Saluki with matted ears??

I have a very nervous saluki cross who has developed some matts in his long ears and I dont know how to get them out. Im pretty sure only clippers will do the job but he doesnt like the noise and being his ears it must be even worse!

I have thought about taking him to a groomers but like I said he is very nervous of people and I don't think he'll let them near him!

Any ideas what else I could try, I have seen on a couple of dog grooming forums that you can get natural sedatives for dogs but that doesnt sound safe????

I have a Saluki cross and she has this problem occasionally. I use a stripping comb to gently cut the matted bits out. She doesn't like it much but there's no drama.

Thanks will have to see if i can get my hands on one of those at the weekend then!
