Smelly puppy - mange?

My mum's just rescued a puppy.

He's a poor little thing, he had a belly full of worms and is quite thin. And he stinks! His fur is quite patchy in places, but lovely on his head, ears and legs.

He's off to the vets tomorrow for his injections, but in the meantime, any idea what it could be? His skin is a little bit dandruffy but doesn't look sore.

The smell is quite a nasty, pungent sour smell - could it be mange? We bathed him but he's still a little stinker :)

Where did she rescue him from - not a reputable rescue?

Take the poor thing to the vets. any reputable rescue would not have allowed him home in this state!

The vet may want to take some skin scrapings to check for mange but a heavy flea infestation can cause hair loss.
Wet a piece of A4 white paper, hold puppy over or near it and ruffle the coat the wrong way so any debris lands on the paper. Fleas dirts are dried blood and will streak out red on contact with the water.

How did you get on at the vet? What did they say about the smell? I hope the puppy is better soon.
