Dogs on beaches in France or Spain?

We're hoping to get a dog shortly, and had planned that all being well we would take him or her on holiday with us to Europe. We've found plenty of dog-friendly campsites, but we tend to spend a lot of time on beaches, and from what we can see most beaches in Spain and France don't allow dogs. Has anyone experience of this? It would make things quite difficult if he couldn't accompany us during the day so we would need to either leave him at home in kennels (which I''m really keen to avoid) or radically change what we do on holiday. Thanks.

The only country I have seen special beaches for dog owners is in Germany on their west coast, but can't remember the resort. You did have to pay. They had normal beaches, nudist beaches and dog beaches in that resort.

Thanks digerd - what do you do if you're a nudist dog owner? Just wondering if most areas in France / Spain have at least some beaches where dogs can go like the UK.

I can't remember seeing any on the beaches when I was there in Spain.
It was funny in Germany, as the nudist beach is open to any beach walker , and once I did it < in my bikini> but my eyes were trying to avert themselves from prominent and not so prominent bits. 2 in particular I can still see in my photographic memory - one male and one female. So didn't notice if there were dogs there < laughing embarrassed face>

Most beaches in the south of France/northern Spain don't allow dogs. Rightly so!
