Dog isn't well [sad]

Just got in from work to be told he's been bleeding from his bum. He's a very hairy collie so difficult to see what's going on but looks like its stopped. Just blood on his fur.

Apart from that he looks fine and has just eaten a big leftovers supper.

Can't be good though can it.

He's 13 and been getting skinny over the last couple of months. He tried to die 6 months ago but made a miraculous recovery. The vet suspected he had something nasty going on then.

Poor boy.

Does he seem in pain at all?

Oh yes. Vet in the morning.

He seems absolutely fine.

How the hell do you decide when it is time?

poor chap, but if he is happy in himself and eating well its not time. Maybe get him checked over, run some bloods and make sure he isn't in any pain that can't be controlled. Other than that i wouldn't be panicking, has he been constipated at all?

He was a bit loose yesterday. Suspiciously dark loose. I thought then something was going on.
He's on a strong anti-inflamatory daily for his stiff and dodgy back legs. Previcox or something.

Sorry to hear this. Was his poo black yesterday? If so sounds like gastric irritation maybe due to the anti inflammatory. Though in humans does not normally cause blood from bum. Hope it all goes well in the morning

he might just have a gastroenteritis, lots of dogs get bloody poo with this - it not time to panic. Give your vet a call in the morning, see what it says.

My mum was passing lots of blood, as you can imagine, we all panicked, colonoscopy performed, turned out to be internal piles

I'm so sorry your boy is not well.

I had to post as it sounds like you are having the exact problems I have had with my boy. He's always had sensitive guts but the anti-inflammatory they prescribed him (Trecoyxcil?) caused him to progressively bleed (to the point of needing a transfusion early in the new year).

I posted a thread on here which you can find with a search.

My boy is also 13 and I thought it was game over. This had been going on progressively since November (the anti-inflammatory was being given once a month and was killing his insides).

Do you know how long he's been bleeding for? Are his gums and tongue paler? Energy okay? Apart from the bloody poo, I noticed his energy was gradually flagging (due to losing the blood).

If the bleeding is recent, I honestly think there's every chance you can turn it around, but I suspect you need to get the anti-inflammatory out of his system. (Ours took around a month).

We still have bad days but with antacid (omeprazole), stomach protector (antepsin) and very careful diet he is now acting like a 2 year old, unbelievable!

Another recommendation from Behindlock was to buy Tree Barks Powder from Dorwest Herbs - it's really helped settle his stomach.

Sorry if this is overload but I just wanted to let you know that it's not helpless at this point, and to share my dog's experience with you as it may help.

He's fine this morning. Eating like a horse.

Cat on the other hand hasn't eaten since wednesday.

Oh Taggie, so sorry, it's such a worry...

Has he been bleeding long?

I do think it might be the anti-inflammatory if it's a strong one, although obviously can't be sure.

If he's not been bleeding long you can sort it I'm sure.

Having said the above, the "normal" red blood count range is around 40-46 and my dog's dropped to 15 at its worst. So they really can turn around from what seems like a hopeless situation - even at 13 Smile

He's old and knackered. The painkillers have kept him happy and ticking along for the last few months. Without them he gets weak and wobbly and can't stand.

I don't want to make decisions about heroic treatments.

Vet thinks msybe an abscess or maybe a sinustrr nasty.

Got antibiotics and go back next week. Dig wouldn't let him prod too much and he didn't want to sedate him.
If it gets worse need to take him back sooner but hopefully antibiotics will cure the soreness so vet can get a good look next week.
