Advised not to use newspaper or pads to toilet training, will new puppy just get it?

I know it's early days but when we picked our new puppy up yesterday we were told not to use newspaper or pads.
We have had one week outside up to now which is great is it just a case of keep taking him out regularly and he will get it?

I prefer not use paper or pads, because I think you end up training them twice once to go on the paper and pads and then to go outside.
I always take pup out immediately after it eats and after it wakes and stay with the pup. I also take pup out every hour through the day in the first week. The moment pup performs I praise wildly using my word. After a week I add in lets go out and do a 'my word' before we go out and then stay tilll pup performs again praising wildly and using word.
I also use a crate so that when I can't concentrate on pup to watch for wee coming signals it knows it is in it's clean place. When pup is out I am looking for circling, pacing and going to corners of room if pup shows any of these behaviours I whizz it out to the garden.

Take puppy out every half an hour, as soon as they wake from a nap, after play/excitement/food. Use a code word like "do your stuff" or whatever you feel comfortable saying when the neighbours may be listening. If they perform, lots of praise. Get a large umberella, and possibly a dog coat for rainy days, my pup hated rain and would piss on the carpet rather than go outside unless she had a dog coat on!

Yes I've never understood the logic of training a dog to go on newspaper. Surely, you run the risk of them squatting on any random newspaper or magazine lying around the house for years to come.

Remember that the surface you train on (grass, woodchips, soil) will pretty much be a trigger for the rest of their lives. Likewise the command you use will need to be something you are happy saying a lot. (Ours is 'busy busy')

You will be spending a lot of time in the garden waiting for the magic moment to command/reward so I'd advise investing in an umbrella!

Good advice slambang - wish we had not got ours to go on grass - we are retraining him to go in the woodchip corner now if we let him out for a quick one in the garden.... he has made a right old mess of the "lawn" over the past 8 months - now a patch with tufts of grass surrounded by mud!

Slambam - we had a rescue dog who must have been trained to go on paper. The first week we had him I made the mistake of leaving a set of 30 reports (handwritten by me, in the pre-computer era) on the floor and he wee-ed all over them!
