How can I stop new puppy from napping in evening so perhaps she'll sleep at night?

Okay, wakeful crying-at-night puppy is seriously tired out during the day. I know they are meant to sleep a lot but whenever she has had the chance today she's snuck off to her basket or someone's lap to have a sleep. I only wish I could have been so lucky!!! Obviously all her night distress is upsetting her sleep routines.

Will it help this evening to try and keep her awake, I feel ever so cruel ignoring those drooping eyelids and just like a sleepy baby it is really hard to keep her awake. Plus I am really dreading the night ahead and now I have work tomorrow for the first time and do actually need to make some sense. A midwife once told me never wake a sleeping baby but if I don't I'm pretty sure either will be bad news later on. Or it might be anyhow and I will have exhausted myself even further for no reward!!

Why is she waking in the night?

Puppy's sleep a lot ,I doubt if how much she sleeps during the day affects how she sleeps at night ,it certainly never did with mine .

Perhaps try and work out what is making her cry at night. How old is she? It seems most likely it's loneliness? Dogs, especially puppies, need loads of sleep. Puppies are like newborns, as soon as nothing else is happening they go to sleep. She will still need daytime sleep even when she sleeps all night. We had a fretful puppy who was missing his litter - as soon as we bought a huge stuffed dog (a dog toy) he was instantly fine

• something to snuggle up to! Keeping her awake during the evening won't solve the problem in my view.

how old is she?

She is 12 weeks old. I'm the OP from last night's thread about 3rd night with a new puppy if you want to catch up on background to this one. Yes it is absolutely separation from the litter. I might go and nab one of my DS soft toys from the toybox in his room now he's asleep. He won't give them up to he puppy even though he never uses them. She has fallen asleep in her basket now in the kitchen whilst I buzzed about in there doing stuff. So you wouldn't wake them at this stage for their night wee or a walk around to help tire them?

Took her out for a wee but she was having none of it. Have tried something different tonight, put her basket in kitchen whilst I cooked and tidied up and gave lots of praise and a treat or two for getting into it. After I've made a cuppa might drink it just outside the door before leaving her to it. Found a puppy-sized peppa pig that ds won attention fair and has never played with and tucked it in with her and a heat pad underneath. I don't think I could make her any cosier so I hope tonight will be a better night. She doesntseem to like her crate at all so it is basket in the kitchen as our way forward.

How did it go?

I must admit, I slept downstairs with our pup for the first couple of nights just in case he felt separation but he seemed to be fine, and night 3 I was back in my own bed.

Well she was quiet for about 45 mins and just as I was dropping off the crying started up and was on and off for the night again. So am trying a ticking clock tonight, the main problem being she probably won't be able to hear it over the noise she is making!! I am a bit delirious with sleep deprivation now and dropped off twice slightly whilst reading the bedtime stories tonight. And there is still dinner to make, another meal for her and a tiring-out play before putting her down for the night. At some point this must improve I am trying to think positively about it because today I've felt really down.

We slept downstairs with our puppy. Well dh did who copes well without sleep. That said, it only took 3/4 nights. He moved a bit further away each night and then left his bedding downstairs for another few nights.

Puppy was crated and didn't really need the loo much at night so we were lucky. Took the crate training seriously and made it a really pleasurable experience for him.

It's tough the first bit, you have my sympathy. It's so worth it though and our dog is a little dream who were all.I couldn't ask for a more lovely dog with such a placid nature. Dd had him in the garden today trying to do jumps like her pony!!! Very low ones I might add.

Why lie awake listening to her misery? Take her to bed with you. She will let you know if she needs to go out and be housetrained very quickly. Also, she will love you very much.

Well she has been up all evening rushing about like a mad thing and chewing whatever she can get her teeth around behind my back. So she should definitely be worn out. Have had to cuddle up with her on my lap to calm her down. Portrait we made the decision we didn't want the dog in the bed or our bedroom. We did try out of desperation the other night and she was very restless and weed and pooed and didn't settle. She has a ticking clock kindly provided by my mum. Needastrongone thanks I have read quite a few of your threads it definitely helps to know everyone goes through some tricky times.
