Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound).

I didn?t really want you,
I wasn?t really sure,
And I?ll admit I had my doubts,
When you first came through that door.

Not small, or cute, or fluffy,
With big, soft puppy eyes,
But tall, and thin, and bony,
With bald, pink, bulging thighs.

You weren?t the kind I had in mind,
Not in any way,
?Perhaps it would be better if I took you back today,
Before we know each other,
It really won?t be kind,
To keep you here for one more day,
And then to change my mind.?

But against my better judgement, I decided you could stay,
And quickly I discovered you were kind in every way,
Your gentleness and patience, they really stole the show,
?Why these dogs are wonderful, I must let others know!?

For you?re my gentle giant,
Who just needed the chance,
To show us all what you could be,
To wipe away that history,
And dispel our preconceptions, which put us all to shame,
And so we come to know and love,
What lies beneath that frame.

And now I?ve come to understand,
What I missed right at the start,
That greyhounds need that great deep chest,
To house their great big hearts!

Thanks for the welcomes, she's been here for just about 2 years now and will be 8 this year.

YourHandInMyHand · 05/04/2013 16:47

Hi Jazz Smile

DS has said dog is like Jumpy Squirrel (from Curious George). She's still trying to hide her food in her flat bed, and even if the door to the garden is ajar she just points her nose at it until me or ds push it open a few more inches. Apparently she was the smart one of the litter! Hmm Grin I've brushed a shed load of fur off her and she's lived through the hoover being on. So far so good.

She has that awful kennel smell. Has anyone on here used those dial a dog wash type people that come to you??

mistlethrush · 05/04/2013 17:09

We couldn't cope with the kennel smell and put ours in the bath on evening 2. She didn't hate it as much as our previous dog, and has had another one since. We use the shower attachment with a gentle spray and warm water and a sensitive skin dog shampoo (if I'm not allergic to it when I've given them a bath, I don't think any dog will be!)

YourHandInMyHand · 05/04/2013 18:08

Hmm I don't trust our shower it's a bit too temperamental. Ok for me as I can jump away while I readjust it but can't exactly move/lift a big greyhound! Then there's the stairs....

CMOTDibbler · 05/04/2013 18:54

Yes, we've done dial a dog wash, and they were v good. Now he gets plonked in the bath on a Sunday night, but initially it was a lot easier and less stressful.

Cmotdog has had a blissful day of snoring in the sun, getting fussed by our cleaner, two dog biscuits from the postie, then a nice walk into town to get a new cow hoof and a biscuit from the pet stall lady.

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee · 05/04/2013 19:45

I rang one of those dog groomers that come to you and wash the dog in a van. They quoted £26 for a bath, claw clipping and ears cleaning out Shock I rang another place, just at someones house in their conservatory, £10. You can guess which one I went for!

Scuttlebutter · 06/04/2013 14:09

We have a very excited grey here - it's his birthday on Monday and a birthday card has arrived in the post for him. Smile We haven't opened it yet, but I think it might be from his brother, who lives in Lincolnshire. Grin We might also go really mad and treat him to some liver cake.

In fact, he's going to be having two lots of celebration cake. There'll be liver or something equally vile on Monday but it's also my birthday so I always make us a joint "proper" birthday cake - with candles. However, DNs are coming over for a dog show next weekend so I'll wait till then and do a cake for us all to enjoy, including the hounds. Smile

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee · 06/04/2013 18:41

Awww, me and FIL had a joint cake once, my 18th and his 50th, it was a book and my half was pink icing and sponge, and his half was blue icing and sponge. You could do a joint cake for you and Andy, a book, half liver cake and half sponge cake :o :o

YourHandInMyHand · 06/04/2013 19:27

Did someone say cake? Grin

3ismylot · 07/04/2013 11:26

Hi all just popping in to join you all as we got our new greyhound yesterday Grin
He is 18 months old and a failed racer due to breaking a toe as a puppy.

He is so sweet and great with the kids Smile just took him for a walk and he is amazing on the lead too x

He has just eaten breakfast and has taken up his space on the sofa for a snooze Grin

MagratGarlik · 07/04/2013 11:39

He sounds lovely, 3.

Pics please....

YourHandInMyHand · 07/04/2013 12:58

Aaw 3 he sounds lovely Smile. My girl is a similar age, 20 months.

Quick question - how long before I should worry about dog not eating?? Since she got here she's had the odd nibble, half the contents of a kong, a few mouthfuls. She's drinking but barely eating.

Scuttlebutter · 07/04/2013 17:06

At this stage I wouldn't worry at all. It's perfectly natural for the stress and upheaval of settling in to a new home to affect both appetite and it's results.

Don't fuss her - try her with a small bowl of mashed sardines, or maybe a few cubes of cheese, or we get those frozen packs of chicken breasts and poach them in the slow cooker in water, let them cool - these are perfect if any of them are under the weather or in need of a little extra tempting. If she is showing interest in any sorts of treats, nibbles, cheese etc, then all is well. I'd be waiting at least a couple more days though before being worried, especially as she is drinking. The other thing we find (not useful yet but will be in the summer) is that ours have significantly less appetite when the weather is hot, and often turn up their noses at meals or just have a desultory nibble. Once it cools down, they revert to their normal gannet mode. Grin

YourHandInMyHand · 07/04/2013 18:39

Thanks Scuttle.

On the advice here I'd gone out and bought some sardines yesterday. She left her morning meal but has eaten her tea (a mixture of a little scrambled egg, a little mashed pilchard, and a bit of kibble)!! Smile Smile So relieved she seems to be settling. Smile

I have to say she's been super despite being nervous - I'm extremely taken with her despite the smell. Grin

Maisiewhippet · 07/04/2013 21:00

Hi everyone, can I join you on the cushion? I live near Carmarthen in west Wales and have a 10month old whippet that a friend rescued. It was love at first sight even though she's nuts.Sleeps under my duvet!chucks toys everywhere, lacks any special awareness and launches herself everywhere but has learned to recall and the other basic commands. She really needs a companion to play with. When i take her to the beach she just looks around for dogs to race with and is so happy when she finds one.Ive registered with Scruples but is there anyone in this part of the country that rescues whippets or small greyhounds (under 24inches,got a small cottage!). Also, anyone in this part of the country that takes their dogs to LLanstephan beach?
Going to read all the pointy face stuff now, there is so much brilliant info on this site. Thanks.

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee · 07/04/2013 23:04

Yay 3is! How exciting, sounds like you love him to bits already :)

Welcome Maisie :) have a seat! Your Whippy sounds gorgeous, I'd live a Whippet one day. There are actually a few people on the cushion who live in Wales, 2 of whom have Whippets! Well, one is a 90% Whippy. Hopefully they'll be a long soon :)

Scuttle has discovered that as well as his brother, whose birthday is tomorrow! Sprocket is related to the Norty Minx and her sadly deceased boy! How amazing is that!?!

MrSlant · 07/04/2013 23:23

Busy weekend, amazing how much energy taking boys to a skate park can use up.

Maisie we can't be too far from you! I will inbox you.

Lovely reading everyone's news, especially excited at all the new dogs, will post more tomorrow.

Maisiewhippet · 07/04/2013 23:46

Wow,thank you for the welcome and quick response.Ube sent MrSlant a pm.Think it went! Better go and let the four legged thug in from her evening constitutional!

MagratGarlik · 08/04/2013 00:01

Welcome, Maisie good to see some more whippet slaves on the cushion.

I'm feeling kind of jealous of you ground owners though, that you can find out so much about your dogs past lives and family. We can only speculate (though given Jessie was salivating at two cats on our front earlier, we can assume she was worked).

3ismylot · 08/04/2013 07:39

Hi guys not sure how to put a pic up but will try later Smile he is a brindle so has some lovely markings x

He is settling in well, he had a bit of a cry and some door scratching last night when we went to bed but only lasted 10 mins and we got up to no accidents so all is good x
He is currently taking up 50% of the sofa and getting cuddled by dd who is 3 Grin

We checked his history last night, he never raced but comes from good stock, his grandad was one of the droopy racers
( For anyone who takes an interest in racing) and the charity has asked for updates and photos to send to the breeder as they like to know how all their dogs are doing.

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee · 08/04/2013 09:25

3is he sounds like he's settling in really well. Hooray! For no accidents overnight :)
I hope you don't think I'm being preachy, but do you know how to read his body language and understand when he's had enough? If not, this website is incredibly useful and simple to understand.

This is good too, I have these stuck to our fridge, mainly for DP who is a twit and would probably let DD (21mo) to use Sprocket as a climbing frame if she wanted to. Hmm

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee · 08/04/2013 09:28

Also on another note, the Droopys are a big family aren't they? How many offspring does his father have? Sprocket currently has 4427 siblings, his father was Brett Lee who is still producing puppies now even though he died over 2 years ago!
