Dog hairs everywhere!

After much persuasion my DC and DH finally persuaded my to agree to getting a dog. Lots of promises by them all (obviously all broken) about helping keep the house clean and looking after the dog.

The dog is gorgeous but I don't know how everyone else deals with dogs hairs. I vacuum daily and the dog is only allowed in certain rooms but they still get everywhere. They promised they would groom him regularly which lasted all of 6 weeks and he moults constantly.

I know I am being unreasonable but seeing dog hairs everywhere makes me cringe. I can cope with muddy floors but dog hairs on work surfaces! Aaaarrrgggghhhhh!!! Please tell me what you do to manage.

Could you take the dog for a haircut it does help quite a lot ,and also makes them easier to dry after walks etc. We have a terrier x and I keep his hair really short.

Borrow someone's Akita during a moult. You'll hardly notice your dogs hairs after that

Dogs shed. I thought everyone knew that?

A furminator comb might help, as would regular grooming but you're going to need to get used to some amount of hair, you really should have thought about this before you agreed to a dog.

I manage because I have never lived in a house without a dog. I don't understand how dog-less people cope

Thanks Floral. The dog is a short haired cross breed. When my DH and DC chose the dog I was assured (led to) that the dog would not moult much. He moults so much and they get everywhere. I know they must stick to clothing and travel around the house. I don't want to be constantly moaning but it's really getting me down.

You could have my Doodle.
Great big clumps of fur everywhere. A meal is not complete without a Doodle hair in it.

Mines fairly short haired ,with a beard and bushy eyebrows. It may be worth taking him to a good salon and seeing what they can do with him . I'd actually let mine grow his hair for a bit and he had it clipped a couple of weeks ago and looks like a different dog .

Sadly it is one of the main reasons people re home their dogs

There is no such as a cross breed that is guaranteed not to moult.

I just wipe the counter with a dry microfiber cloth and then wipe over some anti bac before cooking. A bit of dog hair has never killed anyone.

Invest in hoover specifically for pet owners.

Have you tried a zoom groom? Quick going over a short haired dog every day or two really reduces moulting. Also, did you rehome an adult or is it a pup? If the first, our Staffie moulted terribly for a couple of months then it reduced a lot. I don't ever find it on work surfaces.

Change your floor coverings to the same colour as your dogs hair! My house is golden lab coloured right through and you hardly see them at all. I do vacuum regularly but but helps not being able to see the hair all the time.

There will always be some hair. Grooming daily and a top notch vacuum cleaner will help enormously, but you can't totally eliminate it. As I type, my keyboard is a bit hairy. I yawned last night and inhaled a hair. Like DOoin, I wipe over all surfaces before preparing food and do my best to keep it all to a minimum. The central heating tends to mean that my dog sheds a little bit pretty much constantly. I keep a sticky roller thingy on the hall table so that I can dehair myself/DH/the DC before we go anywhere. I put up with these little annoyances because...well, the little sod is worth it.

Thank you everyone. I have just ordered the Zoomgroom from Amazon. Hoping it helps. I adore the dog it's just the hairs getting me down. I knew all dogs shed but didn't quite realise how much our one would. I use a dyson daily and also use a standup rechargeable vacuum constantly (best thing I have ever bought). Am hoping the Zoomgroom reduces what I see in the house a little bit.

crazy8 - my friend has two dogs, a scruffy but lovely rescue and a stunning pedigree, she is the most houseproud person I know and her house is immaculate. She keeps the rescues coat short (pedigree has short hair anyway but does moult quite a lot), the uses the Zoomgroom or a cheapy grooming mitt that you can get for a couple of pounds twice a week or more if needed. She tries to groom outside, a really good rub down. As others have said, she restricts access upstairs anyway and has a vacuum that copes with dog hairs, which she uses daily. She also burns candles during winter when the dogs are at their muddiest and smelliest. The small dog is allowed on the sofas, which are leather so that would help too I guess the others just too big. Floors are wood or tiled if that's a long term possibility?

Oh and they wear old stuff most of the time unless going out.

My hubby has mild asthma, so I will need to keep on top of the hair as much as I can too when we get our puppy on Sunday but downstairs is dog friendly really as it's tiled/wood/leather anyway! Already got my Zoomgroom!

He's actually fine with dogs so long as he takes his inhalers when he is supposed to, which is a whole different conversation. If I nag, I get accused of sounding like my MIL Guess he's old enough to know what's good for him!

You'll find the zoom groom helps loads. Ours arrived last week & I'm really noticing there is less hair. The amount that comes off her when we brush her is shocking! Hairy Mutt!!!
I do use it in the utility room though as it does tend to get everywhere.

Apart from that there is a certain amount of acceptance required! Oh & tiled floors are a Godsend .
