Just got a reminder in the post so having my annual pondering.

Why do dogs need annual boosters when people don't?

Are they really necessary?

At the moment parvo virus is rife in unvaccinated dogs in our area, it can kill dogs quickly if they get it, so I would say they are necessary. No idea why people dont need annual boosters though!

Now I'm old I get an annual flu jab.

As far as I'm aware, it's only leptospirosis that needs to be done annually, parvovirus, distemper and adenovirus are usually done every three years now.

Most diseases are only boosted every third year. Lepto is the exception, and it needs annual boosters because it's a rubbish vaccine. It's also an environmental disease, not one they pick up from other dogs, so particularly important for dogs allowed off lead.

Our dogs are vaccinated annually, but as others have said, most diseases are only boosted every third year and your vet will record on the vaccination card exactly what has been given each time. Our foster dogs have sadly all arrived with no idea of what vaccinations they've had, so have all had a big booster on arrival. We also have a parvo outbreak locally so whilst I sympathise with people who are opposed to vaccination, I believe it's a mistake not to keep your dogs safe. Same as children really

It's really odd, but I have two dogs who are five and four. They both regularly go to the vets for various ailments, but no vet has ever suggested any annual or three yearly jabs for either of them. They had all their vaccinations when puppies, and this present vet isn't the only one they've been to.

beachy if you came to my practice we would not usually push you about vaccination. Some people perceive vets to be selling aggressively when they simply make a recommendation. You would probably be asked about vaccination when we registered you, but other than that we're unlikely to push more. Another practice might put a lot of pressure on you to do it, it varies widely.
