Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound).

I didn?t really want you,
I wasn?t really sure,
And I?ll admit I had my doubts,
When you first came through that door.

Not small, or cute, or fluffy,
With big, soft puppy eyes,
But tall, and thin, and bony,
With bald, pink, bulging thighs.

You weren?t the kind I had in mind,
Not in any way,
?Perhaps it would be better if I took you back today,
Before we know each other,
It really won?t be kind,
To keep you here for one more day,
And then to change my mind.?

But against my better judgement, I decided you could stay,
And quickly I discovered you were kind in every way,
Your gentleness and patience, they really stole the show,
?Why these dogs are wonderful, I must let others know!?

For you?re my gentle giant,
Who just needed the chance,
To show us all what you could be,
To wipe away that history,
And dispel our preconceptions, which put us all to shame,
And so we come to know and love,
What lies beneath that frame.

And now I?ve come to understand,
What I missed right at the start,
That greyhounds need that great deep chest,
To house their great big hearts!

It was hilarious MrSlant - poor dog keeps wanting to play, and ginger just gives him a look of 'you and the horse you rode in on'. Last week dog was entertaining himself by rolling a ball down the stairs so he could run after it when ginger decided to sit half way down the stairs. Of course the ball eventually lodged behind him, and dog didn't dare get it back. Smug cat activated.

Lovely walk in Peckham rye where we chanced upon Hugh leach who recited a poem to us about a lurcher:
'An' a lurcher wise as Solomon an' lean as fiddle-strings
Was joggin' in the dust along 'is roundabouts and swings.' (Patrick Chalmers)
Paddy very sweetly leant against him whilst he spoke. Just wonderful

Not an every day occurrence but reminds me why our dogs are so special

I'm hoping I might get to meet CMot's recent addition....

We happened to get ours just before LL had a rebuild of their barn - necessitating all the other dogs that had been in there being found foster homes - I thought long and hard about suggesting that we might foster the other dog that had been held with ours in a pen - they looked a really well matched pair in terms of looks and clearly liked each other. However, I decided at the time that it wasn't fair on ours if we wanted her to settle down as a potential single dog - and that it might make the housetraining even more difficult. I'm glad to say he's been adopted by the person that did take him in, and we see him most months which is nice - and ours greets him very nicely.

Mistlehound got so muddy (and lets be honest, muddy from the stagnant ends of lakes) that she had to have a bath yesterday.... she does become extra soft when she's had one. I'm finding that she's already started to shed significantly - our zoom groom is getting drifts out of her, on the short haired bits too.

I'm hoping to see you tomorrow too Mistle! Did you get my message?

That sounds nice you two. Are you having a get-together/hound playdate for half term?

I've got a big day tomorrow. Down to Carmarthen in the morning with a group of other rescue volunteers to meet Welsh Govt civil servants to discuss concerns over new Control of Dogs Bill. And then tomorrow evening I and a friend are going to see Mary Ray at Cwmbran Leisure Centre. Should inspire me with my clicker work.

I'm hoping to meet CMot's hound tomorrow - but we (ds and I) have left her with DH - we're travelling and don't want to be leaving her in the car etc etc...

DS is now blissfully asleep and I'm quietly MNetting on a dial up in the almost dark....

Scuttlebutter · 18/02/2013 22:12

Ooh, dialup, that's very retro Grin

Report
mistlethrush · 18/02/2013 22:31

Yes, very retro.... but a lot cheaper than the alternative available via the hotel..... Luckily MN works pretty well on it.

CMot or I will update you on which gets the muddiest - her hound or one of our two boys tomorrow!!! Grin

And our survey said: the boys got most muddy. Absolutely plastered! Cmotdog had a lovely time though, even if it was all on the lead

Ahhhh, how lovely to have a meet up.

We've just come back from a lovely long walk on which we met a greyhound x staffie lurcher, which my two liked very much and a spaniel, which they didn't....

When we first got Jessie though she did not really know about going out for walks and was all a bit confused by the whole thing - she'd just plod along at the side of us not knowing what to do. Now, she is infuriating as she stops very few seconds to sniff literally everything so progress is very, very slow. Her recall is awful when outside the house, so she doesn't get let off the lead on 'normal' walks, only when we are somewhere secure, which means dragging her along. still, all that mental stimulation for such a lovely but intellectually challenged dog means she is very tired now.

Dp has seen a black whippy x bitch at our local RSPCA - thankfully she is frightened of black dogs, otherwise I strongly suspect he might be trying to convince of the need to give her a home.

I had a whole day at work today (very unusual in the present financial climate), as always dog sitting took priority over child sitting and it was worth it when whippey was soooooo excited to see me when I got home, made me realise how little time we spend away from each other. He really needs a friend, I think he thinks he's my actual baby Blush.

How lovely that there was a cushion mini meet, I really enjoyed mine last year. CMOT I am seriously considering getting a cat just to see the look of superiority on it's face Wink.

It was lovely to meet up with CMot and Dibblerdog (who was lovely).

And the boys did indeed get significantly muddier than he did.

And the boys managed to get along amazingly well given how similiar they appear to be in character (strong willed and VERY talkative!!!)

Unfortunately mistlehound wasn't with us - otherwise I think the two dogs would have been really happy doing large circles together... Perhaps next time!! Grin

Perhaps a MN pointy meet at the GGG later this year?

That sounds like a plan Magrat - 15th Sept in Nottingham.

Mistle and I were also talking abput maybe going to the LL show and coursing weekend at Peterborough in October

Goodness me I just applied for my first rescue! Scruples linked to her on FB as if they had heard us talking about what would be ideal for our family and there she was at breakfast! I know we are unlikely to get her but applying for our first real dog is a bit exciting!

That is all, I am a little too excited to think about anything other that having two beautiful hounds to play with Grin if not her there will be one for us.

That's so cool, MrSlant. Which one is she? (Nosy).

Very excited for you.

Report
MrSlant · 20/02/2013 14:11

Milly, she was linked to another rescue on FB but after I called and checked she was ok with children and filled in the form the called me back and I was on the phone to my mum and so someone else has reserved her. To say I am fed up and pissed off is an understatement, and I never phone my mum, we aren't exactly friends I just thought it would be nice of me. I am not never being nice ever again.

What, actually, are you looking for - does it have to be a pb whippet or are you looking for something pointy that won't be too big?

Report
MagratGarlik · 20/02/2013 14:19

you can take my grippet if you like... She has piddled next to the front door again.... (sigh).

It's not as though they don't get enough walks and she refuses to pee in the garden, apparently the carpet near the front door being preferable Hmm.

Disclaimer: we love her really.

What about Suki - she looks lovely.

Report
MrSlant · 20/02/2013 14:32

DH is adamant that we can only have another whippet, I would take anything pointy up to and including a deerhound Wink. Anyway, there is time yet, I was amazed that the perfect sounding dog was out there for us but if there was one there will be another. Is Suzi the black and white 4 year old (memory getting fuzzy through looking at 5,000 rescue sites since morning?) if so I think she looks lovely. Although not being house trained might be hard work with an older dog, I will show DH when he gets in.

That's the one. She's being fostered in Cardiff apparently.

My experience (from looking recently) is that, if they hit the proper website you've left it too late - you need to be home checked and on the appropriate forum that has 'will be coming soon' and 'look what just came in' and 'can anyone temporarily foster' etc. I am sure that the right dog will turn up for you, even if this one was not meant to be....

Already got someone interested apparently but if I send an email they will consider us as to who is more suitable. Hmm So why didn't the first place do that then? I'm going to get confused if it's half 'first come, first served' and half being judged. I have to leave this for today, I'm already cross because of humans being confusing, no need to add more of them to my list. Just enough time for snuggles with my whippet before the mad hordes come home.
