Dog Toilet Training, help!

Basil and Pepper are doing well. Walk on the lead well, come to names (each others as well) and will sit (difficult as they are like a pair of yo-yo's). Waiting for training classes to start in the new year. But the toilet training is not progressing. I use the puppy pads because they were unable to go outside for first 3 weeks (next door decided to renew fence and garden not secure). They go outside now (dog door) and also still use the couple of pads but - they also go on the carpets as well. They don't appear to see the difference. Spent morning cleaning corner of dining room carpet only for Pepper to wait untlil i finished then go and squat. Regretfully shouted at him. Anything i can do?

How old are they now? It's just that I remember you posting on the same puppy thread as me so presuming they are not tiny any more?

If they are over the first week or so with you I personally would ditch the pads altogether. I threw the pads away at 10 weeks and all accident were over with by 12 weeks.

I took him out hourly at first and wandered round the garden with him so I could praise him even though it wasn't always appealing at midnight in freezing rain. It paid off though as now at 5 months he is utterly reliable and I can leave him to 'ask' to go out.

You def need to get rid of pads at it just encourages them to think they can go indoors. Don't rely on them going out of a dog door as they obviously just don't get it yet. You need to go back to basics taking them out every hour and after meals and introduce a command word so they then get to know what they're supposed to be doing. I use "go quickly" with my dog. Also don't make a fuss about indoor accidents and just clean up and move on or it will make it worse. FWIW I do think its a lot harder when you're trying to train multiple puppies !

They are 4 months. I do take them out as much as poss and have a 'word' for wees which they seem to know. Difficult to see what they're doing with the dark days but they run back to me for their 'reward' (may be some cheating here). I had removed the pad from the dining room, now only in utility and conservatory. I just get multiple small wees. They do use the dog door overnight. Just keep trying i suppose.

I had a torch next to back door and ran round the garden after him in the dark. Though I fully accept that is easier with one puppy!
