Dog shaking head at night - ideas?

My springer dog is shaking her head at night like something is irritating her. She also drags her head on our carpet. The vet has put her under to investigate and found nothing.
I changed her food as someone suggested it could be an allergy.
Has anyone else experienced this? The vet is talking about a full body scan :(

Is it an ear infection? Or could she have gone deaf? If the vet didn't check those already, I would ask them to check that before arranging a scan. Apart from that I've no idea but hopefully someone else will know. Sorry to hear that your lovely dog has this and hope you can resolve it soon.

I would assume that the vet will have checked for ear mites? how do her ears look? any redness? bad smell? full body scan? what for??

The vet has been good. The reason they put her under was so they could check behind her ear drums. Ears look fine inside and out. She's had anti biotics and ear drops just in case.
I think the scan will be to check for tumours in her head. I just can't believe it's that as she is so fit, healthy and happy. She is only 3.

I'm sorry to hear that. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it comes back clear. I'm glad you have a good vet; it sounds like they are being very thorough. Let us know how she gets on.

Thank you Redwing. I'm a bit sad she has to be put under again. Hopefully it will be nothing sinister.

Our boxer does this...but he has a yeast allergy & even when it's kept well on top of, his ears sometimes irritate him (mainly at night) & he starts flapping about like crazy. Sounds like you're already having her ears thoroughly checked. Have you tried diet?

Doogle2 · 11/03/2013 22:07

Boy - this is exactly what she does. What do you feed your boxer please so I can try it!

After extensive trial & error we discovered the only thing that doesn't upset his ears = Fish4Dogs. Which is annoying as pricey but we get it from Chemist Direct much cheaper. Does she have any skin issues on rest of her body?

Still18atheart · 11/03/2013 23:14

Is it when she's sleeping or awake?

Doogle2 · 12/03/2013 16:26

Thanks for the replys. We might give it a try. She shakes her head only at night.
