Clippers - Groomers

Im investing in a new pair of clippers for my poodles, i have been doing them myself fo the last 6 months with a cheap pair, And now i feel that a decent pair would be justified, Thinking Oster or Aesculap !!?? Any advice,
Groomers out their Which ones do you use??

I'd like to know too!

Personally I like Oster or Moser clippers. The most important thing is to have access to good quality sharpening to ensure the long term effectiveness.

Where do you get yours sharpened??
And how often, i would only be using the for two toy poodles every 6 weeks.

Doing a two whole dogs to get a good cut you need to thoroughly clean between each dog and use Oster clipper oil between each one. And then often sharpen after two dogs.

Sharpened after 2 cuts, that seems a lot They're only tiny, are you sure??

I was told every 6 - 8 cuts for a horse!! so toy poodles can not seriously be every 2 cuts, can they??

I did two cats the other week I changed the blades for the last quarter of the second cat. The blades are much finer than horse clippers so blunt quicker. Yes you can make them last longer, but you will get a less neat clip.

Andis are pretty good, been using them for nearly 20 years after having Oster since I was a kid but found them heavy and overheated a lot. The blades if you take care of them won't need sharpened more than every six months. I use Shear Ease Ltd for blade and scissor sharpening.

For a poodle you will need 2 blades minimum a #10 (or 15) for face, feet & tail (if trimming in lamb trim) and a #5 (or 7) for body. A couple of comb attachments will work on a #15 if you want a longer look. Blades do heat up especially as clippers are now higher power so having two sets of blades means as one heats swap and cool down as working with a hot blade will put a dog of grooming for life!

To keep blades in good condition ALWAYS clip a clean coat, ideally your dog should be brushed & combed to the skin, bathed, dried very well using a slicker & comb then clipped. Blades should be cleaned and oiled after each session and wrapped in oiled paper for storage between clips, only because you don't use them daily as a groomer would.

You will also need scissors but you will get a generic pair nothing fancy but nice and sharp for about £30. Cat hair is much different that poodle and does dull blades quickly, so I can understand the need for more blades and sharpening with them.

If you buy good blades, good clippers and look after them they will last you the life of your dogs and longer!

Thank you both and Multitask for such detail, i always bath them 1st ( they love it!1) and comb all knots to skin, i do have a good pair of hairdressing scissors I shall know go off and price up my investment, my girls are only 3 so have lots of cutting to do!!
