our ebt absolutely looooves his ball but WON'T let go!! We got him when he was 10 months old so didn't do initial training with him, recall is good, he's a gorgeous loving boy but will not let go, it,s a total pain wrestling a slobbery, slimey ball out of his gob!

Clicker training, immediately he drops click and treat you'll have it sorted in no time. Only problem that can happen is he will focus on the treats and begin to ignore the ball but it worked for us :)

Have 2 balls - identical if poss - and only throw the second one after he drops the first. You can then retrieve the dropped ball with less chance of him grabbing it at the same time.

Worked a treat for our ball obsessed GSD.

Hi multitask
I've got clickers only problem being that he'll hold on to his ball forever and never let go Smile

agree with mrszoidberg. when our staffie was younger we had to have two balls with us on every walk. we used the ones on a rope and it became part of the game. of course sometimes he managed to get both of them in his mouth at once........

show him food, when he drops the ball to take the food, click, give food.

ziggystarrust · 13/04/2013 18:15

we do take two balls, he'll keep one in his mouth, chase the other one and when he reaches it he lies on it!!

Does he happily carry on the walk with the ball in his mouth?

idirdog · 13/04/2013 18:28

What happens if you hold a really smelly treat right up close to his nose whilst he is holding the ball?

idirdog · 13/04/2013 18:30

If he drops the ball when you do hold the treat - do not go to pick up the ball let him eat the treat and then pick up the ball again. You want him to be relaxed around you and the ball and not think that he has to grab for the ball.

I made liver cake treats which he goes mad for especially for the ball situation but all he does when we hold the treat to his nose is slobber!
