Double-coated dogs & Furminators. Good idea?

We have a gorgeous 18 month old Eurasier, and I am starting to wonder if I should change her grooming routine.
I usually use a general brush, along with an undercoat rake and slicker brush to finish off. She was spayed in December, and I reckon her whole coat is getting even thicker. I was thinking of trying a Furminator, but have been a bit put off by some of the things I have read about people filling entire bin-bags with hair! Does it just remove loose, ready-to-shed hair, or is it really judicious shaving? I don't want to damage her top coat, as it really helps the rain run off, and she dries out quickly! Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

I don't how you approach dealing with the coat of your dog to be honest. But I googled about using them on my Border Terrier.

I read that they shouldn't be used on BT's as they are part rake and part cutting blade. With my dog I need to strip the top coat and leave the undercoat so I am going with a stripping knife.

I had rough collies which also have a big double coat, and I think I'd stick to a high quality hair brush - I used a mason pearson (expensive but I've had the same one since 1998!) brush and a good quality comb (esp one with wiggly teeth as it helps you get through any knots) and some good quality detangler -look online for dog grooming supplies as that is usually the more heavy duty stuff - as I think a furminator may be more likely to damage the coat - my inlaws have one for their labrador and I felt it would probably pull too much on a bigger coated breed.

I think that the Furminator is a little too harsh for some coats. I prefer to use a shedding blade (metal loop with serrated edge) on really thick coats. Used gently they don't do much if any damage at all, just remove the shedding hair. Another great implement for removing excess hair is a Zoom Groom which is made of rubber.
I used to groom dogs many years ago and your routine sounds great.
