What to do with stray dogs?

2 dogs wandered into our garden yesterday. One is a greyhound, not in great condition and very nervous. The other is a staffie, very happy and friendly.we already have 3 dogs, 2 boxers and a rescue. I work part time also and have 4 kids and there is no way I can take on 2 more dogs.

I have contacted the police to report them as lost and also the local dog wardens and 2 local rescues. The local rescues have said they cannot take them as they are full. The warden will take them and hold them for 1 week to see if they are claimed. They say that they will then send them to a charity for adoption and will only PTS on vet's advice but the rescues have said not to give them to the warden as they will be put to sleep.
I can keep them until the Easter weekend but we are going on holidays then and there is no way we can take 5 dogs with us. Anyway I cannot keep them long term.
I will take them to the vet to see if they are chipped but has anyone any other ideas on where to go from here?
I am in Ireland if that is relevant.

if you are on facebook there is a dogs lost orginisation who are very good at posting info on dogs lost and found they seem to be good at reuniting,owners, it sounds being as these two turned up as a pair that they have escaped from someones garden, also let local rescues all of them know that you have the dogs if someone has reported them missing they may be on thier lost dogs lists , put notices up in local vets and shops saying dogs found but not details of what the dogs are with just your phone number

I don't know what to suggest

Gem, which county are you in? I may be able to contact an Irish greyhound rescue contact to see if they can suggest a specialist greyhound rescue place. They may also be able to suggest somewhere to try for the staffie.

Thanks for all the advice. I think I have made some progress in that the third rescue I contacted got back to me last night and said they would take them but the manager, who was to get back to me, has done so as yet. Fingers crossed they will be in touch soon.

Does anyone know which story re the pound is true. All the rescues insist that they PTS but the pound says they don't.

Gem, I do a lot of rescue volunteering, especially with greys. What we know about the Irish pounds is that sadly welfare standards are not as good as the UK, and that PTS is a legal option after five days, not seven as it is in the UK. Generally, because Irish pounds have little contact with rescues, unlike in the UK, once a dog enters an Irish pound, it is virtually a death sentence, which is why the rescues are advising you not to let the dog go there. Because I don't know the Irish situation as well as the UK, I can't advise you further.

OK, I'll still contact my friend - she might be able to suggest a couple of places that could be suitable.

Thanks again. I've been reading a bit more and I think the pound won't rehome a "dangerous" breed so that may not be good news for the lovely little staffie. Keep fingers crossed the rescue will follow through on it's promise.

Gem, just been speaking to one of my lovely Irish greyhound friends. She recommends Cottage Rescue in Cashel - prob about an hour away & have a great reputation, so might be worth a try - their number is 087 9701919.
