We are going to get a gsd puppy soon and are v. excited. DH had always had dogs as family pets and mil had one of this pup's cousins but I'm a first time owner.

I'm just wondering if you would recommend me a good pet insurance provider. I think she'll come with four week's worth of Petplan from the breeder but after that I'll have to get something sorted. Is the Kennel Club insurance any good?

I've got tesco insurance for both my dog and cat, quite reasonable and easy to claim. MIL has tesco for her dog and has had hundreds of £s worth of tests this year, they authorised fine and very easy to claim she said.

The premiums do go up a lot with age though I've noticed with my cat.

PetPlan- good but very expensive
KC Healthcare- good, slightly cheaper but does not cover for life.

I have used both and they have paid out quickly and fairly. Also used Tesco for a while who were complete crap, cheap but quibbled over every little thing and took ages to pay out.

ATM we are using M&S. Not had a claim yet surprisingly so cannot say how good they are for that but the level of cover seems quite good, premiums seem reasonable for what you get and I have heard good reports from others about them.

Thanks very much. Will have a look into them. I think there is one that the vet mentions on their website. Would this mean that they liase quite easily when required or cynically that the vet is paid for flogging it? I think ease of claim would be the most important thing so will carry on with my research.

vets dont get any commision from companies, the ones they advertise are the ones they trust.
be very careful, a lot of policies (including tesco) are cheaper because they only offer cover for twelve months fr any one condition. So say your three year old dog gets diabetes and will need treatment for life, they only cover for twelve months after which ou are on your own. The more expensive policies will continue cover as long as you keep up the policy. Can be a real problem.

My bosses have used M and S for their labs, they have been brilliant, they sadly lost one last year to a brain tumour and there was no quibble over the £3000 bill. I have used direct line and protect your bubble, both have been great with me but i know my sister has had problems with protect your bubble.
