Hi does anyone have a cavapoo and if so can you advise me what questions I should be asking breeders when I go to look for a puppy. TIA

I don't know the answer to your question. I just wanted to ask, whar in earth is a cavapoo, I assume a crossbred poodle and something?

A cavalier, that is so obvious. I apologise for my denseness.

If they've been tested for everything a cav and a poodle should be tested for - not a check up at the vets but proper health tests with relevant certificates.

They are one of the most popular "designer" crossbreeds at the moment so you should be careful you're not getting from from a backyard breeder who's just doing it for the money. Cavaliers are notorious for heart murmurs so health checks are important. Also, just because it's a poodle cross doesn't mean it won't shed, as the cav part may be more dominant in the pup you end up choosing. Why don't you go for a pure poodle or look at www.poodlesinneed.com/Pages/default.aspx for a rescue? Just a thought

Get a mongrel from a rescue instead. A 'cavapoo'? Jesus Christ.

I have a cavalier from a good breeder who has all the scans and checks done. He said with so many inbreeding problems with cavaliers, to mix it with another breed without checks is asking for trouble!
Have a look at the kennel club approved breeders and get some advice about what checks should be done. And ask any breeder for evidence, not just their word!

I'm with the previous couple of posters, I know 2 close relatives and other people with cavaliers who have nothing but problems with them due to extensive inbreeding and to mix them with another breed is really asking for trouble indeed. I really abhor this practice of mixing two or more breeds who are inherently not compatible and getting the gullible public to pay extortionate amounts of money for them. I've just seen "cavajackapoos" ffs on sale for £650!!!! Please bear in mind that these dogs are not "designer breeds"...they're mongrels. And nothing wrong with mongrels but to say otherwise is ridiculous. And because they are in fact mongrels, you'd be better saving your money and getting a mongrel from a rescue. Win win all round.

KC approved breeders would only breed single pedigree dogs such as Cavs or Poodles separately, and many puppy farmers register their litters with the KC. Sadly, cavapoos and many of the other poo dogs are mainly bred by puppy farmers, and sold via wholesalers on internet sites. By buying one of these dogs you will be contributing to the ongoing horrors of puppy farming. Typically, wholesalers buy in bulk from the farms and then place litters with a network of front families to give the mistaken impression of a family background. Nothing could be further from the truth. As others have said, Cavaliers are prone to a horrific range of illnesses - if you must buy one of these little dogs, then read up carefully on all the current tests, the databases that the KC have on tested dogs etc.

I agree with everything that has already been said. Why do you want one of these particular mongrels? Why not a poodle or a cav? Or why not just a general mongrel without a silly name?

I just remembered complimenting a fellow dog owner on their adorable little poodle mix type pup - oh what a sweet little cross, etc!

Another vote for a pure poodle here. At the time we got him I confess I looked at some of the fashionable "cross" types, but could never convince myself that the breeders were legit... and got very sage advice on here telling me not to!

Because people who want a dog with a stupid name and are willing to pay £££ for it are not generally people who give a shit about where the dog has come from or how it was bred. Plus any crossbreed, no matter how 'designer' is by definition a mongrel. I would say to anyone who is thinking about getting a dog to get a rescue.

These stupid names for mongrels really get on my tits. A woman in the vets the other week proudly told me she bred 'Jack-shitapoos'. FFS.

MIne has pom poms a hat currently more top hat dimensions that bowler hat and a one on his tail but short everywhere else.
i think he looks fab a cross between an alpaca and a Rastafarian.
But as already said you can do whatever you like.
Miniature poodles are I understand very healthy (unlike Cavs) and the longest living breed of dog 18 is apparently normal.

Right the cavalier should have the following tests Heart testing done yearly and Cm/sm syringomyelia ? The poodle shoud have Been dna tested for prdc pra 1 ? The poodle should also have its elbows and hips scored. These results can be found on the kennel club web sight using the dogs kennel names. Personally i would never touch a designer dog but each to their own :)
