Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound).

Jake
I didn?t really want you,
I wasn?t really sure,
And I?ll admit I had my doubts,
When you first came through that door.

Not small, or cute, or fluffy,
With big, soft puppy eyes,
But tall, and thin, and bony,
With bald, pink, bulging thighs.

You weren?t the kind I had in mind,
Not in any way,
?Perhaps it would be better if I took you back today,
Before we know each other,
It really won?t be kind,
To keep you here for one more day,
And then to change my mind.?

But against my better judgement, I decided you could stay,
And quickly I discovered you were kind in every way,
Your gentleness and patience, they really stole the show,
?Why these dogs are wonderful, I must let others know!?

For you?re my gentle giant,
Who just needed the chance,
To show us all what you could be,
To wipe away that history,
And dispel our preconceptions, which put us all to shame,
And so we come to know and love,
What lies beneath that frame.

And now I?ve come to understand,
What I missed right at the start,
That greyhounds need that great deep chest,
To house their great big hearts!

Mistle, how lovely that you were able to make your wedding dress. And so impressed at your collies tiptoeing round it.

Can't imagine any of ours doing that! I went to a dressmaker in Plymouth for mine. (Happy memories Smile).

Betsey, fantastic news about Billy, but not surprised about other owner. Sad Angry And how awful about your banking! What a palaver that must have been. Glad to have you back, and sending you a large virtual gin.

BehindLockNumberNine · 20/03/2013 18:14

Fab to hear Billy is back to normal. Have you reported the other dog owner to the dog warden? If he is not going to pay up and face up to what his dog did then at least he can have a visit from someone official to shake him up a bit!!

Angry on your behalf!

mistlethrush · 20/03/2013 19:09

Scuttle - my mother and I made it - I took my sewing machine down to their house and we sat either side of the dining room table sewing...

I ended up sewing the silk roses that I'd made from 3 different colours of silk (which matched the colours in my bouquet) on the back the night before as it was something I couldn't do at home (no dress) !!!

One of the collie crosses had a 'brides-dog' outfit specially made - a little bonnet and a frill... Only trouble is that the other dog would have attacked her because she was wearing it!!! Grin

Second the dog warden route.

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee · 20/03/2013 20:14

I know for a fact Sprocket would hve lain down on the material, he'd probably have dug it up and mashed it around a bit too :o

Betsey I'm so pleased to hear Billy is back to normal (besides the other dogs of course). Angry and :( at the other owner and your online banking. What a shite year we seem to be having so far!

:o :o :o at Scuttles hounds last night, they all sound like such clowns :)

DD never fails to amaze me. We had the dentist yesterday, and we got there and she pointed to the building over the road opposite to the dentist and said 'Crocket!' (Sprocket), the building over the road is the vets where we take Sprocket Shock she's 21 months old and she recognises the vets even though she's only been a couple of times!

mistlethrush · 20/03/2013 20:23

Tonight mistlehound went missing.... I tracked her down and found that she'd broken into the dining room - where she was eating the Chinchilla's food, having broken into the packet Hmm. I'm not sure its going to do her digestive system much good.

Scuttlebutter · 20/03/2013 20:57

Awww, love the brides dog idea. One of the nicest things about our wedding was that our two family dogs who we'd had since I was a teenager came along. Both were very elderly by that time, but to be honest, it mattered more that they were there than some of the humans! Am looking forward to seeing Sprocket strut his stuff at the event of the century next year. That's amazing about DD - she's so sharp. Smile

Further criminal activities have been taking place today. I went off to my quilt class this morning, leaving a wrapped parcel on the hall table. On my return, after a peaceful few hours with my quilt blocks, I came upstairs to check email on the PC. Heard mysterious chewing, cracking noises from the spare bedroom. Found Norty Minx lying on Andy's bed, looking hugely pleased with herself chewing the parcel. She had managed (though I am convinced Andy had some part in it) to get off all the outer brown paper and parcel tape, the cardboard box, and had chewed through the sturdy plastic boxes within to try to access the Peanut Butter dog treats within. Amazingly, she had been foiled by the plastic bag that was inside the box (I'll say this for the treats, they are very securely wrapped), though I suspect it was also down to my timing in coming home and interrupting her.

Impressed at the chinchilla food!

MissBetseyTrotwood · 20/03/2013 21:04

Arf @ mistlehound. Billy's partial to the guinea pig food too. His poos are terrifying afterwards.

We bumped into the dog warden on our walk the other day lock (walking 3 staffies on special leads that had 'I'M FRIENDLY! COME SAY HELLO!' woven all down them) and he was horrified but sadly unsurprised. Unfortunately, with the little information we have his hands are a bit tied. We have mobile number and email but that's it. We do have insurance details so there might be a bit of joy there I guess.

More sad news. Our friend's lovely Dog de Bordeaux X GSD bit into one of her asthma inhaler capsules the other day and is gravely ill in hospital with heart problems as a result. If she makes it through the night, she'll probably be OK apparently, so cross your fingers guys.

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee · 20/03/2013 21:13

Sprocket's partial to the rabbits food too, although he's never managed to get his paws on enough to affect his poo. Although speaking of poo, he terrified me yesterday, he went on his walk as normal, and as I put my hand around it to pick it up I felt painful pin pricks on my fingers underneath the poo! I started panicking thinking "Shit! What's he eaten? His insides will be shredded!!" then I noticed that the poo had moved, revealing the Holly leaf he'd pooed on top of and completely hidden Hmm

:( about your friends dog Betsey, fingers, paws and toes crossed here that she makes it! DDB x GSD, interesting mix, I'd like to see that!

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee · 20/03/2013 21:18

:o at Norty Minx and Andy! Was Andy distracting you by any chance while this was going on? I'm thinking it went like this :
Andy- "I'll let you use my bed, while I keep mum busy. She'll never think of looking there for you if I'm distracting her by demanding cuddles!"
NM- "Ok, then when I've managed to get into them, I'll woof for you and you can pretend you're tired, you come up to bed and we can share the spoils!"

MissBetseyTrotwood · 20/03/2013 21:23

She's beautiful Cunny. Very protective of the family though - they have to be very careful with her when men go over there! She loves me and Jas for some reason though - must sense the dog love. Billy, of course, avoids her until after she's done a couple of rounds of the marsh and she's happy to say a gentle hello!

Ha ha Norty Minx. She's a one.

mistlethrush · 21/03/2013 09:45

The other collie cross (who didn't like anything on her at any stage) was a terrible chewer. We got her on 23rd December (and went to the vets with her on the 24th and 26th Hmm) and she was shut in the kitchen when we went out to midnight mass on the 24th. The kitchen counter was taller than standard - but she managed to get up, unwrap the christmas presents that were in a basket, eat an apple from the fruit bowl, and sample an onion. Then she must have jumped up at the door and let herself out....

There were two particularly memorable events - the one where she found the liquid centre herbal sweets that I'd got for travelling and she'd managed to unwrap them and eat them - and the tube of savlon that was near them too - trying to get sticky gunge and savlon off her front paws was interesting and there was a distinct antiseptic smell that lingered on the landing for a while.

Another time she managed to break into the bathroom - where she ate three toothbrushes, a (new) tube of toothpaste, two bottles (full) of shampoo, one of conditioner, and just to top the oozing pool on the landing, a bottle of talc.

mistlehound will fetch shoes but hasn't chewed them at all.

Is anyone tempted to go to the show at Carnforth Hall in Derbyshire on Sunday - if so, what's going to be the secret MN sign... I don't have a mn scarf or a 'lentil weaver' shoulder bag...

Scuttlebutter · 21/03/2013 12:42

Erm, silly question I know, but what exactly is the MN scarf? Blush I keep hearing about it, but have yet to see it described.

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee · 21/03/2013 14:17

This is the MN scarf. It's a cheap copy of the real designer kind which are Very Expensive!

MissBetseyTrotwood · 21/03/2013 16:42

So Billy now has a patch of dry skin on his shoulder with a circular sort of red irritation underneath. His fur has fallen out around it. What fresh problem is this? Could he have caught it from our numerous vet trips recently?

Scuttlebutter · 21/03/2013 17:32

Thanks Cunny!

Scuttlebutter · 21/03/2013 17:36

Betsey, it sounds almost like a textbook case of ringworm?

MissBetseyTrotwood · 21/03/2013 21:48

Oh, boak. Poor Billy. We do Advocate - he'd had his last dose at the very end of Jan, so I guess we'd be about a 3 weeks overdue. I'd totally forgotten to do it, probably with all the other hassle. Poor thing. DH is taking him to the vet tomorrow morning for some anti fungal stuff.

And I'll be washing EVERYTHING like a woman possessed all weekend

MissBetseyTrotwood · 22/03/2013 20:51

It's had a proper clean up by our vet nurse and it's a huge ulcer about the size of a 20p piece. It's horrible, my poor dog. Vet's prescribed a sort of deep cleaning fluid (I think? DH just left the instructions before he went to work) that we have to put on, leave, then wash off and an anti fungal. He also said that the other things it could be are very serious and nasty and that we wouldn't go down that road until we'd eliminated the fungal infection option.

He doesn't seem bothered by it in the least though. I hope he didn't pick it up at the hospital or on one of our numerous return trips to the vet. Sad Told the DSs not to fuss him in case it is the dreaded ringworm.

BehindLockNumberNine · 22/03/2013 23:05

Oh Betsey, Billy is really going through the wringer isn't he?? Sad

When Sam was poorly and had been in hospital he developed a deep ulcer roughly the diameter of a 20 pence piece. It was treated with the same liquid you are describing but the vet nurses did it as he was still on drips etc at the time.
It healed well.

Sending healing vibes to the gorgeous Billy and Sam sends a tentative lick xx

MissBetseyTrotwood · 23/03/2013 07:43

How's Sam doing Lock - is he enjoying the snow?

It's too much of a coincidence that this thing's come up a fortnight after he's been through all that horrible stuff. Our vet (lovely) did say it could be connected to the attack in some way and, also that obv greyhounds are prone to skin problems.

We've had the heating on all night as he isn't wearing his coat at the mo and the fire's going on later today so his Lordship's prime spot will be reserved. Grin

BehindLockNumberNine · 23/03/2013 08:29

Oooh, sounds cosy in your house, may just have to come on over and claim my own spot by the fire Smile

Sam is fantastic at the moment. He has not needed steroids now since August. We have him on a fantastic ready made raw food called Natural Instinct. It seems to really suit him. He has put on weight and developed a lovely velvety thick coat.

He is also full of bounce and mischief Grin

He loves the snow, has already been out in the garden and dashed about like a spring lamb!!
I am less enamoured with the snow, Ems is supposed to have a horse riding lesson this morning and then later this afternoon she should be going on a Llama trek for a school friend's birthday party. I fear both may be cancelled if this snow does not stop pdq!

Enjoy the snow with your lovely boys and give Billy a hug x

MissBetseyTrotwood · 23/03/2013 19:03

I hope the llama trek went ahead - those beasts live in the Andes! They're well tough. Our guinea pigs (another Latino favourite) are fine. Their hutch box is stuffed with straw and when I shoved my hand in earlier to check them both it was positively toasty in their little nest!

Sam sounds on top form. Great you found a food to suit - now the DSs are a bit older I think we might go raw too. My friend's two rescue staffies are on raw and look amazing on it. Since she started it the bitch has had loads less skin problems too so it might be good in the long run for old Billy. He's had such a crappy time of it recently. I do hope things will be on the up for him soon.

BehindLockNumberNine · 23/03/2013 20:32

Llama trek was cancelled. Not on behalf of the Llamas but for the girls and the fact that the trek takes place in a hilly, forresty part of South Surrey; the trek was not visible under the snow and slippery to booth and they were worried about the girls (and llamas) disappearing over the edge of a hill and / or losing their footing.
Fair enough. Now rescheduled for 21st April when it should be hopefully milder, dryer and brighter Smile

BehindLockNumberNine · 23/03/2013 20:33

booth? boot!

MissBetseyTrotwood · 23/03/2013 22:15

How disappointing for her - fingers crossed for the 21st! It would have been mighty uncomfortable up there today. Perhaps she'll have some spring sunshine for round 2!
