Bastard dog has split a nail. DH said he was limping at lunchtime but he ran about like a mad thing at tea time. Just looked and he has bust a nail and the pink inside is showing .

Will he need the vet?

Ouch I don't know tbh. Can you ring them and ask for advice?

ExitPursuedByABear · 26/04/2013 21:22

I will end up taking him. But it will be Saturday and I might not get an appointment. It looks so sore. Poor boy.

Thanks for replying chickens

That is what I was hoping. Could you see the soft pink inside? I remember a friend paying a fortune to have a nail removed but I am sure it will grow.

Could you wrap a plaster around it? Or would he just eat it?

ExitPursuedByABear · 26/04/2013 22:20

It wouldn't last long. He seems ok in himself. We will sleep on it and see how he is tomorrow

I doubt he would let the vet do anything without sedating him. He let me look but not touch.

Thanks for your advice. How long did it take to heal? I might put some purple spray on it tomorrow and see how it goes.

Purple spray in all likelihood will send your dog into orbit.
I clip them in the clinic, pop a muzzle on the dog just in case spray on local get robust vet nurse to use canine cuddle and the clip loose bit. I find these heal much quicker than this left to flap and wobble. They often need antibiotics if the pink - quick is exposed as this is very susceptible to infection and once established nail bed infections can be difficult to clear and in rare cases require toe amputation.

Thanks lonecat. Those were my feelings about the pink bit. It looks so vulnerable. And the thought of the loose bit catching on all the long grass. Vet it is then. I forgot to bring the purple spray home from the stables. Just as well!

Been to vet. Largely because he was licking his paw and whimpering at the same time Sad. She clipped off the split nail and gave him an anti inflammatory. Told me to keep it clean and dry. Yeah right! He was a very god boy and seems happier - despite puking his tea all over the rug
