My puppy has eaten a whole bunch of grapes

and is now at the vets on a drip for 24-48 hours. God I'm so stupid, they were in a fruit bowl on the kitchen table. I was only out of the house for an hour and in that time she ripped up her bed, emptied the bin, jumped up onto the kitchen table and ate the grapes and some apples out of the fruit bowl!

I really should have thought about the fruit bowl, but it just didn't occur to me. The vet said she'll be fine but they gave her an injection to make her sick and with the amount she'd eaten they said she'd have to stay in on a drip, flushing out her kidneys.

As a general rule she does take naughtiness to a whole new level but this is my fault as I should have anticipated it with her!

How big a pup is she to get up onto the table?

Sorry she is feeling really rough, dogs are dreadful bloody thieves sometimes.

My old Border Collie got my mum's cat to help her steal food- most memorably half a tier of my wedding cake which was wrapped up in foil in the top of my mum's wardrobe. Dog opened the door for him to climb up and push it onto the floor where she unwrapped it. She ate it so quickly she brought it straight back up, but she felt really poorly for a couple of days. She was 9 years old and nt a puppy!

Hope yours has learned her lesson and is feeling better soon.

The late BlackDog made a desperate bid for early death by eating 3/4 of a "Finest rich fruit Christmas cake" a couple of years ago (while in DM's care I should point out )
As she had the digestive system of a rhinocerous it had scant effect on her but was a pricey mistake and one that DM never made again :o

Thanks, she's a boxer x (mum a boxer x, dad unknown), but she looks like a border terrier on v long legs! She's just a v good jumper and extremely naughty.

I know she's not stressed when I leave the house, (our other dog used to have separation anxiety and it was really obvious), she's just a little devil who gets up to whatever mischief she can. Have now ordered a crate for her as she relentlessly chews up her bed, bedding, kongs are destroyed, the fridge has been stripped of the DCs pictures, bin emptied, anything left on the worktop is pinched and chewed up and she's now started on the skirting board and also the wall beneath the cat flap where there was a loose bit of plaster . She's adorable, everyone who meets her is enchanted by her, but she's REALLY hard work.

Oh blimey, sounds like you've got your work cut out!

My dog doesn't chew anything, and when alone will just lie quietly on his bed. But if we're in the room with him, he'll find something to steal then have you chase him round the room like an idiot to get it off him, hes mental!

Oh jim, I'm feeling envious of your easy dog!

Our pug (1st dog) is very easy and gave me a false sense of security about getting her a new puppy friend. She'll wish she hadn't though as the vet made her sick too but, predictably, she'd been good and not touched the grapes, the puppy had had the lot! The vet said she was "taking one for the team"

I was just going to suggest a crate but I see you've ordered one.

SmallDog cannot be trusted alone - he once ripped open a cherrystone filled heat pad and ate half the contents - that was a long (expensive night)
In fact, he did so many naughty things it became clear it wasn't safe to leav him free.

I felt awful using the crate (he's very rarely left for more that 2 hours) but DH pointed out that all he should be doing when we are out is sleeping and he just does that in his crate on lovely warm bedding.

BigDog (who has the run of the house cos she is a v good girl) chooses to lie next to the crate while we are out.

I know what you mean about a false sense of ssecurity - all our previous dogs were fine left in the house so this one was a shock to the system

Oh god hope your dog is ok! My lab is 2 and still has to be left in a crate! (you can imagine how much of my kitchen the crate takes up - labs are big dogs!) some dogs are just daft - I swear thats all there is to it lol we've tried every trick in the book - kongs, treat ball, toy rotation device thingy (she ate the device instead...) but she still gets bored after like half an hour of free rain of the kitchen.

Luckily she really likes her cage and gets in it of free will, we just leave the door open when we're home & she chews her bones n stufd in there :)

When you do get a crate don't shut him in straight away, let him get used to it first by leavin the door open n puttin kongs n other goodies in there (apologies if I'm teaching my grandma to suck eggs) :)

I know a number of people that freeze the dog's kong filled with kibble mixed with natural yoghurt - takes ages to get out apparently.

I didn't even know grapes were dangerous

many years ago (maybe a decade!) though I came back to the apocalypse of the fridge and two vomiting border collies who had literally opened the fridge and eaten everything in it, and the freezer - whole frozen yorkshire puddings had been consumed and then brought back up, whole.

It was a lesson, I can tell you. They had eaten the whole tub of margarine too from what I remember. They were both fine though

I freeze my dogs Kong but he's a power chewer and they still only last minutes ! If the crate doesn't work ( dog may not like it) have you got another safer room you can leave them in . My dog is shut in the hallway when we go out and also sleeps there overnight ,its quite large but provided people don't leave stuff lying about there's not a lot to damage .

My dog loves her crate. It's massive, and she lazes around in it half the day, often refusing to come out.

She's nearly five and had never been crated before, but it's only taken 3 weeks for her to go from hating it to loving it.

It helps that I've filled it with cushions, a sleeping bag and my old coat.....

Hi, she's all fine now, had a blood test yesterday and no problems so that's good! Can't wait for the crate to arrive though as I dread coming back to the house each time. Left her with a bone yesterday though and destruction was at a minimum.

She'll be fine in a crate, she's been in them before and is quite happy, I was just hoping to get away without one as it will be pretty big in the kitchen, ah well.

Ref Kongs - I've tried but she destroys it each time I leave her with one!!! Apparently there's a black Kong which is even stronger, so I need to try that, but I'm spending a fortune on her at the moment, with her destroying everything as soon as she gets it.

I've uploaded a picture of Esther if anyone's interested. Her nickname is Pest .

I'm not feeling v reassured though by Banger's post - it sounds like ours our kindred spirits, I just know she's not going to be one of those dogs who grows out of it

Hello Kitsmummy I sympathise with you. Our Gordon setter ended up on a drip (on my birthday) when he was a puppy after eating only 4 grapes. More shockingly, I had given them to him - had no idea that they could be toxic. As he grew taller (can get his snout on the table without even having to stand on tip-paws) I just stopped buying them cos' I couldn't take the risk. Fast forward 3 years to last Christmas and he was back on the drip after managing to steal the entire contents of a jar of mincemeat from my parents' bird table. Not a lot you can do about a lanky dog, with no morals and no sense! Glad your dog is well again.

We had a dog who ate 2lbs of strong blue cheese one christmas - with no ill effects, surprisingly. Our previous dog would eat hot curry completely unaffected too... unfortunately the one we have now seems to have a sensitive tum and can even be made ill by those dog chews that are meant to be good for the teeth. She has taken to raiding the compost bin and removing egg shells and eating discarded veg matter... I think that she might be dropping hints (she does like her veg).

My previous Springer ate a whole box of Guylian chocolates on Christmas Eve one year. Prompting a emergency dash to the shop to replace my Aunt's present!
He had no nasty after effects

My Collie cross ate a whole basket of chocolates, wrappers and all. Never saw any evidence of the wrappers. Maybe she unwrapped them all and hid the wrappers under her bed but then she was the stupidest dog ever. We once had to call out the coast guard and cliff rescue for her

Sounds like a crate is a good idea!

Our last Staffie ate ver large quantities of grapes that had fallen off our garden grapevine. At the time we didn't relise they were poisonous to dogs, and fortunatel they seemed to have no ill effects. He also ate a whole container of birds fat balls in one go - about 9, not even a squitter or burp!

Kits your dog looks lovely! And very guilty! My dog destroyed the standard size black kong eventually but we got a good few weeks out of it. Got him the really big black one and it's still intact. Makes me feel a bit bad though as his tongue isn't really long enough for it

I didn't know grapes,were bad for dogs. I gave a lab/cocker cross and, surprisingly, she wasn't a chewer. She does like to come wandering from the kitchen with a bag of crisps though .

Glad your dog is ok .
