Soft pads?

My dog is a collie/springer and just over a year old. He's ripped his pad quite badly - needed 14 stitches, and is currently on house arrest (which is driving him crazy mad). It's the second time this has happened, although to a different foot. Does anyone have any ideas of what would toughen his pads?
He's a farm dog - won't call him working as he has no usable skills! Most of his fast running is in arable fields, he spends a lot of time in the wood if he can, although much more time in the tarmac/stone yard where he runs around doing stuff, but not at high speeds. Would running him on tarmac help? The builder suggested methylated spirits? The vets didn't suggest anything other than keeping him on a lead :-/. Can anyone help?

Hmmm, any chance you can do a half hour road walk every day or so?

I know hikers who use rubbing alcohol or friars balsalm to toughen up their feet. Not sure if these would be safe to use on dogs but might be worth a look.
