Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound).

I didn?t really want you,
I wasn?t really sure,
And I?ll admit I had my doubts,
When you first came through that door.

Not small, or cute, or fluffy,
With big, soft puppy eyes,
But tall, and thin, and bony,
With bald, pink, bulging thighs.

You weren?t the kind I had in mind,
Not in any way,
?Perhaps it would be better if I took you back today,
Before we know each other,
It really won?t be kind,
To keep you here for one more day,
And then to change my mind.?

But against my better judgement, I decided you could stay,
And quickly I discovered you were kind in every way,
Your gentleness and patience, they really stole the show,
?Why these dogs are wonderful, I must let others know!?

For you?re my gentle giant,
Who just needed the chance,
To show us all what you could be,
To wipe away that history,
And dispel our preconceptions, which put us all to shame,
And so we come to know and love,
What lies beneath that frame.

And now I?ve come to understand,
What I missed right at the start,
That greyhounds need that great deep chest,
To house their great big hearts!

Black pointies are definitely best (closely followed by stripy ones) - not that I'm biased. There is an abundance of black pointies on the cushion Smile.

moosemama · 05/05/2013 22:49

Good to hear Magrat

Perhaps we need a black one to go with our stripey boy, so then we'd have the best of both worlds. Grin

TheCunnyFunt · 05/05/2013 23:46

Yy to blacks :o LGT have a whole page dedicated to just the black Greyhounds they have in.

MagratGarlik · 05/05/2013 23:53

Ah, we already do have the best of both worlds Grin, as does Scuttle. Have you looked on the black beauties website (I can't find the link atm), which is dedicated to black pointies in rescue?

MagratGarlik · 05/05/2013 23:54

This one www.blackbeauties.org.uk/index.php

moosemama · 06/05/2013 00:19

Yes, thanks Magrat. I've seen that website. So far I've really just been scoping out who I will need to arrange home checks with when we're ready - but of course I can't help looking at all the dogs, which is daft, because hopefully many of them will have found their forever homes by the time we're ready to add a new member to our family.

MagratGarlik · 06/05/2013 00:26

I have to say, I think I've fallen in love with Misty

moosemama · 06/05/2013 13:26

Oh now she has a really sweet face Magrat.

I am sitting up in bed MNetting with the windows open, the sun streaming in and a lovely view of all the beautiful blossom that has finally appeared.

Resting today, as I have a seemingly unidentifiable neurological condition that reared it's ugly head in the small hours this morning. Feeling much better after a long rest though and it's not too bad if it means I get some quiet mnetting time up here while dh deals with the dcs.

Am looking forward to a quiet walk with lurcherboy later, although it will have to be the local park, rather than the fields today, so will have to wait until the footballers have finished. Fortunately the dcs want to stay home today, so we can have a peaceful walk instead of the usual weekend family-fest. Of course this is assuming dh lets me go on my own - he can be a touch over-protective when I've had one of 'me turns'. Grin Hmm

I have been reading back through the thread, trying to learn who everyone is and which pointydogs they share their lives with (not to mention loving all the photos on people's profiles). I must put one of lurcherboy up on mine. Problem is the dcs always seem to be in them too and I'm not one for putting photos of the dcs online. Will have a scope about and see if I can find a couple without mini-human interlopers.

I am also trying --unsuccessfully- to stop myself looking at any more rescue sites.

moosemama · 06/05/2013 13:43

Right, found a picture that I could crop - although if I'm honest it was me not the dcs in the frame on this one. Blush

Anyway, said picture is now up on profile if anyone is interested. Smile

MagratGarlik · 06/05/2013 13:52

Hope you are feeling better soon, Moose.

Lurcherboy is gorgeous. I'd love a hairy lurcher, but admit I quite like the relative lack of hair around the house from our two short haired doggies.

Scuttlebutter · 06/05/2013 14:05

Magrat, Misty is adorable. I love how she already likes sleeping next to her humans. I had Norty Minx snuggled up in bed with us last night - it's nice to wake up to a little stripy tiger in the bed. Smile

Moose, hope you are soon on the mend.

moosemama · 06/05/2013 14:10

Thank you, am feeling much better already. Smile

He does shed rather a lot, but a quick zoom groom once a week in the garden keeps the worst of it under control - I'm used to having double-coated shepherdy types, so the hairy tumbleweed is something I've just got used to over the years.

He actually looks lovelier when he hasn't been groomed, as he gets a lovely big old scruffy ruff round his neck and shoulders. It has to be done though - unless we want to be permanently ankle deep in blonde tumbleweed.

His beard-wiping antics are far more annoying. After every meal and/or drink - first choice the sofa cushions. Hmm Failing that a good scoot chin-first across the living room carpet and if he's stopped from doing that? Well of course my trouser legs will have to do. Hmm Grin

Unfortunately, I am a sucker for a beardy dog-face, ever since I had my wheaten I just can't resist them.

He also waits until just after I've vacuumed to decide to have a good old back-scratch on the living room carpet - every blooming time! Hmm

It's a good job I love him. Grin

YourHandInMyHand · 06/05/2013 17:37

Hi all Smile

ShyDog is settling in well, her season seems to be coming to an end, and she's getting less shy of DS. After sleeping very well in the kitchen on a night she suddenly decided she couldn't be without me. After 2 nights with me on the sofa I taught her yesterday how to "do" stairs. It should have been on krypton factor as one of the challenges. She wouldn't be led up or lured with treats. I had to stand behind her and place each paw one at a time! Hmm Grin

Moosemama hope you are feeling a little better today?

I'd love a VW camper van. Envy Used to have a mini until DS arrived and me and his dad decided to get a bigger car, still wish we had kept it! Mind you no way could I fit shydog in a mini! :-D

moosemama · 06/05/2013 19:33

Hi YourHand.

Well done with getting ShyDog up the stairs.

Apologies if I am teaching grandma to suck eggs, but did you know that if her bleeding is tailing off she's still in season for at least another two weeks. Info here.

I have been told that I am not walking lurcherboy today. Hmm Poor dog has had to wait all day while dh worked on the camper and isn't going after the dcs are in bed instead. I fully intend to make it up to him with an extra long walk tomorrow when dh isn't around to stop me. Wink

I am a bit worried though, because I've been invited out to lunch tomorrow and I haven't left him alone for longer than half an hour since we lost oldgirl. When we got back from the vet that day he'd literally covered the whole kitchen, bathroom and back-porch floors with slobber and was in a right old state. He was still drooling and panting for quite a while after we got back and only settled after we took him for a long walk. Sad

He's been ok with me leaving him for school runs, which take less than ten minutes and the one time I popped to the corner shop on the way back from the school (hence the half hour stretch) but I guess I wouldn't know if he'd been howling, because you can't hear him from the front of the house.

I'm hoping that if I take him in the morning and we do lots of training and retrieving he'll be knackered and just sleep while I'm out. Shouldn't be gone longer than an hour and half anyway, as I have to be back to pick up the dcs.

YourHandInMyHand · 06/05/2013 20:49

I was quite pleased with myself and her, we've done it 3 times now and she came down this morning slightly more relaxed. She's such a good girl bless her.

Oh yes I did know she's still technically in season, just pleased I won't be constantly mopping! Grin I have to admit though I only know from reading up, have always had spayed dogs/bitches so never had to know before.

How long will you be out for tomorrow? Would a nice juicy bone occupy him or will he be too anxious to enjoy it? My girl was very nervous when she first got here but she managed to clean a bone while we were out.

YourHandInMyHand · 06/05/2013 20:50

Oops sorry missed how long you'll be out for, ignore that question! I'm sure he'll be fine.

moosemama · 06/05/2013 21:03

I thought you'd probably know, but always think it's best to check. I didn't have a clue when I had my first bitch rescue years ago. We found her half dead under a hedge, took her in and nursed her back to health and that was that, I was hooked on dogs for life. Smile

Daft dog won't eat bones in the house for some reason. He takes them right up to the other end of the garden, acts all scared of them, circles them carefully whilst eyeing them up suspiciously then drags them off to the furthest top corner of the garden with his tail between his legs and eats them there. Hmm Grin

I'm sure he'll cope tomorrow. Just hope my neighbours are out in case he decides to serenade them!

mandypants39 · 07/05/2013 08:42

hi all im trying to put photos of my lurcher meia but for some reason nothing is happening is it just me am i doing something wrong

moosemama · 07/05/2013 10:50

You have to go into your profile - where it says 'my registration' at the top of the page under 'My Mumsnet'. Click 'my photos', then 'upload pictures. Select the picture you want off your computer, then select the size you want it to appear, followed by a caption if you want to put one and there is a box that asks if you want them to be private or visible to all mnetters.

That should do it. It is very slow though and can take ages to process. (While it's processing it may not look like it's doing much/anything.)

moosemama · 07/05/2013 10:53

Just exhausted lurcherboy with an hour and a half's walk and lots of ball chasing. Fingers crossed he'll still be exhausted come lunchtime.

Fortunately, it appears my neighbours have gone on holiday, so even if he does do his haunted howling he won't be bothering anyone else.

Wracking my brains trying to think of some way to record him while I'm out to see how well/if he settles and stays settled. I'm sure there must be some way to do it on the macbook, but I can't work it out. Hmm

LegoAcupuncture · 07/05/2013 10:55

New to the thread. Hope you don't mind me joining in.

We've got a new baby in the house, a 7 week old x lurcher girl. She is beautiful and so lovely.

She's got a great sense of smell, she can smell her treat in your pocket even from way down there Grin

MagratGarlik · 07/05/2013 13:09

Welcome, mandy and lego.

Pictures are of course obligatory Smile....

LegoAcupuncture · 07/05/2013 13:30

Have added picture now, hopefully my profile will be public.

LegoAcupuncture · 07/05/2013 13:32

Try again.

LegoAcupuncture · 07/05/2013 13:32
