:48

I agree Mistle re LL other hounds.

I've never smelt badger poo, at least I haven't yet!

cinnamongreyhound · 22/08/2013 22:49

Rubbish about your post mistlethrush, we let Peanut pretty much anywhere (not on the bed while we're in it) and he's taken over one of our sofas when the boys go to bed Grin

mistlethrush · 22/08/2013 23:17

Mistlehound sits next to me on the sofa, and then when I go to bed she normally comes upstairs at the same time -she has a choice of 2 different beds (dffierent degrees of warmth) but in the heat she's been choosing to lie as close to me (off the bed) as possible, just on the carpet, next to one of her beds- although she sometimesmoves during the night.

I like LL because they really don't mine whether you get your lurcher through them or elsewhere, they're still interested and happy to suggest things if advice is required. And they have lots of connections with other rescues. And they are willing to consider homes across the country, with or without children / cats / other dogs etc...

I've seen some photos of mistlehound on her week boarding - she's going to have a shock coming home, having to not sleep on beds!!!

moosemama · 23/08/2013 09:21

Cinnamon, don't feel bad LL just want all homeless Lurchers to get homes, they really won't mind if you get one from different rescue. Smile

Scuttlebutter · 23/08/2013 09:42

Also, most rescues don't mind either, especially if you are looking for a dog with very specific qualities (e.g. must be cat friendly, can unicycle etc.)

Local rescues will also "swap" or pass on dogs to another rescue if they think it will help rehoming - again, the long term goal is to get the dog in to a home.

The only thing that really p*sses off rescues is time wasters who are either not really invested in homing a dog or who keep changing their minds about what they want.

And I'm typical of lots of homecheckers - I do homechecks for multiple charities (not all of them greyhound) as I'm on a FB group which matches up homecheckers with adopters needing homechecks - a brilliant idea as it means smaller rescues can effectively have a national reach for adoptions. Quite often at the homecheck stage, the discussion will draw out issues that suggest another rescue/dog type might be more or less suitable. Any reputable rescue worth its salt will be delighted that the homecheck has actually done its job, and matched the right dog to the right home.

cinnamongreyhound · 23/08/2013 09:52

Are you putting those together in equally as difficult to attain scuttlebutter? Cat friendly and unicycling Wink

moosemama · 23/08/2013 10:02

Nah - I believe unicycling is much easier than cat training. Wink Grin

froubylou · 23/08/2013 10:09

Love the idea of a unicycling lurcher lol. Would he have to wear cycling clips if he has hairy legs?

Do any of you regret teaching your dog tricks? I taught Maggie to speak a few months ago and now she never shuts up lol. Just had a bowl of cereal and left the bowl on the side as I have the top of the hob soaking in the sink and she has mumbled and woofed and chuffed at me until I moved it lol.

She speaks when she wants to go out. Speaks if you open the biscuit cupboard. Speaks when it's school run time. Speaks if she sees a plate she thinks may have something on she might fancy.

She's a bloody gobshite. And as sharp as they come.

moosemama · 23/08/2013 12:04

Frouby, Maggie sounds like great fun! I learned very early on, never to teach speak without teaching quiet at the same time. Wink

Pip is a right gobby so and so, but sounds like the cat from the old public awareness films "Charlie says ....". Tis very funny. Grin

Lurcherboy doesn't really do tricks, but my Soft Coated Wheaten used to have a wide repertoire, as we did Heelwork to Music together. She could, weave, spin, twirl, wave, sneeze, hide, speak, bow and loads more.

I think Pip is going to be up for learning some, he's bright as a button and already displays really cute behaviours I could capture. He does a super sweet beg and wave I could grab if I'm nifty enough with the clicker.

cinnamongreyhound · 23/08/2013 13:26

Just seen response from greyhound gap basically saying they won't home any of their dogs with young children, so better forget any of theirs :(

Looked at Tally on EGLR too but haven't shown her to dh yet, she's cat safe and gorgeous!

PeanutPatty · 23/08/2013 16:15

I also love Tally. Those ears!

Alice on Lurcher SOS is another beauty.

Like has been said already, rescues simply want dogs rehomed no matter where up resue from. Perhaps don't go and buy a pedigree pup as I would imagine that is the ultimate kick in the teeth.

cinnamongreyhound · 23/08/2013 16:36

Have just looked at Alice she's gorgeous but doesn't mention her cat status. Haven't heard of lurcher SOS before.

cinnamongreyhound · 23/08/2013 16:41

Lurcher SOS also say they won't rehome with children under 6 :(

PeanutPatty · 23/08/2013 17:01

Alice is cat friendly.

It's a real PITA about children under 6 isn't it? If that is the case I've no hope of rehoming a rescue.

moosemama · 23/08/2013 17:05

Is Tally a Podenco or Podenco cross - she has a strong look of one. There were lots of updates about her in foster just before we went on holiday. She seems really lovely.

Scuttlebutter · 23/08/2013 17:15

Lots of greyhound rescues WILL rehome to people with younger DC. There are actually quite a few MNetters who have both. Cunny got her dog from Lincolnshire Greyhound Trust and her DD is only 2 now so was very tiny when he arrived. Greyhound Rescue Wales will adopt to families, as will Greyhound Welfare (South Wales RGT). EGLR will rehome to families but sensibly take it on a dog by dog basis. Pretty sure Shropshire & Borders Greyhound Rescue will as well. Greyhound Rescue West of England cover pretty much most of the UK and will also take a dog by dog view. Our local all breed rescue, Hope Rescue, often has sighthounds, and has pretty good national coverage, they also have a sensible dog by dog approach. I've focused on S Wales and S west, but a quick google search will throw up many more.

PeanutPatty · 23/08/2013 17:15

Pretty sure a Podenco. I'd be unsure about her recall but that is because I'd like a dog I could let off lead. She is totally gorgeous!

cinnamongreyhound · 23/08/2013 17:21

The GRWE told me I was too far away as I was interested in Dakota.

We got peanut from the local RGT and they were happy for us to have him with small children and he's a pretty big greyhound.

cinnamongreyhound · 23/08/2013 17:24

I have no idea what Tally is but she's gorgeous!

Anyone any idea how long we'll wait for the outcome of our home check with LL?

PeanutPatty · 23/08/2013 17:25

Not long I wouldn't have thought. You could always call them, tho whether that's "etiquette" or not I don't know.
