My mum wants a puppy and works full time.

Am not sure what to say to her at all. She does shift work full time and is out for 8 hours at a time.

A friends dog has just had a litter of 2 week old Minature Yorkie pups and is trying to persuade mum to take the only male left. ( at 12 weeks) she is a kennel club reg. breeder.

Apart from only ever owning an adult dog who died a few years ago, she has no experience of a puppy whatsoever. i can see she won't have time to house train it etc.
I've recommended the perfect puppy book to read for research but she'll probably go ahead and get it anyway ( and not read the book!)

Should I try to dissuade her?

It's a dreadful idea. Adult dogs can sometimes cope with living in a home with a FT worker - pups never. It isn't just about housetraining either - it's about interaction and ensuring the pup gets plenty of training/exposure to new experiences etc at critical times of development. Skimping on this will lead to a lifetime of psychological issues and problems.

Please, please don't enable her in any way.

And being a KC registered breeder means nothing - most puppy farmers are, and her actions prove she is not responsible as no reputable breeder would home to an owner who was out all day.

Terrible idea. Puppies are like toddlers, they need constant supervision and interaction. There is one asleep on my foot right now, and when I move he will cry :(

Its making me so sad. Her heart is in the right place and she's lonely so wants this pup as a companion. She spoilt her last dog rotten (it had a place at the table, no manners at all and had the run of the house) and I can see this pup learning lots of bad habits too. She really doesn't have any idea about how much socialising, interaction it's going to to need!

However, this breeder ( who's dog incidentally won best toy at crufts this year!!) has said she would have the dog for part of the day while mum was working. Eg. leave it at home for 4 hours, then collect it and walk it, then take it back to her house and mum picks it up after work. Maybe this is a better idea but i just hope the breeder is not just saying this to get mum to take the dog and then not follow through.

Hope your mum doesn't do this. I have worked when our dogs have been older and secure with us ,but been lucky not to have to leave them all day, every day. Puppies need people to be with them. One of my dogs was bought by people who worked full time, and had a child. They crated the pup, had different people coming in every couple of hours to let her out to toilet, and then re-crate her. She was back with the breeder by 12 weeks and came to me at 18 weeks. i've had a number of older rescue dogs, have fostered dogs, but can honestly say, this was the most challenging dog I ever had. Those early weeks are so important and you know this - it isn't fair on the animal.
