Please share your worming tablet secrets

Cannot get pup to actually swallow a worming tablet. Last night I did everything, even wrapped it in smoked salmon and she wouldn't touch it. In the end I tried the 'throw it in and close their mouth trick' as I was advised by someone who knows about these things that this is fail safe. But no. She just stored the tablet in the side of her mouth until I was lulled into thinking she'd swallowed it (she made swallowing sounds and everything) then spat it out and grinned at me. Three times. Then I gave up and went to bed. This morning the tablet was mushed up into some Philly cheese and got it in that way, slowly.

There must be an easier way! Bear in mind this dog is a fussy eater so hiding it in food bowl will backfire as she often refuses a meal. If I could disguise it as a drinks mat or a skirting board mind I'd have no problems as she's eaten both of those today

We push ours into a piece of cheese (may need to leave it to warm up to room temp if in fridge so its soft enough to push a tablet into)

I hide in: cheese, slightly hollowed then reassambled cooked sausage, ball of pâté, ball of crab paste, cheese spread

my dog eats pretty much anything though

Peanut butter does the trick here.

I break up the tablet and mix the pieces into a small amount of wet food with a few pieces of normal kibble so he doesnt notice the difference in texture. He never normally gets wet food so wolfs it down

I crush them then mix them with a little softened butter.

Peanut butter might work but I'd have to crush it first I think and mix it in well. We tried the chunk of cheese last time but she ate the cheese and spat out the tablet!

Do they not do liquid on the back of the neck for dogs? Only way i can do my cat

Sorry that's for flea treatment, although i think you can get oral liquid wormers

I use a slice of German salami. Our dog can't resist it. Tear the slice in half, nestle the pill in one half and fold it over a couple of times - the meat is quite fatty so the pill stays put and doesn't drop out. Then I make him sit, show him the half with the pill, but also dangle the other half in the other hand. That way he knows he's having another bit. Works every time.

You can SizzleSazz and I do worm my pup with advocate which is a spot on flea/wormer but he also needs a tablet to cover tapeworms.

As a vet adopt the toss it straight down approach. You need to hold it in your fingers and place as far back on the tongue as you possibly can. Close the mouth quickly hold close and run the throat.
Obviously this does not work with dogs who want to eat me, then mixing it in cat food is a fail safe method.

Piece with no pill. Piece with pill. Quick as a flash another pill free bit.

You just have to push it right down the back of their throat. Only takes a second and they can't help but swallow it.

Follow up with a nice treat to take their mind off it.

Ham works for the fussy dog mostly but she will eat the ham and spit out the tablet. I have squidged the crumbs into a dairylea before now too.

Other dog is a pig and just eats it out of your hand quite happily.

1. Make marmite toast
2. Eat marmite toast standing at worktop accidentally dropping plenty of bits on the floor for dog to eat
3. Break worming tablet into quarters
4. Fully coat each quarter with marmite
5. accidentally drop marmite-y quarters on the floor one at a time whilst saying 'oh bother, I've just dropped some more toast'
6. Make unconvincing attempt to tell dog off for scoffing food off floor just to keep face

I have tried everything with SpicyDog but she is too clever and always spits it out.

I've had to switch to more palatable granules that I mix well into a NatureDiet tray. Panacur I think.

I hide them in cocktail sausages, they don't touch the sides. :)

Wrap in small piece of fried bacon.

Cream cheese works for us - the trick, as Wolfiefan says, is to make the first one pill-free, hide the pill in the second, then follow up with a second dollop of cheese/treat, so they have to swallow what's in their mouths along with it.

I always worry that they might not get the full dose if I crush the pill up, esp if they don't eat all the food it's mushed into, then I've got no idea how much they've had either.

I cut a thin slice of cheddar - wrap it round tablet and squidge together at the edges. Never fails - but then I do have a lab!

If she managed to store it in the side of her mouth when you threw it in, you didn't put it in far enough.

You don't want to put it in her mouth, you're trying to literally put it down her throat, then shut her mouth and she'll have to swallow it.

Phillidephia is the only thing that works on this house

Pate, everytime. He just licks the pate off my fingers with the pill under it - it doesnt touch the sides

Love the marmite toast suggestion! I thought I was doing the 'throw it in' as far back as possible but I may enlist DH's help next time and aim even further back. I swear she managed to turn her tongue backwards and drag it out
