Tramadol

I posted on here a couple of weeks ago about my mums JRT x Border who has injured his cruciate ligament , he was originally given loxicam but he is unable to tolerate it so the vet has suggested Tramadol . Has anyone any experience with this and dogs ?

Yes, my boy has been on Tramadol for a few years now (following ops for cruciate disease). He's been fine on it. My girl was given Loxicam but was sick so she went on to something else. Tramadol you can give with or without food; Loxicam had to be given with food. My boy is also on Onsior and Gabapentin. Prior to Onsior he was on Previcox which made him sick. Because dogs are all different I think you just have to try the different meds to see what suits them. Good luck!

Tram afoul has no animal licence however it is widely used in dogs. My practice prescribed around 600 50mg caps a month. Very good pain control and minimal side effects.

Thanks that's all useful to know ,he's on cage rest at the moment to see if that will deal with it ,hopefully it will work as he's not good with anaesthetics either and we are keen to avoid surgery .

We used tramadol in conjunction with diazepam for bone pain when Tallie was diagnosed with cancer. It was very effective at controlling pain and relaxing her esp towards the end. She had 50mg three times daily with 5mg diazepam at the same time

My dog must be the exception - she died recently - a greyhound but was on Tramadol few years ago after removal of a tumour and a rib and she was very poorly on it - she didn't sleep and walked around the house day and night breathing heavily - vet said it was shock from the operation but a different vet luckily said she was having a bad reaction to the tramadol and she had to be sedated to withdraw from it - vet explained that greyhounds are sensitive to certain drugs that are ok for other dogs - something to do with high number of red blood cells or similar
