Dog ramp or harness for getting in and out of the car?

One of my dogs is struggling to get in and out of the car these days. Those of you with experience with this, do you think a dog ramp or a lifting harness is better for helping a dog get in and out of the car? He is usually on the back seat, rather than in the boot, so we might not always be able to park somewhere with space for a ramp (or I suppose he might have to get used to the boot).

Any suggestions as to what is best?

Thanks, 34DD, that's really helpful. I think a ramp sounds more practical than a harness to lift him, although I will have to train him to use the ramp.

84kilos is rather large! Mine is of a weight where I could lift him if I need to. (Maybe you are super-strong and could life 84kg but I know I couldn't!).

I have the harness made by ruffwear.co.uk its the webmaster one. I leave mine on the dog all day and as it's got a handle on I use it all the time to help him up and down stairs, in and out the car, up steps etc. My dog weighs 15 kg and the harness is very solid, it takes all his weight.

VeganCow, I hadn't thought about being able to use a harness in the house too, that's really useful to know. 34DD, it's good to know that the ramp is stable even with a very heavy dog on it! Mine is 28kg so the ramp is probably easier but I can lift him, so a harness could work too. Many thanks to both of you!

Thank you! I like the look of it (I like ruffwear stuff in general, it tends to be well-made). I think we are going to try the harness and see how it goes.
